Simplest Grand Strategy game to get into the genre

I played Europa Universalis 3 for a bit some time ago, but didn't get very far before putting it down...maybe I'll pick up Crusader Kings 2 since it's being recommended so heavily in this thread.

Also, good to know about Hearts of Iron 3...I'll avoid that one for now.

Well, I'll be the massive dissenting voice here. I found CK2 to be an absolute nightmare to actually get into, and I came fresh off EU3 and Victoria I/II. Doesn't change the fact that it's a good game, but lord was it a trainwreck learning, and I still mostly feel like a fuck up whenever I play it.

My advice is to just start with whichever era is most attractive to you. I started with EU3, but V2 is my most played Paradox game by far, and IMO, the most straightforward one. Assuming you play a nation like France, it'd be very hard to run your country into the ground. You can experiment, and keep the gravy ship rolling either way.

I bought CK2 on a previous sale but stopped playing since I got distracted by other stuff. But I will definitely get back to it, just bought the expansion DLCs to catch up.

I've put about 20 hours into HoI3 and I still make "rookie" mistakes like having too many units in an area and getting a stacking penalty or sending my tanks into a mountain. :-/

I went into CK2 from EU3 and was able to learn and master the different systems quickly. If you want a good place to begin in CK2 I would recommend one of the Irish dukes. You can unify Ireland without outside interference and go on to conquer Scotland/England or wherever you choose.

If you really enjoy the organization of military corps and armies, then HoI3 might be for you. There is just so much more detail in the controlling of the military compared to CK2, Vicky2, or EU3 that I felt lost for quite a while.

For CK2 beginners, I would actually recommend Venice. Venice is pretty much easy mode. Easily one of the richest playable houses, with even Barons quickly able to rake in more income than say....the Kingdom of England. You can also easily amass a colossal military force that can crush places like....the Kingdom of England.

Of course playing as Venice requires the Republic DLC.
