Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

Nightly update!

Just got in this USB C male to female cable:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FM4ZL2A/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Results!

Stuffed into the dock (and then wedged for stability with a cloth), I can report and confirm great success!

Bear in mind this is with NO USB accessories attached - so down the line we'll have to see what happens.

Playing Fast Racing RMX with the Switch DOCKED:

Power draw maxed out at 16.8 Watts while charging Switch simultaneously.

Playing Fast Racing RMX with the Switch connected via female-to-male USB C cable:

I can't speak for Zelda since I haven't opened it yet, but the numbers for this test were identical on my Kill-A-Watt meter, no matter how it was connected.

Now, I'm not a power expert, neither do I claim to be. I can just provide my own info, and here - a picture to show the setup! You can see the dock is lit green, with the cable going into the Switch.

I have zero intention of BS'ing anyone - these are just MY findings at 1080p playing Fast Racing RMX. Now, both in the dock and connected via a cable - charging is SLOW when playing a game, but this is to be expected, apparently, - according to Anandtech's power tests. So the male-to-female setup is NOT at a disadvantage at this point, and is a super simple workaround. It also helps with those of us (like me) that have no room to shove the Switch in the dock without pulling it out of the shelf.

So there you go!

On the plus side, too, because the Switch is out in the open when docked, you may notice better JoyCon connectivity. YAY for positive side-effects!

Thanks! Just ordered the 1.6 ft cable

Update on the amfilm tempered glass protector.

I put the protector on my screen monday early afternoon. I left the device off for roughly 2.5/3 hours. After that I played zelda undocked for about an hour then docked for about 4. Today I played Zelda docked for about 4 more hours and I am seeing zero issues with the adhesive holding it on my screen. Now it's possible that there is a different adhesive on these which could lead to some people having issues. But I believe that if you let your console settle once the screen on is you won't have any issues.

Thanks for this! Mine is coming Saturday so this helps.

Also, love the avatar. Seeing them in May for like 12th time.

Has anyone who has a tempered glass screen protector installed on the screen already noticed any scratches on the screen protector? Trying to decide if I'll continue to use the dock after installing my protector or just order the USB C extension cable.

Last time I checked this thread was that big post of the guy sliding his Switch in and out of the dock repeatedly and unable to make a scratch.

Any developments since then? Is this a relatively minor problem, or what? Just trying to figure out how some are scratching their screens very easily while others can't scratch it at all.

I personally think it is a bit overblown. Perhaps I've just been lucky, but there are no marks on mine yet, and my dock is angled. I guess we'll need more time to see if all this is a big deal or not. I still think that some of the pictures I've seen look to be caused by something else, especially since some show scratches in a near horizontal direction.

That said, adding screen protection to the Switch seems like a sensible thing no matter what.

Yes - he ended up scratching it. However it took a far amount of effort on his part.

Seems like the best thing to do is - Get a screen protector, be careful docking/undocking and make sure no particles are stuck to screen/dock that could cause scratches from the sliding. If needed expand the dock using methods described in this thread.

Doesn't seem like anyone is exactly 100% sure how its all happening to varying degrees. Maybe some docks have sharper edges. Maybe some screens have softer plastic. Some Docks are most certainly bent and maybe putting on more pressure than others.

So I've been using the dock, I don't seem to have any issues. Based on how long this thread has gotten, it seems others have.

It's only been a few days, so who knows.

mh strange, my amFILM screen protector started having this small bubbles problem like some others reported on reddit:

crazy thing is tho, it started this morning. like, I went to bed after playing zelda for 8 hours and everything looked perfect, I took the switch out of the dock to look at it before going to bed and put it on my table. this morning when I started playing in handheld mode I saw this.

now, I played zelda in docked mode for 8 hours again today and the problem has not gotten worse. it stayed the same. Can't be the heat. Maybe I did not clean the screen well enough before applying? or the adhesive is not as strong as it should be at the edge of the screen.

I think that is it. I have a soft protector and didn't play docked at all yesterday and when I woke up today there are two bubbles in the upper right corner that I can't get out.

with my glass screen protector I can press the mini bubbles out, but they come back after a few minutes.

now mind you, as long as it stays this small, I've no problem with it. I'll wait a few more days. if it gets worse, I'll let you all know.

Just a question. When you out the screen on how long did you wait between application and playing the system?

This is why I find screen protectors highly unappealing. Even if it looks perfect at first, over time its going to develop imperfections and that shit drives me nuts. My amfilm is coming in today, but I think I'm just going to order the cable and be done with this stupid dock situation.

playing docked? I waited 48 hours
playing in handheld mode? 2 hours

Interesting. I wonder if some of the amfilm screens have better adhesives than others. I waited about the same length. Maybe a tad longer but I haven't had any issues. I applied mine on Monday afternoon.

Monday at 1PM :) I honestly thing it is the adhesive. not "melting" or something like that. the middle of the screen is perfect and only these really small bubbles started to happen. mostly/only around the left and right speaker area.

I hope it does not get worse. I'll write TechMatte, the reseller who sells them on amazon.de an email. but like I said, if they stay this small, I'll let the screen protector on the screen..I don't want to clean off the adhesive ~_~..

Yeah, I mean - I guess I just wanna hear some people say they frequently dock and undock and have yet to see any scratches to confirm it's not happening to everybody.

Only one person here, but I've docked/undocked a dozen or more times and have yet to see an issue. Just be to safe though, I shoved stuff in there for a few hours to widen it.

Just got Amazon notification saying that my amFilm tempered glass order has shipped. If you have one on backorder, check your order status!

My amFilm protector arrived today and applied perfectly.

If it starts lifting up at the edges, I'm taking it off, especially since my dock doesn't seem to have issues. I just get smudges near the bottom where the bezel comes in contact with the rubber.

Is there anything I need to do, or that you recommend, before applying this screen protector? I'm currently using the one that came with the official carry case and made a right balls up of the whole thing. Got dust trapped underneath, and I think some smudged on the underside >_>

I have rubbing alcohol and microfiber cloths. That's about all I'll need right? This protector is easy to apply though, right?

You should be safe, then. I get the same smudges, and they come right off using a cleaning wipe or even a soft cloth with a bit of moisture.

Just so I order the exact one you tested, did you order the 1 ft cable or the 1.6 ft cable?? Thanks for the testing!!

it's all in the manual and it is super easy to apply. but even if you do it perfect..it can happen. look how mine looked right after applying.

Any special steps aside from wiping with a Microfiber cloth? I was actually considering sitting in the bathroom with the hot shower on to prevent dust.

The amFilm set of two from Amazon comes with a bunch of stuff on its own (cleaning wipes, plastic card, instructions, dust stickers), so I think you're set!

(I had a compressed air duster that I used instead of the dust stickers. There's a tiny groove around the bezel that catches dust particles, so I wanted to make sure those were gone just in case, too. Not really necessary.)

Basically just ran a hot shower without a fan for like 5-6 minutes, enough to get the bathroom a little foggy. Took the Switch in, cleaned it with the wipes (wet then dry), peeled off the adhesive side while keeping the protector facing downward, lined it up, and smoothed it out. Pretty painless. :)

I made sure to press around the edges, too. Not sure if letting it sit for 24 hours or so without powering it on is a requirement, but I don't really have time to play until the weekend anyway.

You should be safe, then. I get the same smudges, and they come right off using a cleaning wipe or even a soft cloth with a bit of moisture.
Good, lol. :D

Use the hinge method guys to apply your glass screen protectors. Guaranteed perfect alignment every time. Don't just remove the adhesive and try to line it up by eyeballing, it's slow, imprecise, and will take too long meaning dust will more likely fly under and get trapped.

I would buy a screen protector if that song played while I was installing it. That's some good shit.

After no email reply in 3 days and being on hold for the 3rd time tonight, I finally spoke to an actual human. I've to send it back for "assessment"

I think you all are a bit nutty...

A couple of things though - with how the dock is packed in the box I can easily see it getting bent, there is no support inside the package and if it gets too hot during shipment it can easily deform. I expect them to put a piece of cardboard in there to prevent this later.

My dock seems pretty good. If your dock is bent though adding extra crap (screen protectors or felt strips) is going to make the problem worse. I would try bending (or extension cable) rather than making the fit tighter.

Most of these scratches look like scuff marks.

The extreme examples look like someone was trying to attach the joy cons while docked.

I stuffed a snes cartridge overnight. Didn't seem to do much. Wonder how many hours it would take. :P

To really change the angle you need to apply some heat, I suspect that is what is bending the docks in the 1st place. They lay flat in the box with no support. Can get very hot on cargo trucks/boats/ect, dock bends inwards then hold that shape when it cools down.

I do that every time. I also remove them while docked. No scratches.

I did that a few times but this thread made me nervous! I think I am going to get the stupid charge holder or open my pro controller so I can leave the joy cons on.

Okay so I just applied the Hori screen protector that came today, in a steamed bathroom, which only helped a bit to be honest. The protector itself is really easy to put on, as long as you align everything up okay, then you just take it step by step. I was so paranoid I kept wiping under the plastic before taking the covers off. Ended up placing it on, but a couple of dust particles came out of bloody nowhere and crept inside like trolls (one fairly long) which was super annoying. Apart from that, no air bubbles or anything.

I sat there thinking if I should lift the left side of the protector to remove the two dust particles, but gave up in the end after failing to remove the protector with tape. Probably for the best as I know I'd have made it worse or more dust making it inside. Not a fan of screen protectors, but hopefully this will help any minor scratches to the sides. Also, when actually playing a game, you cannot see the dust particles that do end up getting trapped inside anyway. So if you do happen to get a couple of dust specs, might be best to just leave it be and deal with it!

Glad I bought it anyway. Not using any USB-C adapters or anything and going to stick with keeping the unit docked where it's supposed to be.

P.s. Sesuadra, that looks flawless :o I spent nearly half an hour on the damn thing, being so careful, in the steamed bathroom, and still a couple of specs got inside. Also a very minor line down the middle where the Hori protector splits in two parts.

I have tempered glass on the way, but have put 3ds screen proectors on the bottom corners in the meantime due to dock scares.

I'm hoping these will be easy to remove when the time comes.

I am experimenting the dock solutions.

Will probably try some light heat and diffuse it while having a book inside.

Sounds like the safest way to unbend it.

I put a book in my bent dock for maybe a day and then docked. Haven't removed it since.

So if i undock it and it's really bent again, what kind of heat should i apply?

Hairdrier? Put it outside in Florida?

Dock Cozies are completely about to become a thing now aren't They? How funny would it be if this were the thing to catapult the Switch into mainstream meme appeal like all the viral "Wiimote through TV screen" gifs.
