This is Ryu on my SNES connected via RGB to my 21" CRT.

My Mini SNES is sitting right next to it, connected to my 40" 4K TV.

Image quality is light years ahead on my original SNES.

You'll need another image host. Try imgur or abload.de!

I think this got shared before & there's many reasons against it:

1.) The average person doesn't know that the Raspberry Pi exists...
2.) ....let alone would know how to program it without looking up a guide
3.) The program being written to add games makes it easy to just plug the mini into your computer
4.) You get an official SNES controller & can play it on your TV with ease, almost literal "plug & play"
5.) Really, the average consumer that wants to get this just wants a nice little collection of popular games from their childhood at hand, & save for a few exception, this is a really nice selection of titles.

If you're a huge tech person, sure, I can see the argument, but even for me, I love the idea of a mini SNES where it's so easy to hack it & add games, plus I can play it on my TV with a real SNES controller (well, the closest to being real) compared to, say, playing it on my PC with a different controller, which just doesn't feel right to me.

6) The "official" emulator in the SNES classic is probably leagues better than then 7 year old version of Snes9x running on the pi.

A lot of people talk about convenience, the overall package, etc but honestly the real value to me is the Nintendo-approved emulator.

The SNES mini includes the price of 21 ROMs though, including one thats never been available to purchase.
At some point in the past you would have had to buy those games as cartridges and buy a super magicom or equivalent, or buy those roms at $8 a pop (or possibly more for things like hanabi festival titles) dirct from Nintendo previously.

So..... yeah, the value of the SNES mini isn't purely in BOM terms.

A RPi 3 with a case, SD card, and controller is only $10-20 cheaper (if not same price) than SNES Classic anyway.

U.N. Squadron is now on my SNES Classic and all is right with the world

That was literally one of the games I just added, and it reminded me how disappointing the lack of 2 player on the SNES port is, because it would have been perfect pulling double duty as a 2 player co-op game

I dug my original SNES out of the garage and it still powered on. When I hooked it up to compare to the classic, I was really surprised by how different it looked! The TV blurs the image from the original to stretch it, and I think that is closer to what we experienced with 90s TVs. My wife actually thought the original looks better, and I can see that. In this example, as a kid I imagined Ryu's hair flowing realistically over his headband, now I can see the exact pixels of where it is and is not, I think its actually better to not know, and that is likely how the original artists meant it to be.

Your TV is totally fucking the image if you are plugging an original SNES directly into a modern TV. It is upscaling the image, badly. Plug it into a real CRT and it will not look anywhere near as bad as that picture.

compare against my old ass CRT (my actual childhood CRT I used to play SNES/N64 on [PAL]) running PAL vanilla SF2:

vs a New3DS (non-XL) running NTSC SF2Turbo in "original resolution" mode

edit: I guess I should've refreshed the page to see several people have already posted their version XD

Here is my actual SNES on an actual CRT:

Full disclosure, that is through component out, as my SNES is modded. I was gonna take one of composite out, but the colors on it are totally fucked (I assume 'cause of the component mod). So, it does look a bit better than your standard SNES does. Although, to also be fair, I fucking suck at taking pictures of a CRT screen, so others could make it look even nicer.

This is a Retroarch screenshot with CRT-Royale shader. Looks really close to the actual SNES.

228 x 160 for the boxes.

The preview images can be any size you want, but if you're using hakchi then it will autoscale down your original image to 40 x 29. (The ones that come on the SNES Mini are 40 x 28). You can alter these images in the /snes_games/ folders, though, before syncing.

Thank you! 228x160 seems small, but I suppose when the entire output is 1280x720, that isn't too crazy.

"leagues better" is impossible considering both devices have such similar cpu clock speeds. the only reason the pi runs the 7 year old version is that's the limit of what the cpu can handle.

A) the mods are already happening. Go back a few pages :)

B) as with the NES classic mods, it maintains the UI, save states, etc. it’s as if all these games came on it from retail

It's just like it is now, but with more games. If you have a whole lot you should be able to make folders.

If you WANT to edit the theme from the OS (images, music) you can.

Awesome! Ok read through some of the discussion about the Hakchi. Is there a website for it that has a more compiled FAQ or something? Will this work if I'm operating on a Mac?

Okay guys. If you want to get on this, here is an early pre-release compile that functions fully. (I'm hosting it on my webspace so you don't have to look in shady places or anything, I think I am pretty trusted here. ;) )

Here's a quick rundown.

1) With the SNES Mini attached to your PC via USB, hold reset, turn the Mini on, wait a few seconds, then release reset. The light will not be on.
2) Go to Kernel, Dump Kernel. Install the driver if prompted. DO NOT lose this file, ever.
3) Go to Kernel, Flash Custom Kernel. Your SNES Mini is now haxed.
3a) Not optional, but recommended if you aren't doing too many games. Go to Settings, Pages/Folders Structure and pick Disable.
(In future this will be optional and you can use folders, but a bug in this version means you must turn them off)
4) From now on, simply use the Add Games button, pick your SNES ROM, fill out the details, assign some box art..
5) And when you're done, hit the Sync button bottom right.
6) Now turn the SNES off, wait a moment, then turn it back on without holding reset. The light will come on, your new games will appear.

What doesn't work right now?
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma
Dragon Quest III
Star Ocean
Tales of Phantasia
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Far East Eden of Zero
Great Circus Caper
Top Gear 3000
Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension
Thanks! I got more of my fav games now. 😎

Really hoping that epilepsy protection toggle is ungreyed out. This is the ultimate Contra 3 machine for me. Looks great, plays great, great controllers, but those helio bombs. UGH!

Aside from maybe 5 titles blatantly missing for me this thing is so near perfection. Going to be a pretty simple little mod for me.

So how many games can we fit in before it overlaps with the main menu icons, or lose save state space?

I prefer setting a fixed limit rather than potentially bust things by going overboard.

Image quality is light years ahead on my original SNES. Also note there is no such thing as "scanlines" that the mini snes tries to replicate. There are no visible black lines on old CRTs.

Man I am going on a weekend trip (vacation) So I will not get to jump back into this until Sunday night! I will however be watching this thread like a hawk all weekend :P

This looks amazing. If it would look like that on the classic I would use that more often, even if I prefer the razor sharp native look.

But this shows me even more what a blurry ugly mess the actual filter on it really is.

The first picture has very visible vertical scanlines...

Awesome!!. Is there a list anywhere of 'launch window' games for the PAL release??

Of the top of my head and from memory im thinking...

Super Mario World
F-Zero
Pilotwings
Super R-Type
Super Soccer
Super Tennis
Sim City
Actraiser

I don't follow, what do you mean by this?

I'm only playing that for the first time and while it's rad, I'm not familiar with the example you pointed out. Got any comparisons?

Does anyone know how to get that version of Super Ghouls n Ghosts that had been edited to remove slowdown that I heard about? I'd like to replace the stock version with that if possible.

I'm not sure if I hate Secret of Mana's menus or myself for never ever learing when I should press Up or Down to get to what I want. I always end up scrolling through 'em the longest way possible x.x

Played through the game several times and still do that.

Lol, yeah, as a newcomer as I'm struggling with that as well.

crt royale requires a gpu in the gtx 750ti ballpark though. given the spec there isnt a whole lot more that they could have done. also the device being 720p really limits how good a crt shader can look, just not enough pixels to work with.

From just poking around looking at hakchi just now, it looks like a .NET application. Meaning you may be able to get it running on a non-Windows environment by using Mono.

Big thanks to Robin64 for sharing all the excellent knowledge. I just got my NA SNES Classic, so I think I'll give superhakchi a try this afternoon.

Added some Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2. Needed some hard RPGs.

Only issue I've had with modding this thing is I have no idea how to adjust the boxart at the bottom. They stretch past the screen lol
