Why do people give smartass answers to simple questions? Is it to show how big of a dick they have? Or is it because people are forgetting common courtesy?

It good humor, and can be fun. But your right guys with no skill often come off as dicks. Being witty is a dying art quickly being surpassed by being a dick.

My dad does it rather well although it annoys the life outta me. The scary thing is I've picked it up and I do it as well now

I do it as a defense mechanism. You see in high school I was a late bloomer and didn't start dating til I was a Junior. It affected my self-image and it took a great girl to make me see that there was more to me than what I thought. However since myself image at the time was poor I use to use humor as a way to make myself feel better and attract attention. In addition failed relationships and other life situations over many many years have cause a well of anger and bitterness to grow within me. So whenever I have the opportunity I unleash it on all those who cross my path.

Pretty straightforward.

But seriously I think 50% of the people are just trying to be dry or funny, while the other half really are being asses because they think the question is stupid because they know the answer to it.

But in the end people can be smarmy and short about any question, not just the short ones, its just the inner asshole in people I guess

Like Darien, biting sarcasm is a defense mechanism. Ask me a question for which the answer is obvious to me and no one else, you'll probably get a sincere reply. Ask me a question to which you should know the answer, I'm gonna mess around with you first.

So true, but does hasn't stopped me from watching/reading anything Stephen Fry pumps out of his arse. That man is a legend of wit.

I do it cause I like to. The faster I can think up something smartazzed the better. I have made people who were drinking have it come out of their nose, people choke on what they are eating...etc.

It's all in the delivery.

Plus I am a miserable bastard and want to pass it on to others.

I'm with Tazz on this....especially if the question asked is one that WOULDN'T be asked if the offending party just reserved an extra 2 seconds to think about it for him/her self first. I can't stand when people ask me questions when they can provide their own answers rather easily. Plus I just plain can't stand most people, and smartass replies are less illegal than serial groin-knifery.
