Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

Found this from another forum i post on, a forum members girlfriend made it for him:

I saw something similar on Reddit and the poster there said they got the material from Joann.com. I just looked there and if you search for 'Nintendo' you can find a lot of awesome designs. I got a yard of fabric.

Now I just need to figure out how the hell to sew...

lol

I am just going to buy a finished one when I find someone selling.

You can also get fabric tape at Joann's that you heat with an iron to create seams. That way you dont have to mess with sewing if you dont have a machine.

I like that idea enough I might do that myself. I'm not worried about scratches, but that looks adorable.

Here is my upload of the Hori protector attempt I spent far too long doing:

eq155U3l.png

You can see the two dust specs on the left that got inside, after checking so many times before sliding the cover off the protector! you can see a faint line down the middle, which is where the Hori protector splits in two halves (harder to see in the image actually). The circle on the bottom right is a light reflection. Way better than my first failed attempt with the one which came with the official case anyway.

so, what are the chances everyone with scratched bezels are getting scratches because something is falling into their dock that scratches the screen and its not the plastic dock nubs, themselves

Just got my tempered glass screen protector. I have a regular screen protector on it but will be switching it. Never used a tempered glass protector before. Any pro-tips from those that are experienced with the tempered glass protectors?

Pretty low, I think the dock's design along with the Switch screen's resistance to materials really are the culprits here.

Don't screen protectors inherently impact the look of the screen? Its a physical device being put (with glue) in front of a light emitting device. I know its not a huge different, but something really rubs me the wrong way to make something worse for the protection it offers.

The films sure do in my limited experience but I am in love with glass ones. You can get those crystal clear and they go on easily, no bubbles.

Wow... no. There is no glue on modern screen protectors.

And no, there is zero discernible visual difference with good quality ones, and there are many good quality ones these days.

The only bad part is that some people have trouble putting them on properly, because it requires patience and care. But learn good technique, and they're awesome.

I honestly think people should be more vocal about this and demand a mass recall of the docks or at least a statement from Nintendo. I'm still too scared to put my Switch in the dock and I shouldn't have to pay money out of pocket for a solution.

I googled "screen protector effect on light wavelength or intensity" and received no worthwhile results. I'm guessing that basically any and all all materials are going to filter out some level of light intensity or wavelength effectively making the image worse.

You sure? Pretty sure its a silicone based glue.

Got my Switch and the amFilm Glass Screen Protector today, was easy to apply and I don't think I ever got one so clean before lol no dust or anything under the glass :)

went to play some Zelda with it docked for a few minutes before I remembered to wait a few hours before getting it hot so turned it off and I'm going to wait a bit before I really get into it.

I'll report back if the screen starts to come up later but atm it's nice and clean.

Wouldn't those make the device hotter by blocking the flow of air?

For putting it on? I just did my switch. I used the stickers provided to remove dust as a hinge of sorts so I could just swing the screen into place when ready. Used the shower trick, got the bathroom nice and humid, gave the screen one last wipe and put it on. Came on nearly perfect except for one piece of hair or some shit that barely got under in a top corner. Can barely see it though.

People who have issues will be plenty vocal. People who don't most likely won't, and people who don't have the problem, but are sitting around working themselves up over it can't be helped. I guess call Nintendo and let them know if such an issue occurs.

Got my am tempered glass today. It's been outside all day so I'm letting the package come up to room temp before attempting to put it on.

Is it the actual dock that scratches it? I really like this idea and it seems easy enough. But I thought the issue wasn't the actual dock but having something on it like a spec of dirt and grinding that between your screen and the dock.

I could be wrong, though. I'm personally just going to use an extension for now until we know more.

Any tips on putting the amFilm Glass protector on? Really don't want to get any dust under it and I've not used these kind before. Mine just arrived today so will be doing it soon.

Isn't the screen on every Switch going to eventually scratch due to the dock unless you apply some sort of external solution? Correct me if I'm wrong and maybe I'll take my chances.

:o nice one. How did you manage to get no dust particles at all?! Tried so hard with the hot shower on steaming the room and everything haha. But I did only get maybe 3 dust particles in, one being quite long which was annoying.

It's super easy, just follow the instructions. Run a hot shower, clean the screen using the included wet and dry pads, then basically just line 'er up and set 'er down.

I did exactly that, no visible dust on screen at all, until the "set 'er down" part and a couple of troll dust particles decided to jump inside that very second out of nowhere :p was SO careful. I think I shouldn't have kept wiping the screen under with the microfibre cloth before finally removing the peel (only lifted it up a tiny amount though).

I couldn't remove the protector after though, even with tape :/ so I decided to leave it in the end. It's going to bug me every time I have it undocked now though.

Never use screen protectors though, been very careful with things like my Vita and its fine, but then again that's glass.

Been using mine since release (actively) and no issues. I only got the screen protector as I always do that for every product I own. I'm certainly not one to speak for everyone, but from what I've seen on Reddit and such, there are plenty of others with no scratches.

If you're really worried about it, then you can always try a tempered glass protector, but if you're not up for that, then I know know what to suggest really. Worst come to worst, it sounds like Nintendo have been pretty easy to deal with regarding warranty thus far.

Lol. I had one white hair get under mine too. I'm so crazy about things like that and it's sooooo minor, but I can't stop looking over. It's not even on the screen, just the edge of the bezel. I think I'll just leave it be though.

If you do get something under the protector, just lift it up and use a piece of tape to grab it.

It's very easy.

Hey poppyseed! :P

does the dock spring push out the extension cable?

It does if you pull on it a little. I just wedged a cloth in the dock where the cable is, so there's no issue.

Just so I order the exact one you tested, did you order the 1 ft cable or the 1.6 ft cable?? Thanks for the testing!!

I ordered the 1ft cable. I would expect (but not guarantee) the 1.6ft cable should work just the same.

And welcome to the number 1 reason I refuse to use a screen protector. Dust particles, - even ONE, would drive me nuts. And the idea of trying to get one of those screen protectors off scares me even more. Sometimes you have to use a sharp object or a long fingernail to dig under the age and lift it up.. Ugh... scratches everywhere! :D

Yeah it's very annoying and I'll probably look at it whenever I undock my Switch. Hate dust particles on the screen like that, especially when stuck. The only reason I've done this is because of this stupid docking issue making me paranoid. Think a lot of us here have issues :p.

I was able to remove the one which came with the official case fine, just stick tape on and move it outwards and not up and it will lift up. But tried a few times with this Hori one and wouldn't lift up at all, so I left it be.

I've tried straightening my dock with a book for more than 24 hours with no change. Do I need to use a hair dryer too to get it to change any?

Well I got both the Switch and Protector today so it didn't have much time to get anything on it, I turned off my fans in my room and gave it a good wipe with the included wet/dry wipes and just knocked it out quick before anything could get on it :)

I figured if I messed up I would try the shower thing with the second one but it came out perfect on the first so I got a backup if I ever need it. (since it comes with 2)

Oh yeah. I'm crazy. Those hori ones from my ps vita days were the bane of my existence. I had to put one on for everyone in the house and I'd be huddled over the table like a madman trying to prevent dust from getting under. Seeing as how my switch one is so perfect otherwise, I think I'll manage though.

Put strips of tape on the edge, peel it away and then use a piece of tape to pull the dust off the back of the protector/screen. Repeat until perfect.

Wasn't it concluded earlier in the thread that putting felt, microfiber, etc. between the screen and the inside of the dock would actually increase the chance of scratches?

Ow really? thats a shame I don't have switch yet so wouldn't know, I just wanted to share my findings as it looks great.

I don't get how nintendo overlooked the dock scratching issue? they usually build good products.

I would not recommend the dock cozy thing, that's for sure. You increase the pressure on the screen, and then you're sliding the entire screen down a surface like that which will pick up dust etc from sitting out. Recipe for disaster.

I think the USB extension cable is the best method, and since it almost certainly helps/mitigates the JoyCon signal by being not encased in a dock, I say its the best/cheapest method out there, with other added bonus side-effects.

It does look very nice, but I think the issue is it decreases the already very tight clearance between the exposed screen and the dock.

Ugh, Nintendo, this was such a garbage design choice.

Dr Scholl's mole skin applied to the inside rails of the dock and so far so good. I still have a glass screen protector coming. It's a snug fit, but I hope the screen protector isn't very thick.

Wouldn't those make the device hotter by blocking the flow of air?

I don't think so, there's no ventilation going on at the front of the dock.

As far as scratching goes... that's a good point. Hmm. And it's not like I need any padding, my dock doesn't seem to hurt the screen at all.

But it's so cuuuuute! I just want one for the look. Especially in the pattern I ordered.

I have another question, let's say I go ahead and buy a USB-C cable to connect from my dock to the Switch. Is there any one in particular I should look out for? Is it called a male to female cable? I've read in the past that cheap USB-C cables can brick hardware.

Mine went almost as smooth. Had a few hairs and dust particles that I could not live with so I used the stickers to get them out and finally have it on with near perfection. Anything underneath is not noticeable when playing so I can live with that.

Going to bed playing Zelda a bit before sleepy sleeps. Meanwhile, let's see how that goes for my bent dock :

wxAM4iY.jpg

(The things we have to do, I swear...smh.)

The 'microfiber draped over the edge' method seems to be working for me so far. I periodically shake the cloth off too to prevent dust buildup. So far, so good.

I know Im not helping the issue but if they ever came out with a frontless dock, Id buy one immediately. Im sick of this paranoia already.

Not sure but I'd wager some people with scratches are being too rough with docking/undocking it.

I think it was in crowbcat's video but I saw someone grab the Switch by the corner and lift it out sideways/diagonally from the dock. No possible way that's good for it. I always place the console flush into the dock and pull it flush out of the dock.

I put my tempered glass protector on today from AnFilm or w/e. I didn't do it perfectly, there are some air bubbles in top right corner and in the top center part of the protector. None on the actual gameplay part of the screen. I can deal with it, I spent about 20minutes trying to get those 2 spots out but never could. I think I put the protector on up too far, it should have been a bit down. No pics sorry.
