The Edge issue with Zelda SS review begins with an editorial that also says this game is essential, bringing qualities new to the medium.

It really must be quite something.
Everyone is always playing catch up to Nintendo as far as gameplay goes.

but seriously, what I am interested to see addressed in the reviews is pacing, difficulty and specially if combat is more entertaining.

In the IGN staff editor tweets', he has been asked if the game is hard and he had replied that 'it isn't, but the combat is more complex' (later, or may be earlier, pointing out to the enemies changing their guarding position based on predicting motion of your sword)

I also want to know if the game is charming. One of the main reasons I like Phantom Hourglass more that TP, is that the characters like Linebeck are so charming!

Ghirahim looks like somekind of whimsical psycho currently, and I really love him (probably partly due to being the sole icon of BP, I don't know if I associate BP with him or vice versa anymore!)

This review ends with a similar statement, but it always surprises me when reviews/sites are shocked that Nintendo is capable of making awesome games.

I mean I don't remember that ever not being the point, but its always like "Whoa who knew Nintendo still had it in them?"

eh, ead was on the shit list from 2001-2004. luigi's mansion, super mario sunshine, the wind waker, and mario kart double dash were all games that were rushed or had bad ideas. there wasn't anything on the handheld side to make up for it either. from 2006-now, ead's only made wii music and its many iterations, which are clearly the death of video games and just pure awful, so it's surprising that somewhere they have the talent for a super mario galaxy 2 or twilight princess.

That's insane. I loved all those Gamecube games.
Quality of the games never suffered, I just think people didn't appreciate the direction they took each game. They all still had the polish Nintendo is known for.

Most developers still can't touch Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, or even Double Dash. They were rushed... by the standards of EAD's absolute best. There was never anything there to indicate EAD had "lost it" aside from Nintendo being pressured to make content for the GC and giving in to the temptation to rush games.

After that, it seems clear Nintendo just realized they shouldn't rush EAD / fully internal projects. Thus starting with Twilight Princess the quality went back up and just kept getting better as EAD improved at making 3D games. The noise fanboys cry over with games like the Wii Theme series is funny; despite gamers bawling five years later that Wii Sports, Wii Fit, or Wii Sports Resort are the "death of gaming", those were incredibly high quality products for what they were trying to do (and succeeded at doing). Again, most developers couldn't achieve the same thing.

Certain gamers, and the same kinds of gamers in the gaming press, have a very ephemeral relationship with Nintendo. They hold Nintendo to standards that seem tainted by fannish blinders, possibly because Nintendo tends to make games that become "singularity titles" for individual players. Playing Ocarina of Time or Mario Kart 64 tends to define one's entire life as a gamer, but also creates a kind of delusional nostalgia where even Nintendo's own products can never magically go back and recreate the sensation of puppy love.

So, as regular as clockwork, every time Nintendo makes a merely 9.8 game it's betrayalton, and then when Nintendo makes a 9.9 it's "is it possible? Has Nintendo finally come back after the five thousand year drought since Ocarina of Time/Mario Kart 64/Smash Bros Melee/that one game that was all I played for six months when I was in college and so is really the only Nintendo game I remember?"

Sunshine & Wind Waker are some of the best games of that console generation and Luigi's Mansion was a cool game too, although flawed in many ways.

U be crazyhhh.

I didn't respond because honestly, never know when to take him seriously or not.

Though wanted to read some Metroid Prime reviews, and went to MetaCritic, and discovered that Gamecube and Xbox titles aren't counted on their all-time highest scorers list. Was an interesting omission.

What the shit, man?

The only one we know for sure was rushed is Wind Waker and it's still pretty damn amazing.

The guy reviewing the game from IGN is tweeting some non-spoiler observations about the game as he plays. He says "These shop owners in the bazaar, particularly the Gear Shop, are amazing. So much personality." So that sounds promising in regards to how charming the game is.

If someone just showed me the text for the Edge and GamesTM reviews and told me that one was awarded 9/10, the other 10/10, I would have guessed that the GamesTM review was the 10, Edge the 9.

It goes to show that you really can't read too much into the scores.

whoa whoa whoa, someone is dissing double dash?

DD lan parties just might have been the purest form of visceral FUN I've ever experienced with a video game.

Holy shit, smells like insanity. After the Edge edito & review, I expected something special but this is now out of control!

He says it's the first 10 he's given out since he's been at GI, which is two years. But obviously still good news for Zelda fans.

Yeah hype reaching dangerous levels! Good for nintendo and good for the zelda team. I really hope they can pull out a GOTY with this one. Will wait and see though.

I had concerns that carefully plotting my attacks for every swing would get boring or frustrating, but the opposite was true. I’ve never felt as engaged or interested in the combat portion of a Zelda game as with Skyward Sword. If you run into a group of enemies waggling the Wii remote like a madman, you will be torn to shreds. Success in swordplay depends on studying opponents’ moves and attacking at the right time and from the right angle. When the correct method to defeat each foe finally clicked, I felt a sense of satisfaction that repeatedly tapping the A button never provided.
I always felt motion controls would one day lead us to this conclusion. Having its potential fully realized in a Zelda game is... is... It makes me feel good :)

The chances of SS winning the VGAs is much higher now, I think.

And obviously hes only got to review baby games before this. I'm sure he also would have given Darksiders a 10 if given the chance.

Yeah, to be clear, I have given out a 10 (technically an A+) once before when I was writing for 1UP/EGM. That was for Fallout 3, for those wondering.

Can't wait for others to start playing it so I can actually have some discussions about it!

I dig Darksiders. I wouldn't have given it a 10.

Aww why'd you spoil it.

was gonna be snarky about game informers 9-10 scale making this meaningless, but i trust phil from 1up fm and reading its from him makes me assign it with more worth.

that said i find edge and gi announcing their score days before they release the (full) review weird. seems to help further devalue the text part by putting all the emphasis on the score, as well as make them seem even more of a proxy in a games marketing campaign. just post the whole review with the score when you can.

I think they are just having as hard a time containing their hype as we are. This game must have really given them quite the experience to not be able to wait.
