Skyblivion Developer Diary 6: The Final Stretch Towards Release

Important things:

  • The developers cannot commit to a specific release date yet, but they believe they will achieve their goal of releasing it in 2025
  • The Shivering Isles DLC is being worked on and will come out later
  • More than just a simple remake, it expands locations, redesigns them, and tries to be more faithful to the original vision
  • Some cut content has been restored such as Fort Such (an abandoned ruined city now inhabited by bandits) that was removed towards the end of development
  • Oblivion Gates have more variety. The Deadlands of Mehurnes Dagon will have a new biome called The Severed that is constantly beset by lightning storms and pools of deadly acid
  • Instead of the 7 per-determined Oblivion Gates level, there will be 11 for the Deadlands, further diminishing the monotony of the original
  • New Oblivion realms such as the one of Peiyrite and Boethia (where you will have to fight your way out of a deadly labyrinth against every ace of men and mer)
  • Many (most?) unique weapons and armor have been redesigned. They are no longer just generic recolors of regular weapons with a stat boost but brand new models
  • Gameplay and roleplaying updates that bring it more in line with modern RPGs
  • And much much more

This will almost undoubtedly be superior to Oblivion Remastered and run better to boot. Sure, it won't be as advanced visually, but the tone and feel will be more faithful to the original game.

The remake was fun to look at for like 2 hours but it kinda stinks. Something just felt off. Looking forward to this.

It's also included in GoG's 1 touch mod interface. So probably worth picking up that version while it's on sale if you want this.

Gonna be way better than the remaster and less demanding too plus more moddedable. And it's a actual remake rather than a remaster with tons of changes and improvements and additions.

Don't care which game wins GOTY but Skyoblivion will easily be the true best game of this year if it releases.

If it comes out before the end of the year, I could see it winning best fan creation at TGA.

The remake was really weird. Graphically it looked great, but there was nothing there, you know? When the Imperial city is still as empty as it was in the original, it doesn't really matter if your graphics are photorealistic.

That's why they were careful in just calling it a remaster. I also think, other than Skyrim itself, it's the only time an official graphics-only update could happen with an Elder Scrolls game.

Every other game would have to be remade.

I already have it on GOG 💪.

Didn't buy remastered since it has huge performance issues even on hi-end PC, not to mention consoles.

I'm reading a thread about remastered from time to time just to see if it was patched. And lo and behold it is not.

I saw lately that Skyblivion appeared in GOG Mods so I just one clicked it. And since modders tend to fix Bethesda games more than Bethesda and Skyrim Engine is really flexible to modding it may surpass Remastered in a while with Reshades and Hi-res texture packs for it. I wouldn't underestimate the modding community.

So yeah, Skybilvion and Skywind it is for me.

I liked that it was not too crowded. I was overwhelmed by the potential of having to talk to dozens of characters to initiate quests. I do not think I even interacted with half of them which is fine by me.

I think overall what they are doing is still very impressive and I bet their game will ship in a far more stable and performance way than the official remaster is now, but the vegetation (trees, patches of tall grass, plants, and flowers) does not fit the Oblivion aesthetics at all IMHO. Skyrim went away from SpeedTree and the tech they used for the flora before and it seems to be providing the wrong building blocks. I still hope that it is something this mod can address but they already have so much work to do and they are investing time in creating new areas and redesigning others I do not think they have time to tackle this as well.

Looks really nice. I'm especially interested to see what they will do with revamped Oblivion gates. Hopefully they won't feel as repetitive with these changes as they did in the original

I find it interesting that each of the major fan projects set in Cyrodiil (Skyblivion, Beyond Skyrim Cyrodiil and Project Tamriel) will bring Sutch back. It'll be interesting to see differences between each take at it

I think there will still be a degree of repetition, but a lesser one. The issue with Oblivion Gates isn't just the level design, but the objectives and overall aesthetics and vibes. Even if you completely revamp the layouts and level design, there's only so much you can do to make pools of lava and jagged rock formations not seem and feel repetitive.

The objective will ultimately remain the same. Go in, locate the Sigil Keep, take the stone and leave.
