Smash Bros "Very Hard" messages & game awards

Last night, I decided to give another go, and finally earned my last "Very Hard" award in Smash Bros. Melee--"You've beaten Adventure Mode on Very Hard with a Stock of One".

I'd tried and failed or given up on this a few times before. I knew that all you get for it is a message saying that you did it, since I got the messages for the other modes. But it's a little disappointing to just get a message, even still--although far better than nothing.

Anyway, that made me think about another super-difficult accomplishment that I never did--the last playable character in Tekken 1. To get him (Devil Kazuya or Heihachi--can't remember), you have to beat all the Galaga waves with perfect in one go. I can't even do three waves, so I'll never have that character.

So I'm thinking to myself, which is better? It sucks that I can't have that character, but on the other hand, it's nice to get something good for accomplishing something that difficult. I can see where the Smash Bros team is coming from--the game gives you unlockables for doing stuff, but the really tough stuff just gets you a message. I think they wanted to make sure 'average' players could earn all the trophies, stages, characters, etc.

What do you all think? Should there be tangible awards for really tough stuff, or is it better to make sure all the relevant content is achievable by pretty much everybody?

I wish you didn't have to "unlock" so many features in games, or at least make it less of a chore.

Yes it feels rewarding to unlock something, but major features that are only available through unlocking annoy me greatly. Beating a game and earning a new mode seems to be the best unlockable.

I like unlockables if they're reasonably implemented or thoughtfully structured around the game (ala Smash Bros.)

Driving games have a leg up in this regard. The original Gran Turismo had cars available for getting all golds in license tests that you couldn't get any other way, and moreover, they were very useful cars for, say, the Normal Car championship where you couldn't modify your car. In subsequent versions of the game, the license-test cars were no longer unique, so I lost the impetus to get them again until GT4. And that was such a disappointment itself that I never bothered.

All games should have time limits where if you play the game for long enough and clearly just don't have the skills to unlock things, you then have the choice of just unlocking it without doing the task or carrying on trying if you like.

Especially when it's things like characters and stages/levels.

The worst is multiplayer games (like fighters) that require you to play the single-player mode to unlock modes/characters/stages in multiplayer. So you sit there with a bunch of buddies playing the single-player mode so you can really play the multiplayer mode. Idiotic.

Yeah, Smash Bros was the last game I put so much effort in completing everything, though I gave up on getting every award, that was too much. But I still remember doing a backwards roll victory dance when I finally beat Event 51 :lol WHOO!

I heard that if you've played 1 million matches or something in Smash Bros Melee, you'd get a message saying "You've played 1 million matches, now go get a life!" Still can't confirm this, even after all the Smash playing we did in college.

Agreed 1000%

Which is even worse in online games. At least it's a level playing field offline. Having to play a single player mode just to unlock stuff so I can be competitive online is such bullshit. And it's a problem with so many online console games.

The best part of the Super Monkey Ball games are the unlockable mini games. Most, if not all, of them should be unlocked from the getgo.

I couldn't agree more.

The requirements needed to unlock the AX tracks in F-Zero GX is a pain in the ass.

I've put so much time into this game, it's amazing I have time to play everything else. I've beaten Event 51 with every character--without dying with Link, Samus, and Jigglypuff (he doesn't really count, though). I can hardly believe I finally got this last thing.

According to GameFAQs, no, but almost. There are messages when you get to 100, 1,000, 4,995, 10,000, 50,000, and 100,000 matches, it says.

Sorta off topic, but has anyone found a way to unlock those trophies that Nintendo gave to everyone via a special kiosk in Japan, the Samus unmasked one and others?

Jigglypuff doesn't count? Oh then I haven't beaten 51 :lol

The last game i purposely sat down and tried collecting everything was probably Fighters' Megeamix on Saturn. i don't have the time or interest to fellate a game for a 1000 hours to get every morsel it has to offer, SSBM included. Almost every time it off now, which is infrequent, i get a new trophy or character or something.

The hardest thing to do in SSBM was get the Diskkun trophy. My brother and I spent hours alternating trying to get every trophy, but getting some of the stuff for Diskkun (Meteor Survivor and beating the game without getting hit, even on easy) was quite challenging.

The Diskun trophy was pretty challenging, and it was the last and probably hardest thing in the game I completed. Finishing All-Star mode without being hit wasn't too bad if you used DK.

The Mario & Yoshi trophy and the Samus Unmasked trophy were never officially unlocked in the USA, but there were a few different Action Replay codes made to unlock them. Most codes did silly things like give you 255 of ALL the trophies, though... I actually designed a custom code that ONLY added one of each of those trophies (and Tamagon, who was just sort of "zeroed out" in the USA release) -- the problem is the code is very customized and has to be generated seperately for each person, based on their current game stats.

SOMEONE created a "Debug Menu" code for SSBM using an Action Replay -- it supposedly lets you toggle all sorts of stuff, including unlocking those trophies.

Anyway, if you tell me the total # of trophies you have, I might be able to dig up my SSBM code to unlock those three hidden trophies. No promises at the moment, though.

that's how I got them, and you can also play as mater hand, crazy hand and giga bowser with the debug mode

But I already had all 190 trophies before that, me and my friend kept tranfering each other the data until we got all the throphies (but he unloked Diskkun)

I'll never understand how anyone can do this! Near impossible!

Can you tell us how those characters played? Like what was Gigabowser's moves? Was he sort of a clone of normal Bowser?

It's really not that hard. On Very Easy, the CPU hardly ever tries to hit you. For extra safety, you could play as Link or Samus and use their slight extra grab distance to get a little advantage.

Gigabowser plays almost exactly like Bowser, as you'd expect. He has the advantage of being un-grabbable (the bastard!). The wireframes kind of suck. They have only 1 smash move (forward) and no B moves, including no up+B for a third jump. I've never managed to make the Master and Crazy Hands do a damn thing. But I've only messed around with that debug thing for a little while. Got sick of the crashes.

VF4: Evo has the best unlockables and system for them. I wish all games had character customisation, I have my dick in my hands whenever I play Katamari Damacy, VF4: E and Tekken 5 because of this.
