Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Yeah i'll probably roll the same in Mamorukun. Honestly I dont think I like the feel of twin stick shooting at all, even when its default controls. Something about holding an analog stick makes me feel like i'm not actually shooting...if that makes sense.

Im not seeing why people were saying Mamoru was bad. Curse shot takes some getting used to, and it seems like the best remixes are stuck in the Netherworld adventures challenge mode, but it still seems pretty fun.

Wish Story mode scenes advanced on their own.

That little GBC DX one looks cool as shit! Gonna have to track that one down.

Man, really regret not getting the Master System on VC before it got yanked :-(

Deathsmiles and Mushi Futari Bug Panic now available on Android. Yay for Cave being still "alive"!

Oh thanks! I didn't know about that. Too bad its from G-Gee again, but I'll probably end up buying both.

Deathsmiles is $12 though? I'm pretty sure I only paid like $5 each for DDP and Espgaluda II. That may have been a limited time thing though.

A huge amount of new content was made for the Deathsmiles smartphone mode, so the higher price tag makes sense there.

It's probably old news, but I just noticed it's possible to purchase

R-Type Dimensions

once again, 1200 points. Went on a shmup shopping spree to get close to having every worthwhile shmups on 360 (I was missing Ikaruga, RS, Guwange, Sine Mora and R-Type D among others) and I was pleasantly surprised I could get in Dimensions this time since I did try a while ago with no avail, yay.

Again, most definitely old news but who knows, posting it could prove useful to some fellow gaffer

Should've dropped Sine Mora in favor of anything else really. Or nothing at all

Got my Ketsui LE today.
I've just got one problem: How do I play with 2 players? It says "Insert Coin", so do I have to unlock more credits first?

Edit: Seems you unlock them pretty fast, at least.

I was messing around with G-Style's Chain Blaster (3DS) last night. I like it. At first it seemed dull since all I did was shoot the pea shooter at the intersection of the enemy waves. Then I realized I was doing it wrong, and started shooting the bomb into the intersections, and raking in the power ups, keeping the blast chain going. Now I get it. But what's the point of the pea shooter then?

I swear, if my copy of Ketsui gets damaged Canada Post....

I feel your pain. I'm in NYC and UPS shipped my Ketsui out of the city last night, and now they're giving me a "processing error" on the tracking page. How hard is it to move a box from Queens to Brooklyn these days?

Pea-shooter is just there for the beginning and those who want an easier time. If for some reason you mismanage your bombs (since they slowly replenish with bubbles), your only way is to use the pea shooter to grab more bubbles quicker. It also gets some bubbles to release on the many sub-bosses.

That said, Sagitarius is really the beginning ship. Since the game is all about perfect placement of bomb to keep the chain going then Orion is the ship to use. Orion does not even have a pea-shooter...instead your ship is the moveable/detonatable bomb itself. You mess up on bomb on Orion then the only way is to wait it out till your meter recharges to level 1.

That sounds fun. I'm assuming the Orion ship is what gets unlocked after I hit the 500,000 mark on that meter.

I'll try to play for score later. Is there a good guide somewhere that explains the scoring mechanics?
For the standard arcade mode at least (no clue about X mode), the basic thing is shot to trigger a number block and counter, then laser to keep it going. The value of the number (1-5) depends on distance from the enemy, so to start a chain you want to hit them up close, then laser away until the counter runs out. So in the beginning for example you might pop off one of the tanks or helicopters up close with a quick shot to get the 5 going, then laser through the rest in the area (although iirc you might need to start another chain to get them all with 5s).

Another thing to keep in mind is that the auto shot length is shorter than the regular shot, so if you want a short shot burst use that. It's useful on the little tanks since the short burst can pop off the turret without destroying the whole tank and starting a chain. Otherwise realistically I basically just use that as my shot button while using the shot button solely for lasering most of the time.

Thanks that helped a lot. I didn't realize you can keep the chain going with the laser.
I immediately improved my chain counter at the end of the first stage from about 400 to over 800 and my record from 4 million to 12 million after I read your post. :)

Oh hey, another Winnipegger!

I'm living in Vancouver now so I'm hoping stuff gets here faster, since this is where things from Japan land anyway. I ordered late so it only left Japan recently.

I actually live in Vancouver but I'm here temporally. lol

Can anyone point me to a guide/video covering the fundamentals of Ketsui? I wanna know how to get 5s out of the enemies instead of 3s all the time.

My big bundle of gaming goodness arrived:

Ketsui, Shooting Love, and DoDonPachi!

Now if I can just squeeze in some time to actually play them... :-/

Damn - that's a GOOD day.

Still havent grabbed the first 2 on your list. Would like to hear more impressions on Shooting Love before I pull the trigger.

Easy, get closer to them when you kill them. Like I said above it's proximity based, so if you're getting 3s you're just too far off basically. You can experiment on the opening tanks to see what kind of distances I'm talking about, but really the easiest thing is to just get the mentality of having to point blank kill when possible (although realistically the window is a bit bigger than that...but not that much bigger).

And since the laser continues a chain you can do some strategies to make things easier, like leave a popcorn enemy alone to come down low on the screen to start a 5 chain easily before mowing down harder enemies higher up.

I am an idiot.

I put took my group of games out of the box they were shipped in (but left them in bubble wrap) and put them into my bookbag for easier transport and when I got home, I saw I had crushed the edge of my DoDonPachi: SaiDaiouJou Kan Limited Edition a bit. :(

It's not horrible, but I still can't believe I did that.

I hate it when that happens. I'm never home, so I have all my packages sent to my workplace, and am constantly facing the prospect of mangling something while carrying it back to my home. It hasn't happened lately, but I definitely roughed up some jewel cases and DVD cases on more than a few occasions.

I've heard success stories of people ironing their cardboard cases to restore them. Obviously place a cloth between the iron and the box and attempt at your own risk.

Not sure anyone on here is familiar with Locomalito, but he released a Choplifter/Fantasy Zone inspired shooter called Gaurodan for free - on PC and Ouya. Really awesome game, I'd suggest trying it out.

Here's a glowing review of it if you're interesed. I discovered it on the Ouya the other day and was blown away. Really awesome stuff. Looks like he made a Gradius inspired game called Hydorah but I don't have a PC to play it.

Spent the last couple of days and 170 of my accrued Play Coins going through a beating a first pass on Mii Force. I also street-pass with my other 3DS to get one free flamethrower character each morning.

LOTS to like here for $5. Fifteen levels with some very challenging goals in the later levels. I'm definitely going to have to do multiple passes in order to 100% the entire thing. I've 100-percented a couple of the earlier levels.

Level design is very inspired with tons of well-executed perspective changes...often times in-level. Fantastic show by Good Feel. Also, a very good unlockable at the end that makes it worth playing all the way through.

I loved the first two Mii Quests and spent about 50 hours playing those over the last two years and I can see myself keeping playing this one daily for the next few months.

Altogether: great little surprise shmup in a year with a shit-ton of shmup releases/rereleases.
