Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - Best movie you haven't seen!

My pick for most overlooked movie of 2004, now is your chance to redeem your soul and own it on DVD!

For those who don't know anything about this film, it started as a six-minute CG demo on someone's home computer, and ended up as $60-million Hollywood production shot entirely against blue screen (everything in the movie except the actors was computer generated)... If I were to describe it I'd say it's some sort of a comic book/anime/hollywood hybrid that is insanely fun to watch.

Special Collector's Edition? Where's the normal edition?

It's the only edition released, only 1 disc (available in Widescreen or Fullscreen), and considering the movie bombed at the box office it's very unlikely that another edition will be released later.

It was a fun flick with weak plot and weak progression. Visually it was stunning.
I'll be picking this up on DVD for sure. I can't imagine not having this in my collection somewhere.

I love how the only editions of movies are collectors editions.

Haha yeah... I guess the norm these days is that if a DVD has a good helping of supplements then it's automatically labeled "Collector's/Special Edition", and the bigger edition [if available] gets a "Extreme/Ultimate/Platinum/etc" label.

That's a horrible description, as there's absolutely nothing "anime" about it. :p

Imagine what "The Rocketeer" should've been; imagine Buck Rogers and Indiana Jones having some bizarre, ray gun-toting, gadget-mongering love child; imagine if the art deco vision of "tomorrow" actually came to pass.

The movie is all about style, the story's pretty thin, but it really doesn't matter. It is your father's comic book brought to life, and it's not lame in the slightest.

I don't know "The Rocketeer" or "Buck Rogers", but I couldn't help but get anime-vibes from certain scenes/images in the movie, and apparently I'm not the only one:

From DVDFile's review:

This film is a work of art. A surrealistic concoction of period sci-fi, film noir, action-adventure, and a hint of Anime, it is a remarkable achievement.

Whether you believe it or not, the director insists the movie cost a hell of a lot less than the $60 million or so that the media was toting around.

I never bothered to see it, but I'll probably Netflix it. The trailers just oozed of style-over-substance and the plot seemed completely inane and disengaging, even to the actors.

I wouldn't find that hard to believe at all, I kind of expected it to cost much less, but that's the figure I got from IGN's review, IMDB lists it at an estimated $40 million though.

Seen it, loved it - but a guilty pleasure much like Starship Troopers, ie heavy on the ham and cheese. :)

I freakin' love the vehicle concepts.

Exactly what I thought about the movie. Really wish it had as better story and less predictable "twist" at the end.

1) That was my point, it's really fucking stupid when studios are releasing ULTIMATE COLLECTOR's EDITION as the initial release with normal extras and not a limited run. They need to stop doing that.

2) If the $40 million budget is to believed, they already made their money back and then some at the box office before a single DVD was sold, so I wouldn't consider that "bombing".

As for the movie, I'll buy it for the amazing visual effects alone. The acting from the main characters wasn't that great, but the imagery in many instances is just terrific.

i saw this movie 5 days ago, it was quite good. i liked the style of it.

but i wish they had told the story with a bit more work behind it. at some points it was like there where scenes missing in the film.

I might watch it at some point, but I'm not too sure on that one. It just seemed to get a lot of negative press for its plot, etc. if not for its visual bravado. Might be worth watching for just that, though.

Er, how do you figure? The movie made $53 million worldwide, and the studios don't receive the entire gross. Add in the cost of the extensive marketing campaigns, and I really don't think Sky Captain broke even in theaters. Even if you halved Box Office Mojo's estimate for the marketing costs ($35m), it would still have been impossible for the movie to break even.

*assuming a budget of $40 million

The production design's beautiful in many parts, and the first ten minutes rocked, but once the story itself gets going everything goes downhill. The dialogue is leaden, the plot lurches from one action sequence to the next, and actors seem to have the same problem that they have in Star Wars Episode 1--they don't look comfortable acting against imaginary backdrops, and sometimes seem to be looking in the wrong direction, etc.

It's a pretty movie, but writer/director Kerry Conran's inexperience shows--he's good with technology, but not storytelling.

Yes--the usual figure that's bandied about in H'wood with respect to box office sales is that the worldwide gross of a film has to be 2.5x the film's budget in order for the film to break even.

This movie was one of the most boring I've ever seen and couldn't even bring myself to finish watching it, which is quite unusual.

Oh, and Rocketeer >>> this boring piece of CG crap!

You know. I'm quite forgiving for movies, compared to some people on GAF....but I'm sorry, Sky Captain was just dire....I fell asleep twice watching it.

I saw this, and I couldn't even enjoy the "action" scenes. What a bore bore bore.

I know what they were attampting, but I think thy fell short of keeping audience enjoyment (who may not have bought into the same mind frame as the maker) in mind.

Also, the filtered look got old like in 2 minutes, and got more and more annoying as the movie wore on.

i really thought the movie really really lacked, it was pretty yes... and the ending absolutely had me rolling.... but the movie itself wasn't that good ;/

Awesome movie...just as good the 2nd time around.

I liked the movie in general, but that fight scene at the rocket launch was fucked up awful. There was just no impact at all.

Then again I also saw Troy the day before, so I can be forgiven for demanding conflict with a bit more *oomph*. (actually felt sorry for the strongman in the beginning; damn).

I enjoyed the movie. I don't have a problem with it's story, because it feels like an old radio drama. It is fitting to take on radio dramas and that era, with the Buck Rogers feel and all since those actors were playing against no real stage as well. You had a couple microphones and people bongos coconuts for horse hooves. Now it's bluescreens and digital sound. Either way, the imagination is limitless and it shows in the designs within the movie. Lines are hammy, plot is quick but keeps that 'mystery' feel to it. The movie feels sectioned off into episodes ending in "What will happen next time..." and once I got into the mood of the movie, I liked it. The plunging into the water, the capture of Dex and his map coordinates, the rocket ship finale. They're all the sort of predicaments that got you to 'tune in next time.'

Had high hopes, but was very disappointed in the film. No memorable characters, bad story, and poor action scenes.
