great mahou daisakusen (dimahoo) running on my new supergun. unfortunately, I was an idiot and bought a neo-geo stick with a USB output... now I have to wait for my PSX > Neo-Geo converter before I can play armed police batrider or dimahoo.

A winner is you. I played a bit of Kingdom Grandprix this weekend, and that game is stupid amounts of fun. I need more Raizing in my life.

I love Radirgy's style. It screams Jet Set Radio: the shmup.

It looks like Jet Set Radio: The Shooting, it plays like MS Office: The Game. Rote and dull as fuck. Even Illmatic Envelope. The zanier they try to go, the more boring their stuff becomes. I almost prefer Chaos Field, because it's more of a thing I can wrap my head around.

Wow.

Yeah, those games are definitely an acquired taste. I'm usually open to most anything but they are hard to get excited about.

In its own way, though, Radirgy Noa Massive did get a very nice presentation on the 360.

If there is one 360 shmup I would import, it would be Radirgy Noa.

I own Deathsmiles and Akai Katana, and I've imported Ikaruga[DC] and Shikigami No Shiro: Nanayozuki Gensoukyoku. If you know what the latter is, I'm not sorry.

You mean the RPG/SLG where I can romance Tsukiko Johima, as played by Mamiko Noto, before she turned into a horrendous monstrosity in SnS III? I'll pay mad monies for that shit... Because I'm crazy...

Nice. Sad to see so much Gradius up there considering how its a series I tried, but cant stick with given its huge emphasis on no miss memorization, but I can see why its there. Really excited so many people here are a fan of Muchi Pork and all the runners up were so heavily vote tied that it was kind of crazy. Lots of agreed upon great games here even if there were a few standouts. Not really any games were "you're that guy" in most cases. Just tons of great games. Wish we had more players here to get more votes though. Maybe next year.

I'm surprised Axelay and Salamander did so well.

Saddened Touhou didn't.

By the way, that 'monstrosity' in Shiki III isn't her, it's a nightmare fabrication. All the bosses in Shiki games are spirits taking the forms of people familiar to the PCs.

Great! That means she's still adorable. I'll need to change my XBL avatar back. <3Tsukiko<3

it just sucks that a decent portion of their games were never ported... and I hate trying to mess with MAME to play 'em. kingdom grandprix is a bunch of fun though and I think I'll be busting my copy out today :)

Just got the Eschatos/Ginga Force Wonder Pack today. I thought I would post a few pics, the packaging is pretty nice, I expected them to just be stacked on a spindle like Lost Odyssey, but they actually used a 3 disc case. Nice thick manual too, not that I can read it.

GOG is giving away Tyrian2000 today and I picked it up for free. Thing is Dosbox isn't running it properly for me. I get all kinds of screwed up green graphics and distortion. Any ideas whats wrong?

PS- comes with a free digital soundtrack too <3

Nice, I've still to buy it. I'm gonna grab it for the different CD and Wonder Branding.

Tyrian 2000 has been always free on their website. I haven't beaten it though. :S

Browsing the xbox live indies for shmups and found a fun one for $1 (80msp)

Vampire Rage

iV2ynmw.jpg

Gameplay reminds me of Milestone stuff what with the sword option and all that. Tries to be dramatic, but its pretty decent stuff.

Odd things though
-stage 1 is pointless. Next to nothing to worry about. Enemies but nothing fires enough to scare you or offer challenge. Could have cut this stage.
-green shots apparently cant be destroyed with the sword...I guess because its the same color as the boss's laser? I dont know but if it says sword destroys shots its kind of irritating to find out it doesn't always stay true to this
-odd hitbox.

After stage 1 it becomes a shmup of decent quality. Nice patterns to dodge though some appear a bit fast so if something flies by quick just sword on reflex. It takes itself to serious with the vampire thing and yelling avenge and vengeance and all that after some sword kills, but at least it sticks to its guns.

Anyhow its decent. Have fun for a $1

Same here, installing now. I think im gonna give Eschatos a shot first and the Ginga. Totally forgot that Eschatos included Judgement Silversword and that other game...so thats like 4 games and a soundtrack for the price of 1.

EDIT: Wow Eschatos is challenging on Hard mode, more so in advanced, since you have to worry about power ups and arent geared up from the start.

Also yay for Xbox one and PS4 both being region free.

Not that I think it will receive a big shooter following, but I did want to point out for those that missed it that Microsoft's announcement of the removal of DRM features also included the removal of region locking.

A good move for consumers.

Their reversal of the DRM and used games was surprising.

Them removing region locking BLOWS MY MIND.

Mine as well. Gonna make like a lot easier. Hopefully now folks will be on the system to throw support at the MS-funded japanese titles. A worldwide market might also give MS a shot at getting shooter titles based on the (I'm guessing) goodwill they've built with the producers this gen. Hopefully system gets released in japan.

Gosh, it would have been fantastic if the 180 was backwards compatible so we good bring all our shooter titles over.

Thats what i'm still holding out hope for. The only system I have boxed up atm is my Wii...but I dont want to shuffle around my systems whenever I get around to getting an XB1 or PS4 or whatever.

On that note, Ginga Force question: You need to supply your weapons with energy via those blue cubes right? Does the shield supply you with power, or just block things? Also it doesnt seem like there are any bombs or power ups aside from maybe customizing via the shop?

Well, today was a fun day. I'm curious, did the original XBone policy call for region locks? I looked, but never saw anything regarding that. As a matter of fact, I assumed they couldn't have region locking since all the game licenses were tied to XBL accounts, and plenty of people already have a fake Japanese ones. Still, this adds a nice little bullet point for their new policy.

I gathered it was going to be region-locking via IP-blocking, which was my biggest fear. I was actually happy they were basically not releasing it in Japan so it would force shooter producers to PS4. Now the jury is out, I guess.

I'm actually just hoping shooter titles still even get produced for next gen.

I feel we were pretty fortunate we had so many this gen. Really did not expect the quantity (and quality!) of shooters that came out.

What's this about not releasing in Japan now? I know they haven't given a date, but this thing will be available in Japan eventually. Not even Microsoft is dumb enough to ignore Japan.

Talking shooters in general, Yotsubane and Crimzon Clover gave me a new found hope for the future of Japanese shooters and their makers.

Yeah, I'm sure it is coming but they've stated late 2014 or even early 2015.

By that time the ship will have sailed with Wii U out for two years and PS4 out for one.

The've essentially chosen not to release it in that region, as I see it...or at least not give it a chance.

I'm pretty certain I've summed it up as accurately as possible in This Post regarding what happened with the whole Sony Microsoft Nintendo thing.

I gotta say though that next gen being comletely region free (save nintendo) is a major coup for us shmuppers. Now if folks will actually keep releasing as steadily as this gen for next gen we will be set! I just hope I can predict which console they all go to as I'm honestly buying a Wii U for Smash and a PS4 for import Kamen Rider Musou games.

Sure, I don't think that MS thinks they can "win" Japan, it's just a big enough market for them that it would look bad if they didn't ship there.

Interesting question, since most of the Xbox fanbase there is crazy hardcore, will we see Japanese dudes importing US consoles to get their Halo fix? I find that notion quite ironic.

@shaowebb: What an eloquent analogy...

Gotta get the 180 for Crimson Dragon and D4 (and Killer Instinct!)

Personally, I want shooters to come to PS4. Seems like the most developer-friendly anyways. And since I collect arcade sticks it is the best chance of getting cool japanese sticks as well. Not expecting much from Hori for 180.

And, Japanese consoles are always better than American or European.

I dunno KI looks like the type of game I might want to try at a friends house after throwing a lead blanket over his Kinect.

So how bout them STGs guys?

Im just wondering if Cave will still be on X1 or not next gen. Think they'll switch to Sony? I hear its harder to code for X1 what with the 3 OS thing and all.

How about them? Let's make it interesting and let's play The-internet's-own-Michael-Pachter and try to predict some shit for fun and profit. I'll throw my next gen gauntelt down, CAVE is XBone exclusive this time around.

@cj_iwakura: Neir is the secret best STG of last gen!

I pray Alfa System can stop being a second party dev house and get back to making Shiki IV.

While I would stab dudes straight up for some Shikigami no Shiro IV, doing codemonkey work for Phantasy Star is a pretty sweet gig for an old school house like Alfa System. Props to those guys.

After being impressed with Gradius and epecially Life Force on the NES, I was so hoping for Gradius II to come to U.S. shores. It never happened.

So can we talk about the best recent shooting game besides CC arcade, aka "Surechigai Shooting", the mini-shooter that was released for the 3DS' Streetpass this week?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwtxowoUiYQ

It's basically like Otomedius except it doesn't suck.
Your Streetpass friends give you special attacks that you can use to get through the levels. Diagonal flame-throwers, horizontal laser beams, rapid fire shots, rear missile shots etc.

Enemies come in from all sides of the screen, but you get a nice warning graphic to let you know, reminiscent of Deathsmiles.

The enemies fire a decent amount of bullets and the hitbox is forgivably small.

Gameplay-wise, it's sort of like Nintendo compressed the best of post-90s shooters into a package that's super easy for beginners to get into. Finding all the random power-ups your Streetpass Miis give you is fun and since it's different every time, you have to improvise.

Each stage has a "Score Goal", which is reachable if you try hard. There's also a set of crystals throughout the stage to find, and a No-Miss medal you can unlock if you no-miss the stage.

You progress through the galaxy a stage at a time. Probably 3 per planet. I would estimate there's 12 stages in total.

Anyways my only complaint is that once you play once, you have to wait until the next time you Streetpass to play again (or use coins to hire squad members).

I'm really hooked on it.
Did this come out in US/EU yet?

Is that part of the system update? For sale?

I've not updated the system yet. That said, I don't get Streetpass rural MD. I walk all over my little city and usually throw my 3DS in my bag...one Street Pass in eight months ;-(

I'm also loving Chain Blaster which came out last week as well.

I want that StreetPass DLC so bad. :( Unfortunately the North American release of the Mii Plaza update is TBA.

Well looks like it is up in EU so should be coming here shortly.

In the meantime I downloaded and bought the shmup game. It is the same as Mii Quest just with longer shooting levels.

Which is fantastic because I spent about 50 hours going through and unlocking everything in Mii Quest. And this looks similar!

Since I don't get any Steetpasses I just set up a few of mu extra 3DS systems with characters and streetpass with myself. Also grab the 10 coins each day for walking with the system for an extra character. That is what I did with Mii Quest.

A shmup whose powerups are dependent on Street passes? May as well make it Japan exclusive then.

There are NO streetpasses outside of going to a game or anime convention for the 3ds in America. I still haven't landed any.

You can still use your walking coins and play a little bit each day and advance. Also, they are going to be opening async hotspots at starbucks and mcdonalds later this year which should help a bit. I know I walk by both businesses one or twice a week.

I thought they were doing something with a firmware update to allow for easier streetpassing via WiFi access points? Though IDK how that could work.

I'm fortunate as there's a group of us at work that bring them in daily. I also try to bring my 3DS with me while I run around doing errands on the weekends though and its not uncommon to get one or two. I have found that libraries seem a good place to get hits, as well as transportation hubs (light rail, subway, buses, etc.).
