Last night, I decided to give another go, and finally earned my last "Very Hard" award in Smash Bros. Melee--"You've beaten Adventure Mode on Very Hard with a Stock of One".
I'd tried and failed or given up on this a few times before. I knew that all you get for it is a message saying that you did it, since I got the messages for the other modes. But it's a little disappointing to just get a message, even still--although far better than nothing.
Anyway, that made me think about another super-difficult accomplishment that I never did--the last playable character in Tekken 1. To get him (Devil Kazuya or Heihachi--can't remember), you have to beat all the Galaga waves with perfect in one go. I can't even do three waves, so I'll never have that character.
So I'm thinking to myself, which is better? It sucks that I can't have that character, but on the other hand, it's nice to get something good for accomplishing something that difficult. I can see where the Smash Bros team is coming from--the game gives you unlockables for doing stuff, but the really tough stuff just gets you a message. I think they wanted to make sure 'average' players could earn all the trophies, stages, characters, etc.
What do you all think? Should there be tangible awards for really tough stuff, or is it better to make sure all the relevant content is achievable by pretty much everybody?
