Tonight at the Mallrats 10th anniversary screening and Q&A in LA, Kevin Smith did some casual Q&A before and after the movie (before the cast Q&A got underway for the DVD) and someone asked him how he liked Sin City.

He said he loved it and that he heard that parts 2 and 3 will be filmed back to back next February!

I haven't seen Sin City (live in Australia where it gets released in August), but I get the impression that the film would be a whole lot more class if it was just left as the one film.

Not really, because the graphic novel (which the film is a shot for shot reproduction of) is really just a set of seperate stories all set in Sin City. Miller and Rodriguez just picked 3 and went with those for the first film.

Dwight has two of the four remaining books to himself. The others are Hell and Back (which is LONG and, IMO, really really good) and Booze, Babes and Bullets (IIRC) which is a collection of short stories.

They could make both of Dwight's stories into on movie and Hell and Back into another. Then BB&B could be made into a direct to DVD movie or something. Or "bookends" like they were in Sin City 1.

My thoughts exactly.

Does EVERYTHING have to be a fucking trilogy these days?!

Unlike the matrix though, this is really just a collection of stories in the same city in the same style.

For people that enjoyed it, it's a very good thing.

OTOH, if that's what the Matrix sequels were, I think they'd have been a lot more celebrated.

Yeah, I think people forget that these are just a collection of stories. I mean, there are more stories to tell. And they're already done. And I don't think the best have all been used, yet!

The stories in the first movie were the best by a long shot. Still, an all Dwight movie would be pretty cool. The problem is that A Dame to Kill for is a pretty fucntional story, but Family Values is a rather short piece that is just a simple episode of Dwight and Miho killing people without a great deal of story.

First tragedy, then farce.
This isnt really a trilogy per se since its not one story arc (hell, the first movie didnt even have a real story arc per se)..

the problem with trilogies that are set up that way is the story arc usually gets fucked. Almost allways the first movie is very self contained because they dont know if they will get to make the sequals or not.. so they write the script to tie up most of the loose ends nicely even if they dont solve everything (see the Matrix, had the sequals never been made, you would just assume Neo was in control, or Star Wars.. the death star was blown up.. and while Vader got away, had their never been sequals you still would have had some resolution)...

the problem comes with the next two movies.. you left everyone on a happy note at the end of the first, so you have to create some massive problem to be solved in the third film. This usually leaves audiences PISSED because Han is frozen in carbonite. Star Wars did an awesome job in the second movie by diminishing what had been accomplished in the first movie and showing the empire still firmly in control.. the matrix fucked up by having Neo way too powerfull the entire time, and waited until the last 10 minutes of reloaded to set up the conflict to be solved in the last movie.

Oh well, Im ranting.. but Im really looking forward to these movies.

I like A Dame to Kill For better than The Big Fat Kill, and probably better than That Yellow Bastard. And as previously said, Hell and Back is pretty good too!

I think Family Values is a lot of fun, though.

Sin City is one of the few Miller books (series of books, whatever) that I haven't read, so the other stories might all suck, but I heard Gail is in some of them AND THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME

Yeah seeing how much of a success the Sin City film was...I wouldn't be surprised if Frank Miller decided to do some new material.

2 and 3???

Why not? They're incredibly quick to film and cheap to make. I mean, he's got actors on set for just days. Alba was on set for a grand total of four days.

Not only that, Rodriguez did test shots for other stories already.

This is good news. I like Sin City and if its all a direct translation of the printed books why not make a "sequel".

I just think if you make one good movie about something, you should just walk away and be happy with that success....

Because Sin City wasn't a movie about anything. It was a direct translation, word-for-word, panel-for-panel of Sin City stories. There are lots more. And if you liked those stories, why not others?

Okay, I'll clarify: if you make one movie about something, based on anything, or with a particular look or feel, one should be happy with the success and let it stand on its own instead of replicating it.
