Hey, they changed the opening credits. And it looks great too.

I'm definitely hyped for this season. It'll be great. I really have high hopes for it. The writers/producers seem like they have a real goal for it.

Does it have anything to do with a shark? Or did they already make that jump?

Nope, they just had a bad 4th season like Buffy and 24. ;]

The problem was that season 4 was all over the place and nothing flowed together well at all. Everything I've read about this season says the exact opposite.

I've always wanted to get in on this show(being a comic Supes reader and familiar with the movies) but never got around to it(though I've watched an ep occasionally)... this seems like a great spot to jump in... and cool.... a Zod reference!

So who's gonna play zod? I saw James marsters in a little highlight clip for the new season, is it gonna be him?

I wonder if they will finally make the jump to actual Superman or keep the same boring, high school teenager shit that's been going on like forever.

Holy shit is that the Phantom Zone?!?!??!

Cool it's even got a similar sound to the original movie one....

SWeeeet the Phantom Zone rocks!!!!

Clark is already f**king up. He broke his word to Jor-El. Lana would have been alright, he should have went back to the Fortress.

You mean as in actual costume and flying? That will never happen in the show, because then it isn't about Superman. (And I think we all know how lame the costume looks on a TV show with their small budget.)

This season is "Superman in training", as the producers put it. It's building Clark up to become Superman, finally. This is what they should have gotten into last year, but just dragged on the high school stuff too long.

Hey Lois and Clark was a good show!

Haha, I liked it to.

But look back at it now, and the in suit parts were still pretty lame. They shouldn't do what they can't do fully and they NEED a movie for Superman. It just can't work well on screen with the budget they have. :\

And uh, why was Clark bleeding? Maybe the rumors I heard were true.

Jor-El TOOK them? Uh ok... I see we are diverging a bit from our Supes history...

I haven't watched smallville in years, but the last 2 minutes was on while I was waiting for CSI. And holy shit was that ending a gigantic X-Files ripoff! The whole scene, right up until
the black oil turned into the dude who played Spike
was right out of that eps of X-Files where Krychek was locked in with that ship.

Now that was a good season premiere. Last season's was kind of lame.

So...

Clark lost his powers.

Clark and Lana are together (but we all know that won't be for along and I think they're going to actually try the Lana/Lex thing later).

Fucking SPIKE.

What did Lex do to/with Chloe? If anything at all?

I've also heard rumors that.. BIG SPOILER..
Lana finds out about Clark this year.

And can someone explain to me what happened when Lana was reading the newspaper? The whole Jason and his mom are dead thing and next to it someone wrote "You owe me", or something.

I hope they bring Pete back for a guest spot this year. It'd be interesting to see him and Chloe interact now. They were going to last year but scheduling conflicts or something.

Oh, and that Depeche Mode song was great.

It said "You owe me, L", aka Lex successfully covered up Lana's murder of Jason's mom.

it was!

but that was just awesome, and for those worried about a deviation from stoyline because it will just go back to normal soon enough.

I don't care what all the snooty "omg they didn't follow this exact thing from the story line what a surprise" people say, this show is awesome. Of course there's going to be deviations. There always is with any sort of show or movie, etc of a book or comic.

Season 4 did kinda hover though.

It's not necessarily a deviation from the storyline thing... Jor-El had no effect over Kal once he came to Earth in the books... it's just the whole temporarily losing our powers bit has been done SO much... on shows... in comics... ugh... it's such a cop out IMO.

Well I think it's dumb when they just lose the powers and get them back.

It'll be interesting if it actually has no powers for a few episodes.

enjoyed the season opener - loved the ending with precious. lana is so hot ;)

seriosuly though why can his dad just take his powers? who decieded this was ok?

The only thing i didnt get was , those 2 people who came out of the ship. It was hella cool when clark push them into that portal and the glass looking thing like in the old superman, but i wish those 2 people would of stayed around longer, i didnt even understand why they was really there.

I hope they come back. :) Overall great show.

Well superman didnt have any powers , but then when something bad happens, he would run to the phone and change, so maybe can switch back and forth now. I think thats what they are aiming at here.

Or i am missing something here

What?

As for the other Kryptonians. Disciples of General Zod sent to get Kal El and take over the earth with his help (watch Superman 2).

how do you people know that metal thing was Brainiac? I think Brainiac's origins must have been changed since I was a kid ... I remember him being a green skinned guy with a computer brain (maybe he was entirely a computer?). I think he must have also been from Krypton? I seem to remember him fighting Superman one on one...well, anyway, any explanation here?

Brainiac was a green-skinned guy pre-Crisis but he wasn't from Krypton (he did have a pet monkey though!).

There are two different "Brainiacs" depending which story pov they're following. There's the green-skinned scientist Brainiac Manabyte was talking about and the robot/computer program Brainiac that escaped Kryptons blast by hiding himself on a departing spaceship.

Well the black "oil" in this ep could pretty much be explained as a whole bunch of nanobots, which is essentially what Brainiac was at some point. Add to that the fact that he stowed away on a Kryptonian ship and yep... Brainiac.

And to finish up this thought in my earlier post:
As for the other Kryptonians. Disciples of General Zod sent to get Kal El and take over the earth with his help (watch Superman 2).
I'm pretty sure I remember Lionel telling Lana that they were disciples of Zod (or the equivalent) as well. Plus one of them definitely asked Clark to join them and create a utopia... so...

But i'm saying, is the Disciples coming back?

I wanna see more of them, hahaa. Thier role in smallville was too short, it was cool how they went out, but i wish they was in the show longer.

Doubt it, not those specific ones at least. Someone would have to free them from the Phantom Zone and Clark is the only one who knows they're in it. Plus he doesn't know what really happened in the first place, not to mention how to get someone out. :lol

There are other disciples though as well as Zod himself obviously.

God, the gal that plays Chloe is so freaking cute.

Anyways, having drifted away from this show many seasons ago, it's nice to have my inner geek get excited by such things as "The rings from the Phantom Zone are the same as the movie! Look, they're in a piece of glass! When will someone KNEEEEEEEEL BEFORE ZOD?"

Someone catch me up though, nothing ever was hot and heavy between Clark and Lois on this show?

We will NEVER:

See the costume
Or the actual Superman Symbol
Or here him refered to as Superman

I can't remember who told me, but apparently these are conditions of the Smallville license.

I think another one was that we'll never see him fly...although there were situations like "Oh that wasn't Clark flying, the twister lifted him up to save Lana from the truck." or "That wasn't Clark, it was his father when he visited earth picking up that one chick in the air."

bah. I just would like to see the symbol at the final episode of the series, and play the familair theme we all know and love. Kinda like when Christopher Reeve was telling Clark about his past...man that part was awesome.

Lois being in Smallville still pisses me off, though. What happend to Pete?

I skipped reading the responces and spoilers in this thread to just veent my outrage at the bull shit that is the local channel that for 3 years has been the local affiliate that brodcasts Smallville from completaly dropping it from there schedual, those fucking basterds! In season 2 they were great, in season 3 when the show shiched to wednesdays, the local channcel (in canada here called CityTV) INSISTED in keeping it tuesdays, so a brand new episode would be on and we had to wait 6 days to watch, and same for season 4. Now they have just droped it all together!! I literaly have no way of seeing it as it airs now!!!! The only way I can is if I had digi cable that has the WB channel. Can anyone point me in the direction of where to dl it?

EDIT: Will reply to this though

Lois in Smallville bugged me at first, but I dont really mind now, and Pete was written out of the show for no damn reason.

~Black Deatha

No damn reason? Try he was worthless. :P

I liked Pete, most fans of the show do. But the writers had absolutely NOTHING they could do with him after the 1st season, so they had him learn Clark's secret at the start of the 2nd. By the end of the 3rd, they just couldn't think of anything entertaining to do with his character and he barely got screentime at all anyway. So they wrote him out.

He was supposed to be in an episode at the end of last season, but there were scheduling conflicts or something. Maybe this year.

And I wouldn't fret people. I'm sure those "rules" about no costume/no flying/etc. will be out the door in the very last episode. But as it stands, they're good rules that they shouldn't screw with.

But yeah, except for ManaByte's bad taste, most people have good things to say about the episode on some forums I've gone to. If this is where they go with the season, it will be terrific.

loved the show. it was a donner superman lover's dream come true. The best thing that could have ever happened to smallville was a) Warner getting things on track with DC properties and b) Singer effectively being given control of the superman franchise. The episode just rocked. about the only thing I Am skeptical about is that they will return to status quo by the third episode. :(

but taken this episode as a whole it gets a solid 10 from me. and to those who say "It isn't faithful to the comics) I have read every ongoing superman issue since crisis (including action comics weekly, the ugly blue suit, and the horrible mullet issues from the 90's) along with most minis etc and I loved this ep.. so faithfulness definitely isn't a requirement for comics fans to love it.

Uh actually that's usually what it is... either for one book or for a few books... they lose their powers...

but like other folks I will chime in to say the usage of Donner's Superman mythos is VERY much appreciated.... I swear I almost creamed my pants when the sound coming from the phantom zone rings/entryway was similar to the sound of the rings in the movie during Zod's trial... looks like I picked the perfect time to jump on board.

EDIT:

Yes, yes only a geek would recognize the sound... whatever FU. ;)

Yeah I was pretty pleased with this episode, especially after the abomination that Season 4 was. There were some good eps here and there in season 4, but overall it was trash. This was a great start, but man, I guess Clark's word is worth nothing. Jor'El's gotta knock some sense into this kid.

As much as I loved the ep, I just can't get over Zod's voice pretending to be Jor-El. I know in my brain that its an actor playing a different part, but while watching the sun go down all I could hear in my head was Zod going, "Why do you fail me like this, when you know I will kill you for it?"

The female Disciple did a good job of reminding me of the chick from Superman II. I wished they had gotten a big dumb looking dude for the other part. I hated that actor on Buffy and I hate him now.

I leave you all with this to ponder -
