Blender3D is a piece of shit. Look elsewhere.

free 3d software? Like Maya or 3ds max? :lol I recommend trying Zbrush. You'd love it.

ZBRUSH!!!!!~~!~!~!!!

best bet sp0rksy. Is to go do a search for cg forums and go try the tutorials. (cgtalk is good but very advanced, they tend to ignore newbs).

And

don't knock blender. Its a got introductory 3d package. Even Hash Animation Master got some amateurs in the door, the guy who did killer bean ended up animating Neo in Reloaded.

I've seen some really good work with Blender 3D, but just a really difficult interface. It suffers from Buzz-ism. Aka, lots of features hidden behind a really...unintuitive UI.

Any tool whose interface you have to fight to get work done is shit IMO. Spend your time being creative, not trying to figure out the tool.

Hash is far far better than Blender3D. heck I'd sooner send someone to Milkshape than have them suffer through Blender.

Oh, and Blender's interface is fine, once you learn the hot keys. Really, if you want to invest some time into this, it isn't a problem whatsoever.

All the whining here is pretty silly, especially considering it's a free product. Give it a go, and if you don't like it, don't use it, no harm done.

I'm downloading this maya personal learning edition from alias wavefront's site.

I assume this is probably better for beginners like me?

Closeminded, really.

After taking 30 minutes out of my time to learn Buzz, I simply can't be bothered to use any other software out there. That includes stuff like Reason, Cubase, Fruity Loops, etc. I simply can't have it any other way. I haven't bothered to learn how to use Blender, after several years of knowing of its existence, but that's due to the fact that I just don't have the motivation to do any modelling/3D work whatsoever.

How much does 3ds max cost?
Too much.

I really liked 3ds max. The interface is really nice compared to Blender 3D, but I heard you need to get used to Blender, and then you will be able to create some nice stuff. But I haven't done anything with Blender yet. 3ds max Is really the way to fly, but I had to say goodbye ever since I switched to Linux. Blender is available for Linux, but I dun wanna try because the interface is just weird.

Oh well.

If you want to model only use Wings3d

One of the best modelling apps free or not. If you want to spend a few more bucks get Silo 3d, i believe the price is $100. You can try softimage for free than buy it for 500 bucks.

Hey, if you've got time in your life to waste - knock yourself out. Beginners need tools that are friendly and easily approachable. They shouldn't come from their first session with a tool saying "WTF". If they do - you failed as a UI designer.

ya... what doc said..

for the best Cheapest (legal) modeller without too much hassle is Wings 3D

seen some nice stuff come outta there
wings 3d seems to follow poly subdivision rules fairly well

theres always maya PLE and GMAX as well both have thier stipulations however.

just start practicing TBH... it wont come overnight and a book can show you technique but the proofs in the practice....
CG talk is just as good (if not better) than any book you can buy regarding getting started. HOWEVER... before you start asking question do searches in CG talk and follow W.I.P threads that inspire you. This will cut down the harsh flak one can recive when asking newbie questions.. also coming here (gaming age) and asking a 3d related question can get you a decent reply too...

In the end
Draw Draw and draw more... 1st just understand form and shape ... then do the detail...sculpting a little on the side will bake this type of thought process into you (scuse the pun)

With the initial cube you can try

TAB = Mode vertex
G = grab
E = extrude

play with those controls
