So if Larian isn’t going to make BG4… who should?

It's not going to live up to the expectations no matter who makes it.

But putting that aside, inXile maybe? What are they up to now? Wasteland 4? And would Microsoft throw a ton of money to get the rights?

The Bearded ladys with some help with the narrative from a Dnd writer. They have experience to convert a Pen and paper RPG to a videogame with Mutant: year zero. Just a thought.
I've enjoyed Mutant Year Zero and Miasma Chronicles, but they're both small games. They would need to expand a lot even if they were given a chance to make a Baldur's Gate spinoff instead of a full sequel.

Coming soon:

Most fans don't seem to be positive about this one though. It reminds me of the turn-based option that Pillars 2 received after it released, but you can clearly see that the game was designed around RTwP and the turn-based stuff was only an afterthought. From what I can tell, this BG3 mod is pretty much the same but then the other way around.

Nah, that aint true. Pathfinder W is both and its mechanically the best crpg on the market.

Nobody. BG3 is lightning in a bottle. It had no right to be as all-time GOATly as it is and should just be left alone now.

This. Can you imagine being any studio and finding out you're doing Baldur's Gate 4, knowing if you don't measure up to BG3's quality you're going to get torn apart?

What does Pathfinder have to do with my comment? Cool if that one's designed with both RTwP and turn-based in mind, but Pillars 2 and BG3 weren't designed around another combat system than the ones they shipped with.

A mod wont hurt the game lmao. Its anything but negative. Pillars 2 was overall a turd and its failure had nothing to do with RTwP

Should be called Owlbugs

Would need to wait several years after release for something somewhat stable
Rogue Trader is in a very good shape and it’s been less than a year. BG3 was quite buggy at release as well.

These large games are just going to have bugs at release. But at least Owlcat makes great games. Pathfinder WotR and Rogue Trader are very very good. Heck, I like WotR combat better vs BG3, as there are so many amazing build options.

Honestly, i think the proper studio/team doesnt exist yet. It would be wise to let some time pass. work on finding a team/build a team and slow cook the idea. If BG4 isn't good..it could really hurt the franchise.

Yeah this is about what I was going to post. I don't think you can recapture the magic. I think if another one is made at some point by a different studio they'd be better off trying to do something substantially different.

lol, no one else will make it

BG 3 was lighting a bottle. An "independent" company experienced on the genre with tons of people and no rush to launch the game.

Who fits the description? Bioware under EA? Yeah, right. Look at Dragon Age.

Obsidian? Have you seen Obsidian latest games? Avowed? Under Microsoft? Nah

Owlcat Games is a good one, but they havent made their Divinity Original Sin 2 yet. Going from Pathfinder to something of BG 3's quality and ambition would be too much of a huge leap to take.

Remember that IGN story about BG 3 causing devs to panic? Most devs are under a billionaire company demanding them to deliver an AAAA game in 3 years. Its not gonna happen.

Nobody, i don't see any developer talented enough to do a proper follow up without becoming a joke due to expectations and hype for the IP, Owlcat will murder this IP if they make a 4th installment now, maybe if they made 3rd it would pass but not now.

Some people said CDPR but its not their thing, CDPR is good at cinematics, art direction, characters, dialogue and quests driven by their narrative and atmosphere, this is not a good follow up for BG3, nor its a good follow up for DnD/CRPGs that are gameplay-driven and play like immersive-sims.
No, CDPR should instead focus on their story-driven cinematics projects and IF by any chance they must do something new then they should do Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, that is where they belong and not DnD.

Obsidian has always been about writing and choices, they do well if they get a sequel but to do BG4 justice they need to be given all assets of Larian as otherwise they would simply make another bland game.

The rest suck or don't have enough resources, i dont really care about Wizards of the Coasts and their revenue so best thing is to let it rest, the Baldur's Gate IP deserves respect and should never be given to amateurs.
There is no need for BG4, unnecessary sequels have damaged many franchises.

Whoever is brave enough to add action combat.
Nahh fuck that, the turn-based system is the best thing that they changed, way superior to Realtime with Pause and Action combat is determent to CRPGs, it belong in ARPGs.
Action combat is an obstacle of actual RPG mechanics depth.
Realtime with Pause is this weird middle ground of casualized RTS mechanics and poorly thought-out RPG systems (combat) so this is why its rare to see a RtwP game with good combat.
Action combat like Souls is great but most of the time it works against the RPG and not for it.

Larian invested a lot of funds from DOS2 in it. I don’t see any other dev doing it.

I also don’t understand how Owlcat is able to make those huge games with the sort of budget they do.

But WOTC considers BG franchise as their crown jewel so probably won’t compromise till right partner is met. (Good at crpgs and willingness to invest in big crpg). Seems like a difficult combination to find.

Even a Larian exec was complaining how expensive game dev has become. Despite their strong sales.
