Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

Why would you need to power it off?

I never leave any electrical device in my house in a sleep or standby mode. No chance I'm giving my electrical supplier more money than I need to, their prices are already over the top (and keep rising year on year).

I have zero issue with waiting those extra few seconds for X device to power up.

Further on to this in regards to USB-C extension cables. Turns out the whole concept of an extension is a violation of the spec. I reached out to Benson Leung on twitter about Type-C extensions.

Just be cautious to those thinking of buying...

Have there been any reports of this cable breaking things? Chances of problems occurring in the long run? I have one on the way (being delivered tomorrow) and would actually like to use it.

Probably little chance of anything bad happening. Sounds more like the kind of thing where Apple says don't use anything but official adapters to charge your iPad! And you know how that goes.

1) constant power drain

2) damages battery life over time

3) glitches some TV to force it to display Switch input

4) people do what they want

Yeah man I want to do this too. Im gonna sound stupid but how exactly do you power this thing down? Anyone know?

Take it out of the dock, hold the power button, and go into the menu and choose to power it off.

However, I power mine down and then dock it and it still does the HDMI thing.

Well yeah the console turns on when you dock it een if its fully powered down i think

Are you guys still getting scratches with amfilm glass protector? I installed mine yesterday but it'll be a good long while until I remove the switch from the dock again.

The girlfriend made me a switch dock sock and I have a screen protector too. Finally feel better about using the Switch.

My dock is bent and I get the same wiggle when I push the power button on the docked console. So, at least I know that mine isn't too snug even though it's bent. I don't have any scratches either.

Also, I don't think you can have the system docked, with power going to it, and have it completely powered off. So you can use the controller to put it into sleep mode. I'm pretty sure you can also use the controller to wake it up (assuming they aren't attached) as well.
you can fully power it off by holding power, power options, power off.

What? You can turn on the console with the home button, and turn it off from the main menu or the quick menu. No need to ever press the power button on the console itself while it's docked...

I am aware...that's sleep mode, I said "IF i want to power it on/off"

Every console (or device) that turns on from a bluetooth command, or any remote wireless signal, is in a standby state of sorts, like a TV also is. It's just not something that mobile devices support most often. They do usually instead support a low-power suspend mode (as the PS4/XB1 do, but with the added benefit of a battery as a power backup).

I guess if you really really want fully off you just have to open hand of remote turning on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had this friend who would fully turn off his iPad every time after he was done using it... mad thing.

Yep, I know you can fully power it off. I'm pretty sure that if you power it off and then dock it the system will turn on and go into sleep mode.

I'd be amazed if the 'constant power drain' and battery strain is over 0.05W in standby given that this is a mobile Tegra chip. There's probably more drain from the USB ports if you have anything connected.

As for #4, if you're doing something against the system's design because it's 'what you want' then it's really more your problem than anyone's that it's hard to do. It's hard to do because it wasn't designed to do it.

Here's a hastily taken picture of my dock.

I...think it's bent? It's kind of hard to tell because you see the interior of the dock from the side and it throws you off a bit. If you follow the exterior lines on both sides it's only very slightly bent.

Also the angle the photo was taken at isn't really helping either. It makes the top look smaller than the bottom just because of the perspective.

Mine is a bit bent like that too. I think that's normal?

So... I tried a couple things to ensure my screen doesn't get scratched.

First... I tried taping a couple soft screen cleaners to the inside. This made the Switch slide in pretty tightly, and I worried that if any dirt or dust got on the screen cleaners, that would probably cause scratches too because it was so tight.

So instead... I ordered one of these...

It came in this morning and it works perfectly and doesn't look half bad either. Now my Switch can sit outside of the dock and have more ventilation too and have zero chance of being scratched by the dock.

Pretty ridiculous that we need to jump through all these hoops. Joys of jumping in on day one I guess.

Where's that rack from? It looks sweet.

Any definitive answers on whether or not wedging something in the dock can flex is out the proper way? I figure it wouldn't hurt even though my dock isn't too bad, but I figure plastic has a pretty good memory and would eventually return to its original position anyway.

I would think it would snap. It's pretty hard plastic.

You unplug your cable boxes?

I'd recommed taking off the moleskin strip which touches the back of the Switch. You really don't need both sides covered (especially that your dock bends in), and making it a tight fit won't be good in the long run, and especially for ventilation.

I was mulling over this as well. I will heed your advice. I was a bit concerned because it was a tight fit. Less pressure = better for the Switch.

Well if any scratches occur it would be on the screen protector itself and not on the switch screen. I only installed it yesterday and I docked it and undocked it a couple times, haven't noticed anything.

I received the amfilm today and plan to go home and apply after work. Say for some reason I don't like it, can you remove it at will without messing the screen up?

Man reading that title.... but anyway

I have had a small book wedged in there and it has temporarily widened the gap, but it always moves back.

1) Shirt and hot iron to help soften the plastic to reform.

2) Hairdryer on extreme head dry mode and moving it across.

My dock was severely bent so the too hard plastic rail wrecked my screen proctecor. Thankfully only on the outside of the bezel. I want to widen this thing and then apply a small rubber pad or micro fiber piece to the top of the hard rail to assist in movement and dock in location.

I will post a follow up, but which is the least dumb from the two above I posted. I also am trying to be weary of doing too much at once so I don't damage the internal cable/mobo in there.

This is a good idea! I'll be doing this.

If it's bent that badly I'd honestly just call up Nintendo for a warranty replacement of just the dock.

So there isn't any perfect screen protector for this thing, huh?

- The AmFilm tempered glass has tiny bubbles appear around the edges of the screen.

- The Hori premium warps with heat while docked.

- The official Nintendo protector doesn't fit correctly and air gets trapped in around the bezel.

Is this accurate? So basically I should wait for a better solution to come around?

The subsonic one has no defect with air and bubbles except for...

The thing is a bit smaller than the actual screen so one of the holes is misplaced and it doesn't cover one of the bezel entirely.

Can you put it on its side and use the "level" feature of the compass app on your iPhone to be sure?

You might as well get a cheap one while you wait, even if it's flawed. Beats not having any protection.

People are still waiting for their Orzly orders, but maybe that one is better.

I tried a 3rd party one from Best Buy first which was total junk. It was too big for the screen which created bubbles.

I got the Nintendo one on it and it works perfectly for me. I'm ultra OCD about bubbles and stuff and I was able to get it on so that you really have to look to notice that a screen protector is even on it.

I was thinking of just simply buying the cheapo Nintendo branded one for the time being but from what I've seen, the issues would drive me nuts. Plus I can't find one so that doesn't help, haha.

That looks pretty good actually. I saw a YouTube video of a guy applying that thing and it looked awful. Maybe he just did a piss poor job at applying it. For as cheap as it is I should just give it a shot until the ultimate solution comes around.

People have said the regular hori is fine and the amfilm works for the majority who used them. Mine looks great.

I found the Nintendo one easier to apply than the 3rd party one too. The film you peel off splits in two horizontally, letting you apply the top portion first, then the bottom portion.

You unplug your cable boxes?

No cable boxes, stopped watching TV many years ago. When I did have SKY Tv (UK) I powered that box off when not using it, but I do get that people have shows being recorded etc when they aren't physically using the box.

Literally the only device I leave on when not using it is probably the fridge/freezer.

(and my phone)

My official Nintendo protector which came with the case is fine. Went on very easy.

There is no option 3

I agree in all honesty, and if this messes up I will more than likely do a ticket item with them for it, but I think I am good by to try this and go balls to the wall rather than not keep being able to use the dock.

For people with normal working socks, does the Switch have a slight wobble to it, like a couple of millimeters? Trying to determine my stretch threshold.

Not really. Its the exact size of the screen+ bezel. I have it misaligned on the right side by, like, a nano meter. Because of this the upper right area goes a teeny tiny above the bezel and two tiny bubbles have appeared that I can't get out.

But if it had been applied perfectly I don't think there would be any issues.
