So, how the heck does Podcasting work?

Alright, I'm really interested in this whole Podcast thing. Mainly for the possibilities of synching up some NPR to my iPod via the web.

I've poked around Google some, but the way this thing works still evades me. I know a format called XML is involved, and you're supposed to download a program that reads XML files (er, or something). Are some of these programs better than others? How do I get this stuff to my iPod?

Anyone into this? Any advice? Cool shows I should check out?

last time i checked NPR doesn't offer an official podcast stream as that would kill their audible deal. there are ways to get around that though, and it mainly involves using a .wma streamripper and saving the program streams of ATC, Morning Edition, or Talk of the Nation from the website then converting it to whatever format your device reads natively.

oops, forgot to mention. the only NPR show i know off the bat that is podcasted is On The Media, which is great for media criticisms and news recaps. they offer the full show in mp3 format -

Thanks for the heads up on On The Media. It's certainly a good listen, but I wish the other programs would follow suit...
