So it's starting to look like everyone got the 2023 Showcases wrong...

Did "the internet" flub the 2023 Showcases between PlayStation and Xbox?

  • Yes, in the end, we were the "Michael Pachters" all along.

  • Yes, but we only mildly got it wrong.

  • Possibly? Too early to say.

  • No. Fable and The Clockwork Revolution are going to be mint.

The overarching narratives for these two showcases was that Xbox had their best showcase in years, while PlayStation was being run into the ground by Jim Ryan. The histrionics were truly palpable.

Time really brings things into clarity doesn't it?

PS: I use the term "we" here a lot, but that's a form of false humility. I recognized going for yard vs low probability bunts right away. The market digs the long ball.

The Xbox showcase was better on paper.

Starfield and Avowed should have been homeruns. Big swing and miss.

Forza Motorsport seemed promising until I saw it was always-online + the crappy career mode.

I'm still interested in Clockwork Revolution, but with how low-T western dev studios are these days I'm prepared for the worst.

Nothing to add about the Sony lineup other than
Angry Harrison Ford GIF

Not for me...

I rate the showcases independently as an event itself, based on the presentation quality, pacing, etc. The Starfield Direct is to this day one of the best pieces of game marketing ever made. It's almost a short film. I gave the showcase high marks at the time and nothing about my opinion has changed. People retroactively raising or lowering scores is missing the point. Reviewing an event is not the same thing as reviewing a game.

Separately from that, we could discuss the games themselves.
Xbox:
  • Starfield - One of my favorite games of all time. Played probably over 500 hours. I was basically just expecting Fallout in space, and it delivered that for me. Overall exceeded my expectations in art design, scope, exploration enjoyment, and especially OST.
  • Avowed - Game has massively exceeded my expectations. It's really good, still playing it. Probably about 70% complete. The final product vastly exceeds any of the marketing for this game.
  • South of Midnight - Playing this next. Looks really original. Looking forward to it.
  • Flight Sim 2024 - Not really my thing.
  • Forza Motorsport - Really enjoyed it. My first true sim racer, but I thought it was great. Controller handling is better than FH, and I like it more than FH personally.
  • Hellblade II - Masterpiece, absolutely loved it. Niche and divisive game, but I was more than satisfied. Best graphics I've ever seen in a game, and many specific scenes stick in my memory because of masterful cinematography, acting, use of color.
  • Clockwork Revolution - Looks cool.
  • Fable - Looks cool. Hoping the gameplay is more complex than they've shown so far. Looks like your typical Witcher style combat, but they haven't really shown a ton yet. Seems like the setting and comedic approach will be pretty original.

Playstation:

  • Spiderman 2 - Zero interest in this. Didn't play it.
  • Helldivers 2 - It looks good, but I'm not subscribing to PS+ just for this one game. I would have picked it up otherwise. With PS+ it's over $100 to play this for just a year.
  • Concord - I actually thought it looked somewhat good. Was a bit more positive than most on here about it, and it seems I was way, way too charitable. Never imagined it would be erased 2 weeks from release. Legendary bomb the likes of which we have never seen.
  • Marathon - Cool art style. We know literally nothing else about it at this point. If it's f2p I'll try it, but probably not my thing.
  • Fairgames - Doesn't look great.

I know my own taste and I'm pretty happy with my impression at the time. I remember tons of people trying to hype up Spider Man 2 but I just didn't see anything that looked different or impressive so I just followed my own opinion. That usually pays off. It's actually extremely rare that I really am massively mismatched on my prediction and the outcome, and that is solely due to the fact that I ignore almost everyone's opinions on here.

Also the showcase has more than just 1st party content so you're leaving off all the rest of the 3rd party announcements and Gamepass announcements.

Starfield, Hellblade, Forza, Midnight, and Avowed are all good to great games. Don't care for Flight Sim games. Fable and Clockwork look good too. Clockwork is inXile so it is an easy day one buy for me.

Helldivers 2 I own on PC and PS5, it's a good game. The rest of that list, yuck. We'll see about Marathon.

Both those lineups are awful.
Spiderman 2 outsold everything at the Xbox Showcase combined.

Helldivers 2 outsold everything at the Xbox Showcase combined.

Marathon will likely outsell everything at the Xbox Showcase combined.

Concord flopped. Fairgames is a question mark.

I'm not speaking to sales. We all know MS continues to release disappointing games that nobody cares about. Spiderman 2 was a bummer of a game. Helldivers 2 is the only game on the list that I would say justifies being put on the list, if that makes sense. Everything else is meh. MS even flubbed FS2024's release somehow.

Looks to me like both platform holders released good-to-great games, but Xbox released way more of them and Playstation released an absolute stinker for the ages.

Sure looks like initial impressions of these showcases were largely correct to me.

I agree with all th...well not all of that...but if you pay attention to the narrative, it wasn't about that.

The narrative was "I don't like those games" + "Jim Ryan / PlayStation is in trouble because of that showcase."

I notice everyone loves to talk about commercial impact when it comes to the games they love, but like to ignore commercial impact when it comes to games they don't.

Reviews vs impact.

The only people that care about what the 68 "game critics" who get early access think, are people who personally value the games that recieve high scores.

The "PlayStation is in trouble" narrative was everywhere after their May 2023 showing, but it appears the opposite turned out to be true (provided Marathon and Fairgames land).

Everyone remembers Led Zeppelin. Nobody remembers the critics who said Led Zeppelin made bad music.

The only thing this highlights is that the gaming media continue to be a joke and should not be trusted.
Bingo.

Game critics are really just a function of people who synthesize what the masses liked when they were 14, and apply those values to what releases today. They're allergic to understanding real, modern value.

If you think Ocarina of Time is the best game ever (played it when you were 14) then you're constantly looking for that DNA in today's games.

I wanted to play everything on the Xbox showcase instead of Flight Sim 2024 (I didnt think it was enough of an upgrade to 2020 and dont have the specs to run it).....I had a 12400........errrr......I still have a 12400.

I only wanted to play Spider-Man 2 from the Playstation showcase.
I actually thought HellDivers 2 was gonna bomb, was super surprised it was popular......on PC.

Concord
Fairgames
Marathon

I have no interest in.
If Fairgames even comes out ill be shocked.
Marathon isnt actually a remake of Marathon its a whole new game sharing the same name right?

Spider-Man 2 was a 90 game?

I think that PlayStation is in trouble because they are being run by people who are overly focused on the short term, and that includes Jim Ryan. For people focused on short term, immediate sales are everything.

For example, Spiderman 2 sold well but the bad word of mouth and overall vibe of it probably did damage to Insomniac's future capeshit games. Im not nearly as interested in Venom and Spiderman 3 as I was before I played it. I'm just one person but I didn't see a lot of people walking away from SM2 hugely satisfied and excited by what they played. I don't think SM2 did very well on Steam either, which is a whole other kettle of fish.

The fact that during this showcase they had Bluepoint working on God of War gaashit also says that they really don't know what they are doing and what people want. We'll see about Marathon and Fairgame% and like, those games are almost certainly not going to do a Concord, I don't see huge success for either.

I mostly play on Ps5 but I thought the MS showcase was much better, and even now looking at how things turned out I think MS has had a bigger, more varied and more interesting

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As for the general impact, yeah it was never going to make a difference. Playstation is now in a position where they almost don't need exclusives to be successfull.
Though I'll admit I thought Starfield was going to be a bigger hit.

Concord was possibly the biggest disaster in videogame history, eclipsing even Atari's landfill of Pacman and ET carts.

and Spider-Man 2 is a huge pile of shit

it's ironic. gif 🤔

I mean you can't really bring up 'commercial impact' and not put a big-ass spotlight on the game that reportedly sunk $400 million and was the biggest commercial failure in the entire medium since 1982's E.T.

It, alone, has had the biggest commercial impact than all other games in the OP combined and then some.

but Xbox released way more of them
No, they showed more games during their 2023 showcase, doesn't mean they released more games. If you recall, there was pretty much nothing the first half of 2024 besides Hellblade 2 in May.

BesidesSpider-man 2, Helldivers and Concord, there were also FF7 Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin and Astrobot, which were not showcased during their June 2023 presentation.

You are living in GAF bubble and talking about impact.

Have you seen marketing quality/ budgets for Xbox games. Its non existent.

People don't talk about xbox games on forums a lot. They have access to them via gamepass. Come, play, move onto the next one.

For someone who is heavily into GAAS titles, I expect you to take something like engagement seriously.

Helldivers 2 covered those losses already and is a mainstay on PlayStations top selling games every month in 2025. When you go for the long ball, you strike out from time to time. It's the nature of ambition.

Concord was the biggest flop in industry history, but do we really think Xboxs wet fart games made money?

What an odd thing to say, why would a game that released half a year earlier need to cover the gargantuan losses of a later release?

Helldiver 2 isn't responsible for making up the sunk cost for the game and studio closure. You can look at it this way that all the good will HD2 created about Sony's live service push was wiped away in a single week and now folks on GAF and other places look at all future GaaS games from them with a lot more skepticism. It created a lasting legacy for the worse.

Who can say, Starfield was in the top 10 selling games of the year and also reportedly drove up the highest amount of GP subscriptions when it launched.

I do agree with you that none of those games had the sheer commercial impact of Concord tho.

How do you not know the difference between the reception to a Showcase (basically entertainment and hype value) and game sales/reviews?

Is anyone out there arguing that the E3 2015 Sony press conference wasn't spectacular, just because Shenmue 3 was shite and sold poorly and The Last Guardian didn't hit criticaland commercial expectations?

This is a crazy goalpost move. No one is suggesting Arrowhead Studios is responsible for making up Concords losses. We're simply reevaluating the impact of the 2023 showcases in their entirety.

PlayStation had needle movers.
Xbox didn't.

The market is fascinated by the Helldivers franchise today. That's the result of Helldivers 2 being a massive needle moving game. We're getting a Helldivers movie and Helldivers 3 will likely be a massive reveal in the next few years.

Starfield wasn't a flop. It did well. Did it live up to expectations? Did it spawn a movie franchise? Did it put Bethesda trending in the right direction? No.

Your last comment is bogus. The "narrative" around PlayStations GAAS push is the same as its ever been. All Concord did was give anti GAAS fanboys ammunition in their narrative wars.

...or Spiderman 2, or Helldivers 2, or (likely Marathon).

And let's face it, from a gamers perspective, South of Midnight is just as big of a flop as Concord. No one played either game. Two wet farts that smell identical to the public.

It's probably also worth noting that Christopher Dring called Colin Moriarties Concord budget story "a laughingstock in the industry".

Christopher Dring is a journalist.
Colin Moriarty is not.

Please point to a mirror, not to me, when you talk about moving goalposts.

A movie franchise? come on now, lol.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Are you saying that the 'narrative' has always been negative and that Concord just provided more ammo? Or are you saying that the 'narrative' has and always was positive?

If you think it's the latter, there have been enough polls on this forum to know that you are the extreme outlier in that line of thinking.

And let's face it, from a gamers perspective, South of Midnight is just as big of a flop as Concord. No one played either game. Two wet farts that smell identical to the public.

Not even close, but you know that already.

- SoM didn't cost a reported $400 million.
- SoM didn't get taken off of the shelves and all digital storefronts in a week
- SoM hasn't led to the studio being immediately closed (so far)
- Despite being on Game Pass on multiple platforms, SoM did more than double Concord on SteamDB.

You're missing my point.

It went from "PlayStation had a terrible showcase...Jim Ryan will be fired." (with an elongated 6 month farewell tour...with parties and cookies with his face printed on them)

to

"Well, just because the market ultimately loved PlayStations showcase, doesn't mean the show was good."

People are desperately trying to ignore the fact that they tied business outcomes to their evaluation in 2023, but don't want to do that upon rereview."

Michael Pachter gets way too much hate. So many people whiff as badly as he does but never bring it up.

Only interested in Fable being developed by Playground Games. Fable has always had potential that was never fully reached so with a studio that has produced nothing but hits behind it, it is definitely highly anticipated. There is too much disappointment with mid games from both sides otherwise.

In hindsight Sony had an even more embarrassing showing than it seemed at the time, we did indeed not understand how badly they'd messed up.

What silly arguments are you peddling here, man?

Because a game did well commercially later means that people can't have criticized its original showing, or the stream it was originally broadcasted in?

If that's your argument then people should stand up to attention, full-mast, every time a Call of Duty game is shown in a stream and better not ever complain about it. Because it's inevitably going to do great business.

Reflect upon the argument you're making and realize how bad it is, please.

The anti GAAS narrative has remained the same. People have just collected ammunition along the way.

If you ask 1,000 gamers about Concord and South of Midnight, 999 of them will say the same thing. "I've never heard of either."

To gamers (not the finance people behind the scenes) they are both irrelevant. So while Concord was the bigger financial flop, gamers don't know, or care about that.

My point with this thread is that the PlayStation 2023 showcase had 2 needle movers (Spiderman 2 and Helldivers 2) and likely another hit with Marathon and Fairgames (I could be wrong there)

The Xbox Showcase had 0 needle movers. Starfield didn't hit like Spiderman or Helldivers and the rest of their output is Clockwork Revolution (You can smell that fart from a mile away) and Fable (could be big).

Like what you want to like...but PlayStation went for big swings and it looks like the right strategy in retrospect. It's just funny how no one considered the big swing strategy may be the correct one.

True statement.

Which part, that HD2 needed to cover the losses, or that you're the one who moved the goalpost?

The anti GAAS narrative has remained the same. People have just collected ammunition along the way.

Ok, to the point I was making earlier. HD2's success went some ways to pivot it towards being somewhat tolerable but that sure as shit isn't he case anymore.

If you ask 1,000 gamers about Concord and South of Midnight, 999 of them will say the same thing. "I've never heard of either."

To gamers (not the finance people behind the scenes) they are both irrelevant. So while Concord was the bigger financial flop, gamers don't know, or care about that.

You're on an enthusiast gaming forum saying gamers don't care about it, there have been so many discussions on Concord since before it came out and after it went the way of the dodo. "Gamers" care, but "gamers" are also a wide and varied sect. Of course 'gamers' won't care if your sampled gamers are your average candy crush players. But gamers who invest in, and look forward to, games from platform holders, it would be a different matter.

My point with this thread is that the PlayStation 2023 showcase had 2 needle movers (Spiderman 2 and Helldivers 2) and likely another hit with Marathon and Fairgames (I could be wrong there)

Ok.

Still don't understand how that reflects upon the showcases themselves. People's opinions on the showcase are from the time they saw the showcase, you don't make a retrospective opinion on a showcase after Q4 financials.
