Show us your RETRO Gaming Setup

Here's my CRT with a SNES hooked up (in the green drawer). Also pictured: Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS2 games, along with my Saturn Twin Stick and Sakura Taisen mouse/mousepad (boxed).

To the right of the CRT are my PSOne, PS3, PS4, Genesis (and import MegaDrive) and Dreamcast games.

Even further right is my Nintendo shrine. These shelves hold all of the games that released on Nintendo systems, from NES/Famicom to Wii U (and handhelds), from top to bottom.

Continuing right, there's my modern TV (sitting on an old Japanese dresser that survived firebombings in Kobe in WWII) along with my PS4 and Wii U consoles (under dust covers). To the bottom left is my fat, white (Japanese) PS3 sitting vertically (also under dust cover). Also pictured are my PSP and Vita games to the left.

A word about my cartridge based retro games. Almost all of them have been placed inside plastic cases, with high quality reproduction cover art printed and inserted into the cases' outer sleeves. Here's a look at some of my N64 games:

And NES:

The cases were ordered in bulk from a supplier that would send cases to video and game rental places. They hold the game, manual and usually any maps or inserts as well. Here's a look inside Zelda: AlttP:

Here's my jumble of retro controllers. All but one of them are first party (not sure where I got that 3rd party PS2 one...):

Finally, unpictured are my 180 or so Saturn games (all Japanese region) and consoles, which I have pretty much every single one for any games I own. I used to have the systems all hooked up at once, but changed the setup since my son was born and needed to better conserve space. Here's how it used to look:

Damn this is nice. I still have a P90 with a Voodoo 1 in storage, I should play with that one sometime.

You should! I didn't have a Voodoo 1 back in the day but picking one up and hearing that click for the first time a few years back was pretty wild.

Nice! I always preferred the Voodoo line of cards, my fist 3D card was a Voodoo Banshee and loved it. I always wanted to box frame a Voodoo 5500 card and hang it on the wall because of how ridiculously huge it is.

Yeah that's a beast lol. I'm not sure if my case would actually fit it.

Genuine question.I don't game on pcs these days. Why would you keep around old hardware? Aren't most games playable on modern gear?

Just about anything from the DOS era is playable in Dosbox but a lot of games released for Windows 95/98/ME have issues running on newer systems. GOG has helped alleviate that somewhat but it's still an issue.

Part of it is just messing around with old hardware and software. I cut my teeth on 98SE and am very nostalgic/fond of it.

But what if you install Windows 98 on a small nettop like the Asus stuff? Wouldn't it work the same? I'm interested in bypassing DOSBox but I don't really want another massive computer at home.

It might be possible but it generally doesn't play nice with modern hardware. Having more than 512mb of ram alone can cause problems and chipset drivers won't support anything pre XP.

Bumping this for a question.

For those with CRTs, what do you for audio?

Are there any speaker solutions for them that doesn't required a receiver and 5.1 like a conventional setup.

I just need a better sound solution. Old CRT speakers really suck.

You can make some pretty awesome 2.0 stereo systems with a decent receiver+bookshelf speakers. That's what I do. I use two of these and they sound absolutely fantastic:

http://www.infinityspeakers.com/boo...speakers&dwvar_PRIMUS 163_color=Black#start=1

I chose those because they're super clean sounding and you can get away with not having a subwoofer if you want to watch movies/listen to music with them and still have nice bass.

Likewise, I also use a receiver with some beefy tower speakers. Pure bliss.

Even if you don't go over the top like me, maybe a good soundbar would help your sound setup? That could be a good solution if you're on a budget, and they do a pretty good job.

Both my professional CRT's don't have speakers anyways, so I had no choice. ;-)

Reposted from a different topic, but why not :p

Below is a small cubby in the area that also has a couple fold out chairs stashed to the side. This little area exist only to use any light gun games I have access to because well, they don't work on modern televisions.

Right to the side of that is a bedroom of sorts where I put the setup where all pre HD consoles would go, and the majority of my Nintendo or prior era stuff.

Then the remainder of the area is basically a mixture of a hallway that leads into the den like area. All the Skylanders/Disney infinity stuff belongs to my fiancee, the actual boxes she usually tosses but we kept them there for shelf filler for now.

I use an old pioneer av receiver and speaker set that's also connected to my turntable. I'm in analog heaven over here.

How do you connect your retro consoles on a Sony PVM and what is so special about these monitors compared to a regular CRT TV ?

Which Sony PVM is the best or any other brand you can recommend me?

I think I've told you this already, but it deserves repeating.

That looks like such a sweet setup, goldenpp72. Great work.

It's a work in progress still, but here's mine. 32" JVC CRT with all of the consoles running through AV. No RF whatsoever. It was a bit of a pain cracking open the Intellivision and the 2600 to solder in the AV mod, but it was well worth it. Tossed down a couple of bean bags and it's my "retro corner"

LoRa6Uh.jpg

Still need to find some storage for the games and controllers, though.

I always dreamed of having my very own man cave to celebrate gaming. These are a couple of snapshots I took a while ago. I hope you guys like it.

Alright so here's my AWESOME hybrid setup in my living room:
WV7QMbG.jpg

Now you are probably wondering "what's so awesome about this?" Well here is the deal: both screens (the HDTV and the PVM) are placed perpendicularly to each other, each with a couch in front of them. To play one or the other, you just go to the appropriate couch. OH MY GOD THAT'S LIKE TWO LIVING ROOMS WITHIN A SINGLE SPACE, HOW CLEVER

Let's look at each section separately:

The "retro" side
fVEcyZs.jpg

Top row: SNES (on subwoofer), Genesis 2 with Sega CD 2, Sony PVM 20M2U, consolized Neo Geo MVS by jamma-nation-x.com
Bottom row: "Super 8" NES clone, RGB+region modded PCE Duo-R by doujindance, Sega Saturn, Bandridge manual 5 port SCART switch

The "mostly but not entirely modern" side
QshqnYt.jpg

Top row: Mac Mini 2010 (used as HTPC and for audio rerouting, more on that below), PS2
Middle row: Xbox 360, AV amp (with PSTV on top of it), PS3 (also have a PS4 in my bedroom that I occasionally swap with it)
Bottom row: Wii U, collection of arcade sticks, Dreamcast

Getting proper audio
As I'm using the same AV amp and speakers for both setups, this posed an interesting challenge due to the stereo effect being initially wrong on the retro side. To fix this, I have routed all sound from that side to the line-in port of my Mac Mini, and then with this very handy app called "LineIn", I can forward it to the proper 5.1 channels (left -> front right, right -> back right) to get the proper stereo effect.

Switchable display
Both the Dreamcast and PS2 are located so that they can easily be switched between the HTDTV and the PVM, depending on what's best for each individual game. For the Dreamcast this is simply done by switching the VGA box between VGA (HDTV) and S-video (PVM), for the PS2 this requires a cable swap but it's set up to be as less hassle as possible.

This set up is great! Was thinking about something similar, Great to see!

My retro setup is a mess but I have the usual 8/16/32/64-bit consoles tucked away in a messy ikea metod shelf, no pics worth showing though :/

But here is my pride and joy right now :)

Yeah, dream is real.

Picked up a 20" BVM and a 14" PVM.

Now to retrofit my entertainment center...somehow...

pvms3.jpg

I'm in Helsinki, Finland. And i did pick up a few extra 20" PVM's. Will need to test that they work before selling them. Probably for about 80EUR a piece. Too lazy to ship them out of here though, sorry.

Retro and modern combined!

Plus I see the bad version of SotN in the OP with uneven pixel distribution. I bought that awful thing too.

Oh my lord.

Amazing.

Badass I love it.

Perfect chairs.

Posted this elsewhere on GAF at some point, but here is my setup. Had my DC in there too but I have to keep adjusting the laser and my S-Video cable just went out so I have to get a new one. I also have a 14 inch Sony PVM which gives a far superior picture than this JVC but it's just too small for my tastes. Waiting to find a 20 inch locally to fully replace it.

Peep the laserdisc player on top...

Figured I'd post a pic, after removing most of my gear, in preparation for a different setup..

I plan to build a 2-row entertainment shelf, during X-Mas break, that's deep enough for my CRT, 8 consoles and my 90's era Sony speaker system.

I like the vinyl wrap on the Dreamcast stick.

I'll have to do that to the Namco PS arcade stick I've got, the paint has worn a bit and it looks shitty.
