Sin City

I noticed a few people walking out. I understand why sometimes someone likes a movie, and someone hates a movie, but people walking out of this is, at least in my eyes, like someone walking out of Shawshank Redemption, or The Sound of Music, or Schindler's List. It does not compute...but I saw at least 5 people do it at the theatre.

I dunno. Different wired brains I guess.

Even though there was little for me to gain from it having read the comics (I couldn't believe how identical it was) I enjoyed the movie. I always thought they should have done 'A Dame To kill For' rather than 'A Big fat kill' (Those are Dwights two stories for anyone who hasnt read the comics) and having seen the film i feel i was right, A. Because i thought it was a better story, and tied in better with the other two stories. And B. Because its a prequel to BFK and so it introduced Dwights character a lot better.

I think my two favourite scenes were both Josh Harnetts, unbelievable in a film full of actual talented actors, but he really did a great job. Mickey Rourkes scene in the bathroom with Lucille was also excellently delivered i thought.

The only real let down casting wise imo was Senator Roark, in the comics he's this big ugly intimidating guy, really looks like the boss of a hell hole like Sin City, Powers Boothe (Wow what a name!) just looks like an everyday sleezy politician.

Still i really enjoyed it, tbh i wish Miller had added to it, he made a film for the fans but over looked the fact that the fans had already seen everything he was putting on screen (and more). I'll have a tough choice if he makes another one whether or not to read the comics first.

Saw it last night. It's pretty wild.

Marv in the electric chair was simply too awesome for me. Seriously, "Is that the best you can do?" :lol

Didn't quite pack the 'punch' I was thinking it would have given the intensity of the trailers... but still very good. Not nearly as gory as I thought it would be. But then I think my expectations of gory at this point are extremely high.

How the hell can you even dare to compare Sin City to Shawshank Redemption and Schindler's List? THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS. I bet the Spiderman movies are comparable to The Godfather trilogy now?! :lol

I feel dirty just to be in this thread, and it's not from the filth of sin city!

I honestly feel that Sin City is one of my favorite movies of all time. I just love it. And can anyone help me with that theme that I was talking about?

Because I really really REALLY liked it? And sometimes when people make comparisons, they choose examples that might be a bit too extreme but hope no one will notice :lol

No, it isn't as good as those movies, but I loved it. It was the best movie I've seen since... Shawshank. Seriously, that's how much I loved it. Though the last time I had such a good time at a movie was Team America, but that's a different kind of good time.

Favorite line of the movie-

Policeman (searching for Marv): "There's no sign of him."

Marv: "Here's a sign!"

*plunges hatchet into cops crotch*

I sat thru most of it but man was it painful. Terrible acting- how these talented actors made it thru this dreck without laughing is beyond me. To me it was basically a violent movie towards women in thongs. With guns. This is a movie for 13 year olds. First movie I ever walked out on. I hope they never get funding for a sequel, but if they do maybe they should re-write some of the dialouge-what may work in comics does'nt always work in film

Your opinions and inability to type fill me with rage!

I don't understand the claims of misogyny against Sin City especially since no damn testicle was safe in the flick.

Strange that you say this... I would think younger or immature people are most likely going to be the ones who can't appreciate or understand the style of dialogue/delivery/narrative in this film. =P

I just saw this movie despite being on American soil for less than 24 hours. It was top priority. And I'm hear to tell you all that...

SIN CITY IS THE BALLS, BAY-BEE. PURE BRASS.

God bless you Frank Miller.

I don't understand why people would walk out, did they see the trailers? The movie was pretty much exactly what it said it would be.

nice 'tar Willco

I thought I saw her head too, but didnt Marv go back to visit Nancy after they got away from the Farm?

Uh, she's never been married. And that quote was taken way out of context. It came from her cosmo interview where she said that she was fine with having sex just to have sex.
Woops, I thought she got married to her Dark Angel co-star. I guess they never went through with it. My mistake!

Heh, so far, I think Dark Horse has outperformed Marvel and DC in having two of their top comics (Sin City and Hellboy) turned into frickin' awesome films. But since both of those are creator owned, I think it speaks volumes about Miller and Mignola, both of whom worked hard through the production process and paired up with two directors (Del Toro and Rodriguez) who I always thought had amazing potential, but never lived up to it -- until now.

Saw it again for the second time tonight. This time I could really appriciate the colouring of the 'black-and-white' film. The first time I was too into the movie. The best instance of colouring, which I didn't notice before was... I guess I'll spoiler tag it.

When the cop puts the flashlight into Dwight's face. His face lights up like it was normal colour. Somehow I was too into the movie to notice the first time around.

Just saw this tonight.

God damn, Jessica Alba is sooo perfect. She just knows how to be sexy. I can't understand why people are screaming about her not going nude- I think that it worked much better to have her in a skimpy outfit. It kind of added to the innocence of her character, and left something to the imagination. It was a nice contrast to all of the nude characters, and made Nancy so much sexier in my book.

It was just too funny to see Elijah Wood running around killing people and his blank, evil stare. I couldn't help but see Frodo. I loved the effect with the shaded glasses. Good stuff!

What's a good place to get the Sin City comics/graphic novels/whatever you wanna call them? I'm too into the movie right now.

any comic shop should have them, though even places like Borders or Barnes&Noble should carry them too.

I bet you suck as a person. :)

I think the problem with the movie is that it dragged on for too long. If it was an hour and a half, then it would've been fine.

Sin City is the movie Lucas wish he had -- the film that shows what digital filmmaking can do and pretty much changes the way the format will be handled.

Rodriguez has used the format for more than just making effects shots easier, it's probably right that without those pretty Sony HD cameras of his, he couldn't have made Sin City at all.

It also shows that with the right directors, and not Kerry Conran and George Lucas, actors in front of a green screen can work.

I find it ironic that Rodriguez gave up John Carter of Mars to work on Sin City, and was replaced by Kerry Conran, (who directed Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow) a man who tried the whole green screen/digital filmmaking process with a lot of the ambition, but none of the soul that Rodriguez and Miller's Sin City has.

So I guess if this movie here to get a sequel you all want it to be centered on "Hell and Back"? Why is that and how would that work?

I swear, if Fever Pitch gets number #1 this week instead of Sin City again......blood in the streets.

New editions of Family Values and Hell and Back just came out too, I think. Booze Broads and Bullets... I dunno. You could still order the older editions, but they don't match up in size.

Remember to search and order using the GAF toolbar if you go with Amazon.

Thanks for the help. I was just at Chapters, but yeah, it's like $5 cheaper at Amazon. Is $15-16 the norm? I think I'll get the ones in the movies, and not spoil myself on the other ones until I know there's a sequel coming or not.

Nah, I'd just expect another trio of stories. My vote's for A Dame to Kill For, Hell and Back, and... well, probably an expanded version of Silent Night. A Dame to Kill For is the most obvious choice, because it brings back almost everybody: Dwight, Gail, Miho, Marv, Nancy, Shelley, Manute, and Goldie/Wendy. It'd be practically the same cast as before.

LakeEarth: Family Values is the cheapest, at $12USD (not counting Amazon's typical discount). Hell and Back is the most expensive, at $28USD (over 300 pages long). The rest fall between $15-20USD.

There's several things Miller and Rodriguez can do, including putting some short stories together. I think Hell and Back is the most coherent of the later Miller books, though.

I'm going to do my part by taking my father this weekend. Although, he's a tough sale because he heard a guy's genitals get ripped off. I told him it's cool, though!

Cool. Is Family Values any good?

If you like Miho, then yeah it's good. Dwight and Miho are investigating a shooting at a diner (or gas station?) that's got the mob's prints all over it, for reasons I can't really discuss without spoiling the plot. Along the way, Miho gets plenty of opportunity to do what she does best... on inline skates, no less.

Sounds awesome. I'm gonna try to hold myself back on buying all of them though. I need moneys.

How do you do the Amazon thing up top. You search for what you want...but do you get it to count for more than one item?

If you haven't already picked up the 'Sin City: Making of the Movie' book by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez then I strongly recommend you do so. NOW!

The book contains the complete screenplay for the film along with accompanying stills as well as chapters on PreVis Tests, the Props, Costumes, Cars, Storyboards and Poster Concepts. Interesting thing about the stills is that there are a couple of them for some of the deleted scenes with finished Visual FX shots that will be reincorporated back into the film for the DVD release like:
Marv climbing the apartment block to Lucille's room, Marv sneaking into his mom's place to retrieve Gladys, beating down on Weevil to "spread the word", Hartigan's wife and Mort in the hospital room, Hartigan calling Lucille and the whole confession and more.

Another interesting bit of info from the book was that Rodriguez also shot some pre-vis test footage from A Dame To Kill For and Booze, Broads and Bullets. The test shot from ADTKF actually ended up in the finished film at the end of That Yellow Bastard where...
Hartigan shoots himself. It's actually footage of Mort shooting himself.

Definately a must have if you're a fan of the comics and movie.

a dame to kill for is a must, and to hell and back would own (if they really do this with depp as lead) and be hella interesting to see it pan out on the screen.

and id also love to see Family values as well...ive always loved miho the best.

with that said....i still dont get one thing.

spike maybe you can answer this
what is the deal with Manute. i dont know if big fat kill comes before or after to hell and back but EITHER WAY.....Manute is alive and Dies in Both....WTF?!
