BLACK MYTH: WUKONG Doesn't get enough credit for its genre defining animations. Truly best in class.

I love Souls and Souls-like games, but this never really felt like that to me,
Thats why I LOVE this game. It's not a real Souls-like game to me. It's more God of War meets Souls, key word... God of War. This game has the spectacle of GOW and the atmosphere/art of Souls. Perfect fusion.

but I guess I can see the similarities. I just wish I could get into the game, it's just not my cup of tea, I've seen all this praise and after seeing so much of it, I just don't see what they see and that's it, really. Are those animations nice? Sure. But to me it doesn't look like anything jaw dropping or absolutely eye catching. Just some solid animations.
Treat it more like GOW than you do Bloodborne. That may change your views on it.
Its shaping up to be my fav game this gen.

Theres a few that are just as hard as anything in Froms games, but overall probably not as hard. Its still fucking hard though.

But the fights are amazing.

I don't doubt they're impressive to watch, but I don't like physical multiple attempt barriers to progression in games. Or does it not work like that in Wukong? I tolerate the From bosses because they're a smaller part of the experience, odd as that sounds.

Yes and no. There is a lot of awesome secret/hidden shit in the game, all of the hardest bosses are secret bosses. You can progress the story without doing them, but youll be missing out on some cool stuff.

Best in class? Not a chance. I don't get the whole "gen defining" either. They're great no doubt, but it's all familiar if you've played enough Souls and Souls clones. I've seen animations that are for more impressive to me - RDR2, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario Odyssey, hell just this year I think something like Death Stranding 2's animations trumps it...the list goes on.

Are the "genre defining" animations in the room with us?

good animations cant save an overall mid game overrated to death. All its copy cats will suffer the same way Wuchang did, because you can only brainwash ppl once.

Spot on.

Wukong hit lightning in a bottle once and actually got way more credit than it deserved. Don't expect the next 12 rip-offs to do the same.

Why would anyone waste their time doing this? Everybody already knows what you're like, you're not going to care no matter what's posted.

impressive =/= genre defining; don't go moving goal posts now plsthx.
There isnt a single action game with better animations than Black Myth Wukong. I would say not even close actually.

I already know what you'll do. You're going to post some silly poorly animated stiff ass Souls game that animates like this

7521fc677d4422e2c17365ff5a18b71d.gif

and tell me it has better animations than Wukong

Dissing Sekiro animations is next-level retarded. I'm impressed. You can take my tag.
Im not dissing Sekiro animations. Im saying the animations in THAT video you posted, have absolutely nothing on the Wukong video in the OP. This should be obvious after 10 seconds of watching both videos

I'd argue downplaying Wukong animations is even more retarded. They are fucking elite.

You don't know shit because I'm not going to post anything lol, already learned my lesson in the past interacting with you, ain't nobody got time to waste energy "proving" anything to you; carry on with your current flavour of the month delusion on graphics.

That was just a random clip. You asked for a game. I provided.

So you see that. And you genuinely, without any bias, think it has more impressive animations than this?

Look how fluid Wukong moves. Compared to that Sekiero vid, where you can CLEARLY see stiffness and hesitation to move to the next animation in the video you provided. The animations dont blend together as smoothly as Wukong.

Come on man. I'm not talking about cool factor, or art style, or boss design here. im talking pure, technical animation analysis.

There is absolutely zero stiffness in any of the combat. Everything from the dodging, the hit reaction, the combos, the running, all blend together so seamlessly.

Sekeiro is good animation, especially for a FROM game. But Wukong is elite level animation. Theres a clear difference

Yes because Sekiro runs on an old ass engine, last-gen and has 10 times less than Wukong's budget, which was developed on a next-gen engine capable of doing a lot more.

Leaving See Ya GIF by MOODMAN

Wukong was made for only 40 million dollars, by a team literally making their FIRST AAA game. They started with 13 people.

People thought Wukong was vaporware.

Game Science went from being accused of being Chinese vaporware... To getting the closing announcement at the biggest game show on earth off one game.

This is their first fucking try at making a game.

Its an incredible achievement. Idk why yall try to downplay it so much.

I agree that for it being their first game, it's impressive.

However, I think people are against the people overrating it like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Thats how I feel about From games. Everyone loves them and I just dont understand it.

But even in this video, 2 minutes in... He praises the animations.

They are undeniable.

Because From Software Games are not only genre-defining but foundational to the genre of souls-likes itself.

The game was being pushed by chinese all over the internet, there's no need to beat around the bush, that's the "strangely overrated" part.

That being said people also downplay the game because it's chinese and in their head it's just a cheap dishonest copycat. Which given the state of the industry and other action games or so called A-RPG on the market is laughable to me anyway.

And the game is impressive, that's it. Not just for a first game. The whole roster of bosses is just unmatched. Again not talking about the overall game-design and gameplay, but the realisation and level of detail.

I guess I'm Chinese because I beat the game 3 times and loved every minutes of it 🤷‍♂️

Overrated? What the fuck is this nonsense? The 81 metacritic game, overrated.

I'll have whatever the fuck you're smoking

Yea man. Game is a work of art. Im still on my first playthrough but I've put like 125 hours into it. lmao.

Soaking up everything, slow walking, photomode, secret areas and bosses. fuck its good.

(To be fair, Yellow Long took me like 10 hours alone)

Mindseye? 🤣🤡

If it was made by FROM it wouldve won multiple GOTY awards and been called a masterpiece book it
I don't think so, honestly. I think Lies of P and Stellar Blade were overall better games than Wukong, but still not quite goty material. It has nothing to do with racism etc, but with polish, craftsmanship and balancing.

In Wukong you just feel that the overall polish and direction is missing. The devs just don't have that much needed experience in game design. The chinese will get there eventually, I'm sure of that, but they are not quite there yet. Wukong 2 could do the trick. We'll see.

Not just animations, but has some of the best face scanning too, that according to western game developers is "impossible" to do.

I really enjoyed this game but i find it overly glazed. The moveset wukong has access to is pretty lame. Its like the same combo over and over. And then the level design is kinda weak.. the amount of invisible walls especially early on are insanity. The game is carried by excellent boss fight and visuals. I give it an 8.5 personally. Boss fights really kick ass
I have a problem with this as well. A limited moveset works when you got a bountiful of weapons like in From games, but not in Wukong. You repeat the same 4-5 combos after 3-4 hours until the end of the game.

At least, it's spiced up with transformations and abilities, but the combat needs more sauce.

In what way are those games more polished or refined ?

In combat design Stellar Blade is as mid as Wukong but Wukong has the content, the variety, the setpieces, the bosses, the game just keep going (personally i would also say the universe of Wukong is far more interesting than the very dull SB) while Stellar Blade is filled with fillers and recycled content, the game is a snoozefest and just get better at the end.

100%

The animation work is just insane. That fight against the tiger or the bear during the fire was just ridiculous. Nothing from FROM comes close in terms of presentation.

The game was incredible and an amazing first game from a new developer.

Crazy underrated cause China

To be honest its a great looking game, and solid gameplay wise, but its world just felt very dead and boring to me.
Comparing it to the world of Eldern Ring, with all the stuff to discover and explore, this just doesnt come close.

From are still the kings of the genre.

Also TLOU2 is still the best animation in a game imo

One thing is for sure, for a devs first true AAA, they definitely delivered, when so many others have failed, even those with much lower expectations.

It's weird I love from but I felt pretty aimless in Elden Ring. They're the masters of the genre for sure but their take on open world left me kinda cold, it just never clicked in the same way the souls games did for me

Id rate the boss fight design in this game on par with (if not above) FromSoftware game. The game features over 80 unique, non-repeating bosses, more than any FS game. The true ending's final boss, Erlang, has 73 different movesets, not to mention dozens of dialogues and interactions that change depending on the player's actions and skills used. Some bosses can even counter the player if they spam a certain move too often.
If only the playable character had 73 unique movesets

This

It was stuck in between traditional hack and slash and Souls-likes.

In Souls-likes if you get bored of one weapon you have many others to try out.

In a hack and slash each weapon has alot more moves that take skill to learn.

Wukong has only one weapon with a modest moveset. It gets tired after not too long.

Wukong is somewhat saved by it's enemy and boss variety.
