Nice. Is that your Cooper S? I got a Mini One a few weeks ago, Astro Black, pepper pack with chrome mirrors. Not as powerful as a Cooper, but I'm loving it to bits. Hot & Sexy, and a lot of fun to drive too.

Don't be fooled by the looks of it. That baby's freaking fast! Once had one of those blast past me on the highway with over 200 km/h...

If the friggen gas prices keep going the way they are, I may have to get one out of necessity. But really, I always thought they looked cool. I've heard they're pretty fun to drive. They're one of the better up to date re-stylings of a classic in the industry. I'm 6'2" as well, but I've heard that they're actually roomier than you'd think on the inside. Never tried one for myself yet though.

That's one thing that's not a major benefit of the Mini - 28/36 might seem good, but even the base model runs on premium gas.

i'm starting to hear about the interior rattles and qc problems now.. the current motor is solid though. it's anyone's guess whether that'll change when the new engine starts shipping in '07.

I don't like the new Mini Coopers. I've always been in love with the classic model, so when it was time for me to buy my own car I got one for $6500 (IIRC). It's from '91, red paint and the original seats. I love it.

Realiable a Mini Cooper is not. MINI sits last place on JD Power and Associates' realibility chart with Land Rover and KIA.

Might as well buy a compact Kia then. Half the price of a Mini.

Can you explain a little more about these "interior rattles"? Also, what does this "QC" mean? Thanks!

QC = Quality Control. Some of the problems: engines being ruined by floods (usually blocks cracking) of as little as 5 inches, to the tune of $8000 to replace the entire motor. Shifter cables are problematic. Axle seals tend to fail in cold temps. If you live in a mild climate, none of this should be a problem. The rattles are a minor thing, Hondas rattle too...

I was thinking about this car the other day. What are the chances you would survive if you got into an accident with anything larger than a bicycle?

these are based on complaints/unit. most of the mini complaints are cosmetic things

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:
http://www.iihs.org/vehicle_ratings/ce/html/0222.htm

The Mini performs very well in their 40mph offset crash test, however seat and head restraint tests for rear crashes don't score as high.

According to Consumer Reports, the government impact tests (e.g., front, side, rollover) all came back with results of "very good." However, their owner surveys confirm that there are lingering body integrity/hardware issues.

(I still want one, though. :p )

My mom has had one for some time now and never had a single problem. They look great, they're fairly speedy, not that expensive and have a surprising amount of room. I'd love to drive one.

I've never understood why people like this car. I mean, yeah, they're kinda cute, in a VW Beetle-esque way, but they seem like more of a chick car.
totally, dude. now let's go drive our 4x4 F350s to the beach so we can cruise for babes and pat each other on the butt in a very manly, heterosexual way

How's the leg/head room in the Mini's, both new and old? I'm 6'2 with longer legs.

Minis are great cars for tall people. That's a big reason why we got ours. It holds NBA players just fine!

heh, you sound like a guy at my office. He's a big guy, 6'6", and he used to be in the Navy. He was hesitant to get in the Mini, since it looks like it will be cramped from the outside. I finally talked him into getting in the car. After about a minute, he commented "Now I understand why you like these cars." Its roomy interior and fun quirks won him over. I think you would understand too if you drove one. :)

This topic makes me want to buy a Mini Cooper more now...

Do any of you guys have the Xenon headlights? And do they make a big difference visually over the regular halogens?

Our S has the Xenon, and our Cooper has the regular headlights. I do notice the Xenon's brightness on the back peninsula roads that don't have street lights or reflectors, but they don't do too much in the city or on a freeway. I could take or leave them, though it does look cool when they do that auto-leveling thing when you start up. :p

I'm thinking of getting one when we get our new house sorted out. I don't think the mrs. will let me, though. It would be perfect for the streets of Tokyo.
