So Birth of a Nation clearly wasn't made in the hopes that as many people as possible would see it as soon as possible.

Usually studios buy the whole lot: theatrical, video distribution and streaming rights.

What Netflix did was buying streaming rights outright prior to the film being viewed at the festival and leaving the rest to whomever.

Studios don't like that since a revenue stream is cut-off, there was a piece on Deadline about it.

I have no idea how the industry works but how is this any worse than a competing company buying all the rights for a movie?

Good. Better chances for more getting distribution quicker. Can't say how many times I've read about a promising flick wallowing on the festival circuit for a year plus. It's better this way.

It makes the movie less interesting money wise. If you can only make money of off the theatrical run it cuts a big part of possible revenue.

It's not worse, but it might not be worth it.

I understand that but I don't see how Netflix leaving the theatrical rights is any worse than if they were a traditional company that bought those rights along with streaming.

Birth of a Nation means another awards season of people griping why there's yet another slave movie. ugh.

Everything people are saying about it is that it's fiery and brimming with daring energy and shit. Something tells me it won't have any "holocaust/slavery/prestige" baggage associated with it. Either way I am excited for it and hope it does big numbers.
