Showerheads and Caddies

My apartment came with a really basic showerhead that worked ok for the last couple years. It must be getting clogged in some holes and increasing the pressure in other holes, because lately sometimes a strong stream will catch me in the nuts. It's also not very maneuverable so I can't really wash the walls with any accuracy.

I know I could clean it out with vinegar, but I want to upgrade and this is a good excuse. I love big rain showerheads, but it would also be nice to have a hand-held so I can wash the tub down. I grew up with a hand-held massage type, and never really used the massage feature, so I don't need that.

I think I've narrowed it down to this one:

Peerless 76950 2-in-1 Shower System

Based on a video review, looks like you can use just the horseshoe portion, just the hose, or both. Other reviews say it has leaking problems but if you change the plastic washers for rubber ones and tighten certain areas the leaking goes away. It's in my price range and I'm pretty set on buying it.

But now I will need a new shower caddy. My current one is a cheap plastic thing that hangs off the showerhead. It's not very stable and stuff falls off all the time, or a bottle will get in the way of the shower. I know the hose on the Peerless would knock into it all the time.

I'm thinking of getting a corner caddy. I don't have good luck with suction cups in general. I have some suction cup hooks in the shower for my sponge and wash cloth, but they're constantly coming un-suctioned.

But I'm also concerned about the tension rod style of corner caddy. Will the ceiling area around the rod get moldy faster? So far I don't have mold growing on my ceiling and I'm trying to keep it that way. I rinse down my tiles and shower curtain with bleach maybe once every other week, but some mold is always there.

Any suggestions on another caddy? Anything else I should consider? I'd like to spend around $20 for the caddy. Seems like the good ones are really expensive. Anyone have a teak or bamboo caddy?

Also curious to see what other showerheads and accessories people use.

I have one of those waterfall shower heads. It's nice and relaxing but I do miss being pummeled by a high-pressure water jet sometimes.

EDIT: As far as a caddy, mine hooks onto the shower head, resting against wall. It has two hooks for clothes\sponges and two shelves for soap and bodywash\shampoo.

last apt I lived in had a tension rod style caddy, can't remember if there was an issue with mold though.

edit: yesterday I bought a caddy for my new apt that's the hanging kind. i have experienced slippage with those kinds before but this one has a piece of textured rubber tubing around the neck that keeps it in place quite well. dunno if that'll work with your intended showerhead though.

I do that too. Only because my gf seems to think it's funny when she throws a glass of cold water at me while I shower.

ha, shit, my ex-gfs family had such an intense debate about this once.

i usually face it.

That might be more stable, I will look for something like that. Mine doesn't really slip off the showerhead, but it swings too much as I take bottles off and then things fall off. I also think it will occupy the same space as the hose. Actually I just want something nicer.

I usually start off facing the showerhead, but then spend more time facing away and letting the shower hit my back. It's also sort of a problem that I face both ways, because I sometimes leave my shampoo in the corner away from the shower and sometimes it's in the caddy on the showerhead, and I lose precious seconds turning around trying to find it.

My gf bought a metal caddy from Target that hangs on the shower curtain rod. I now believe this method is superior to all other methods.

No, I do that. Well, kinda. Mine hangs over my head, but I face away from the wall it's attached to, so I guess that counts.

I've had so much trouble with shower heads that contain any plastic parts that I'll only buy solid brass (or another metal) ones. They make them in the larger, rain type as well. They're much heavier, more durable and I haven't had a problem with leaks; I've had my current one for several years. Might be a bit harder to find one with a hose, but they really are worth it. (The one you listed may be an exception though according to the good reviews.)

As far as caddies there is a recessed area for shampoo etc. built into the tile of our shower, but before that I used the metal or rubberized (?) metal ones that hang from the shower head with no problems. The tension rod ones that go in the corner suck.

Ok, thanks, I'll take that off my list of possibilities.

I thought about the fact that it's plastic, but ya, the reviews make me think it'll be good. If it breaks, I guess I'll have to look at something more expensive.

Might check out that curtain rod hanging one, Axion. I wasn't sure if those would work well with curtains. How is the stability? It looks like it would swing, especially with big shampoo bottles on the top rack.

Isn't that how you're supposed to take a shower? Only time I face the shower head is when I'm washing my face.
