Any hopes of this movie growing legs through buzz and word of mouth just went down like a plane full of snakes. :(

Poor snakes. :( Poor Sam. :(

Why the **** do people go in droves to unintentionally shit/cheese action flicks like XXX, Fast & the Furious, Charlies Angels and Mr. & Mrs. Smith but stay away from a clever, tongue-in-cheek one that's 100x as fun? Stupid bastards.

because by the time it came out people were already sick of hearing about it for 4 months. Overexposure's a bitch.

Are you seriously talking about Snakes on a Plane like it was captivating, innovative cinema? It's just as dumb and empty as all of the movies you listed. The only difference is that it's extra dumb on purpose.

"With all the expectations, you have to say we would be disappointed," said David Tuckerman, New Line's president of distribution. "But Snakes on a Plane did what tracking said it would, and it basically performed like a regular horror movie. When it was green-lighted, it didn't have all this hype with it. It was a regular movie that was going to do 35 or 40 million bucks." Tuckerman noted that Snakes was predictably driven by males under 25 years old.

This isn't a bomb - it's performing as expected. Poor, poor New Line (aka TIME WARNER, JACKASSES) and Sam Jackson (who's got more money than you'll ever see) are going to be alright with this one by Christmas (DVD hits in November, I think).

Glass is half full translation: "If it wasn't for internet hype, image how much worse it would have bombed."
This is true.

Actually, I should say that the studio didn't even need to advertise the movie at all. The internet did everything for it. I don't think regular advertising did anything for the film at all.

Yeah... I don't buy the argument that it would've done way better a couple months earlier. I think the studio just overestimated how much the Internet crowd would actually play into the box office take.

I did my part, went to it last night with a group of friends and had a grand time of it. Of course I had a few drinks before hand but I figured that was to be expected. Surpisingly there were about 20 people in the theater for an 11:40 showing on a friday night.

it'll probably make back just under its budget.

its not a "bomb"

you people dont seem to understand what a bomb is. a bomb is catwoman.

a "somewhat disappointment" is SOAP

anyone who thought this movie was going to/was supposed to be some huge hit is a complete idiot. internet hype is NOT indictive of reality. this movie was ALWAYS going to do average in the theaters. it was always going to just have a cult following.

and it will do great on DVD.

This is not average. This is not somewhat disappointing. This is a bomb, it's going to have a hard time even reaching its budget of 35 mill. After this weekend a ****load of theaters are going to drop its ass.

That's exactly what I said, Copernicus. I'm quite surprised so many more people would rather see a serious cheesy action shitfest than a purposely tounge-in-cheek and amusing one.

sorry, but you're wrong. i already said what a bomb is, and this doesn't fit the title. disappointing, yes. but it is NOT a bomb. it's at 24.6 mil and its budget is 33 mil. how is that a bomb?

did you actually expect this movie to make over its budget? if so, you're insane.

i agree with omg rite

most people have know idea what a bomb is, allow me to show some examples again:

The Ant Bully
Poseidon
Lady in the Water
Final Fantasy: Spirits Within
Superman Returns

That makes me sad, because I loved it - most fun I"ve had at the movies in ages.

And I agree - I think for the summer I'd be *much* more inclined to think that Lady in the Water is more of a bomb than SoaP.

:lol Sure!

It was released in 3500+ theaters. It opened to $13.8~ million. Lots of B.O. analysts were giving it upwards of 35 million just for its opening weekend. I guess they were all insane. Personally, I really thought it'd do much better than it did, considering the hypetrain behind it.

p.s. Catwoman made 82 million worldwide, its budget was 85. It's not a bomb according to your own personal definition! :p

edit: Poseidon has grossed over 180 mill worldwide, Superman Returns over 360, and Waterworld over 250. Zomg non-bombas ahoy!

actually no, its budget was 100 million. it bombed in the us. worldwide helped make it less of a bomb. 82 million worldwide made off of a 100 million movie + marketing is a lot worse than what snakes will end up doing vs. its 33 mil budget.

and you saying ANALYSTS were giving it upwards of 35 million just for the opinion weekend.. i already said.. two times in fact, that people who expected it to do that well are idiots. this was absolutely never a mainstream movie. simple fact.

I'm so far from defending Shitwoman, but the budget was 85 according to imdb. BOMBA!

In order for a movie to make money, it needs to make three times it's budget. Do the math and rethink what a "Bomb" is. Snakes is a bomb. But it shouldn't be a surprise to too many people. The name is horrible and doesn't draw in the average movie goer. Plus, all that Internet buzz was great for bloggers and forums like this one, but again, that demographic doesn't equate to the average American who is going out to see a movie.

Oh, and releasing it earlier would have put it up against much bigger, more popular films that would have destroyed it even more. If anything, they should have held it out of the Summer market and released it in late September or early October.

Overexposure? I dont know. I think you only say that because you are in a nerd factory where every bit of pop culture is dissected. Some bits of it ring true to the hearts of nerds and so they idolize it (Sam Raimi, Evil Dead, LOTR) but to the general public its just a blip on the radar.

I dunno, I think most horror flicks that do well at the box office owe their success to a pretty big female contingent. Every time I went to see the Ring and the Grudge, the theater was always packed with teenage/college girls. Women love scary movies, but they need the subject matter to be at least interesting or something they can relate to. And I think it's a pretty safe bet that 99% of the female population hate snakes. Heck, my girlfriend and her mom almost have a nervous breakdown if we're in a pet store and we "accidently" (heh heh) walk down the snake aisle.

So, yeah. I can understand why this one bombed. I'll pick it up on Blu-Ray :)

Snakes on a Plane did not live up to the unrealistic amounts people were expecting based on the internet hype, but it will still make a decent return at the box office.

I'm curious about why people thought the Internet making fun of the movie name and concept behind it would equate to ticket sales. I was always under the impression that only a handful of wacky kids would end up seeing it while the rest would just laugh at the movie on the Internet for how dumb it is.

The market for this movie was limited (18-24 bracket mainly), but I thought it'd do better. I was actually suprised at how some people simple WOULDN'T see the movie. Many friends of mine just thought it was a stupid idea and weren't gonna fork over 12 bucks to see it. Many didn't get the humor in the title, or why the movie would be fun to see. And it's not a chick movie. Not a family movie. Not a true scary movie (like descent). So it's getting lost.

I don't think releasing it sooner would have helped at all. Internet hype meant jack shit. If anything, releasing at holloween may have helped things

Oh wah wah wah. All the negative commentary on the Internet accelerated my desire to see this movie. I just got back from seeing Snakes on a Plane, it's the best movie I've seen all year. Yes, even better than that BOREFEST of a movie that was Pirates 2 (and I liked the first one, so back off!)

I loved every single moment of this movie, and was laughing very hard in the theatre. It's funny, gory, violent, sexy, scary, dramatic, suspenseful, foul, perverted; it rocks. What the **** were you guys expecting, Titanic? It's SNAKES ON A PLANE! These movies are not meant to be taken THAT seriously! It's just for shits and giggles!

Well, technically it IS! It's many things! Most easily marketed as an action movie for sure.

Also, it's doing better than World Trade Center, so at least America, for now, still has some sense when it comes to the box office.

This is an excellent point to be made. XXX was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my entire life.

WTC has been out for a while. WTC's final intake will be about double that of SOAP.

Oh well. I believe they changed the marketing for WTC from more of a mainstream audience to young teens and evangelicals.

Cuz those movies have boobies for the dudes and bad boy rebels for the chicks, and they advertise that shit. Snakes on the Plane's entertainment isn't based on any of that, so there is no drive for most people to see the movie.

Everyone I know that saw Snakes on a Plane liked it too. It sucks.

F*ck man, it was glorious. The crowd I was with wasn't that loud, but they were pretty close.

How people can discourage and talk down upon rowdy movie audiences is completely beyond me...

Um...did you see Snakes on a Plane? It was nothing if not stereotypical trashy entertainment, with boobies and rebels aplenty. The only difference between it and those other movies out there is that it was aware of its own cliches.

I'm kinda disappointed this one did poorly, because it means we won't get to see Snakes on a Plane 2: In Space!
