What the hell, I'm having major deja vu here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1330016&highlight=

I saw this one popping up on Netflix and gave it a go. I think we can all agree that Jurassic Park is a classic, and that Lost World and part three were...not nearly as good.

Therefore, just like whit Star Trek Beyond, I went in sceptical and again was pleasantly surprised. There is some really solid action here and it all looks amazing.
The main premise was pretty realistic and dumb at the same time. The fact that people might get bored of dino's after a while was something I could kind of accept, just like that they would breed a new kind of beast. However if you see that Mososaurus jump out it's hard to think anyone would ever get bored there. But it was good enough for me.
The whole training the Raptors thing worked much better then I feared. Chris Pratt gives a solid performance here and the Raptors look very realistic. Most of the time I forgot they were CG. I was also pleased with the fact that this little story saves their lives later on, and the fact that I started to feel sympathy for these killing machines was pretty great.

Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire was ok, but she looked a bit...plastic? I don't know, it got better later on but in the beginning she looked a bit CG, like the dinosaurs. The kids were just there for...well the kids that go and see the movie. No depth here and they lacked the charm of the original duo.

But where it all counts is the dinosaur action obviously and it was fantastic. Great and intense action whenever these beasts were on the screen, very believable. The final showdown with T-Rex was magnificent. I was on the edge of my seat during the whole final act, great stuff. And thank god they redeemed T-Rex after what they did to him in part three :-(

Storywise it sometimes felt flat on it's face though. I can't believe they wouldn't have a weapon to instantly disable that new dinosaur, they made it! The whole 'our parents are getting divorced' was never follow up on, completely unnecessary. The romance between Claire and Owen also felt dumb, served no purpose. The first movie was referenced a bit to much I think.

There was also a very goofy scene in this movie. When that raptor, blue, comes to the rescue you see him sprinting towards them and it looks soooo stupid. Like a scene from Lassie, coming to the rescue!

Overall not a good movie, but very enjoyable! Your thoughts?

I honestly think it's a pretty good Jurassic Park movie until the I-Rex gets loose. After that it quickly devolves into a really stupid monster movie.

EDIT: To elaborate on what I mean by a stupid monster movie. I just mean that things happen that either make no sense or contradict logic from earlier in the movie. For example, they stress how the I-Rex grew up in isolation and would be a danger to the other dinosaurs if it escaped - so how does it know how to communicate with raptors if it's never even met a raptor before? Or when it goes into the pteranodon cage and scares out all of those dinosaurs, the dinosaurs all conveniently flock down to the one place where all of the humans are for no reason besides creating a set piece for the movie. Also, why are the humans still in the park not back at their hotel rooms where it would be safer and are instead all standing around in the open when they know there's a situation happening?

I had a lot of fun with this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although I found the beginning to be a bit slow. Unsurprisingly many on this forum hate it.

Man everyone loved the final showdown yet I found it pretty stupid. Sure it looked good but it seemed like it was straight taken from a Godzilla movie, more than dinosaurs.

I found the movie fun enough, but kinda stupid. The super dino was pretty lame IMO. He was super strong, inteligent, invisible, can lead raptors... what else? it felt so unfitting for a JP movie.

Also it seems to ignore the theme of JP1 about how you shouldn't make a theme park of dinosaurs, seeing how in JW it's up and working fine until they want to go bigger with the I-Rex.

Meh I think it was really good. I look forward to the second one even more. I highly disagree with how much shit people give the movie.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
It was an ok way to kill 2 hours but fairly forgettable all things considered.

I thought it was a thoroughly mediocre film with very little heart (SAMSUNG INNOVATION CENTRE, HELLO IM JIMMY FALLON) & worse gender representation than the original films and books which came out decades before it. This deleted scene where Claire suggestively smears actual dinosaur shit along her legs while Chris Pratt watches says literally everything you need to know about what they were thinking while making this.

For further reading on why it was so terribly regressive, here and here.

I've never walked into a cinema so hyped and come out so disappointed. I remember Joss Whedon called the film out based on an early clip and everyone (including myself) just went "lol joss whedon telling others how to write women trololol". Sorry joss, you were right!

When the Velociraptor and the trex jumped on top of each other to fight the other dinosaur my friend and I were having an uncontrollable fit of laughter.

Also when Chris Pratt looks at the Velociraptor as its leaving and the dinosaur turns around to look at him and you swear he's going to give a thumbs up or some shit.

Oh? You mean that woman that got dropped in the water by those flying dino's? What about it. It was a bit silly maybe...

There's a lot of talk about that character's death being excessively brutal when you factor in that she wasn't even really an antagonist what so ever.

Many have written about why it was so cruel and so extra in a way that it stopped being fun, and became quite disturbing.

Very few people in the Jurassic Park series get these kind of deaths, and when they do it is when they have done something awful (the guy that gets eaten alive by the tiny dinos, Ned who gets acid in the face then dies, etc).

I guess the guard from jp2 gets an unnnecessarily cruel death but it is still over in moments, unlike Zara's.

She had a brutal death befitting of a villian, even though all she was doing was trying to look after some disobedient kids who were running amok due to their parents' neglect.

Don't forget, she is supposed to be a secretary who... gets punished for being on her phone all the time because her boss is too busy to look after her own nephews.

That first Jurassic park was legit. You know, I have a lot of respect for it. They didn't need these genetic hybrids. They just needed dinosaurs, real dinosaurs!

I'm sorry do you want the dinosaurs to invite her over for coffee and get to know her before they decide whether they can kill her brutally like a dinosaur would?

I totes forgot the dinosaurs are real and this entire thing wasn't scripted and they didn't spend many many hours making that death in CG over a tiny nothing character who was "annoying" for doing her job.

This is a series where characters die regularly, we all know it. Zara's death is different to other deaths in the series, as is discussed at length in that link I posted. The only thing that comes close is the guard in the jeep in Jurassic Park 2 that gets bitten in half by two T. Rex's, and that is over in A fraction of the time of Zara's death.

In the other movies they didn't have a guy running away from dinosaurs with a Margarita in each hand or like I mentioned a Velociraptor and a trex forming mecha shiva yo fight a bigger dinosaur. Seems to me they wanted to have fun with certain elements. Including her death, regardless if she wasn't a Nazi who was pointing a gun at a puppy.

I was surprised by the death but immediately forgot it when the shit got ridiculously (and hilariously) corny in the final battle.

The woman's death was the best bit of the film. Over-the-top but fun as hell. Stupid 'controversy'.

The series needs more of that. This is a film series which started with a guy getting eaten whilst taking a shit next to a T-Rex enclosure.

It wasn't fun tho, you just acknowledged yourself it was "surprising". Many felt it was too much, especially when the ACTUAL villain in the film dies in a much shorter sequence and off camera (you only see the dino's body).

How was it fun? Do you enjoy watching innocent people get carried off by dinosaurs, while screaming, thrown into a lake, almost drowning while still screaming and then finally getting eaten alive?

The series absolutely does not need more unnecessary cruelty. The Jurassic Park films are not supposed to be cruel, and they managed to mostly avoid it until 2015.

.. yes?

I don't watch dinosaur films to learn about them, I want to watch them destroy human civilisation and kill people.

It's no more "cruel" than the scene in the first where the man was blinded, desperately tried to get his car unstuck, then attacked. Or the bloke who was eaten alive by dozens of the small dinosaurs in Lost World, etc etc.

I don't need morality in the death of characters in a Jurassic Park film. Good people and bad people can die. As long as the dinosaurs look real and it's done in a fun/interesting way, I'm good.

let's not pretend that the dinosaurs were arbiters of morality, smiting with righteous indemnation anyone that did not ethically appease them

the T-Rex killed a lawyer who was just a bit of a scaredy cat in the first film, and also ate someone's dog in the second

I just said I don't care if it happens to good or bad characters?

If I want to ponder the morality of characters I'll watch a Krzysztof Kieślowski film.

I want to see dinosaurs kill people and cause mayhem in a JP film.
Okay, but thankfully not everyone is like you and wants to see weird torture porn of minor characters.

Within the language of Jurassic park (which is death), Zara gets arguably the most horrific death in the entire series and she is a nothing side character. Her death gets more screen time and is more elaborate than the film's actual villain. It's a dumb concept.

The point is that saying the dinosaurs should discriminate when it's a villain vs a good person and have their death accordingly be more or less brutal is silly.

The death was surprising but I can't think of many who were up in arms on it. When I said I was surprised it just meant I looked at my friend with a "Jesus christ what the fuck" and we giggled awkwardly because yes it was fairly brutal and I wasnt expecting it. It doesn't mean it was unwelcome. If anything it reminds me these are savage fucking creatures and not just monsters you can ride a motorcycle along with as Chris Pratt.

I didn't lose sleep over it.

re: woman's death.

there's an unwritten rule in horror movies that the scale and length of death should be proportionate to the character's deeds . sidenote characters don't get much, villians should be taken out like they're the villain.

hence why almost everyone was like "wat" at her death being a dragged out torture sequence. I'm actually sure you can fit almost every single previous JP movie death scene into the time her death takes from start to finish.

it wasn't clever, a subversion, or anything. it was bad editing and directing.

Read this link, it's not about dinosaur morality, we know dinosaurs are going to eat people. It's a Jurassic Park film. It is about who it happens to, why it happens to them, and how long it is in the context of the rest of the movie.
What about the dude who got ripped in half by two T-Rex while trying to save the protagonists in The Lost World?
I already mentioned that in this thread as the only death that is even comparable. Thankfully it is far shorter than Zara's.

Yeah I liked it. Best Jurassic Movie after the original. It was dumb, easy watching, silly fun.

I enjoyed X-men Apocalypse this year for similar reasons, and even Independence Day to an extent even.

Edit. In fact, screw being moderate, i'm going to double down, it was better than Rogue One.

It was super fun. Loved the death of the lady. I don't see why it being "underserved" matters. At all.

It's dinosaurs are going mayhem. They're not going to stop and consider the morals of each person they're killing lol.

I really hate it. It's just so dumb. I adore the original and how well thought out it is, compared to World which is pure schlock.

I'm sorry do you want the dinosaurs to invite her over for coffee and get to know her before they decide whether they can kill her brutally like a dinosaur would?

Natural order/karma is a theme of the series.

The fact it surprises the viewer only makes it better. I'm all for subverting expectations.

Subverting things for the sake of subversion is stupid and adds nothing to the concept and themes of the movie.

It's such a weird death she barely in the movie and does nothing then suddenly get this long death scene and i'm sitting confused on what i am supposed to feel. If the villain got the death it wouldn't be surprising because at least he made an impression but her death was so weird.

An irredeemable and offensive massive piece of crap bigger than the one in that disgusting, misogynistic deleted scene.

I absolutely hate this CGI bloated garbage and everything that has to do with it. The only way the second one could be bearable is if they killed every main character within the first 10 minutes of the movie so they can be replaced with actual characters. Chris Pratt's witty machoman alpha dumbass needs to die in a more gruesome and gratuitous way than that nanny with 3 minutes of screentime.

Jurassic Park three is immensely better than this abomination. And to think this hack is going to direct the last movie of the Star Wars trilogy. Haha good luck SW fans.

I don't really feel like having a chat with an article though, thanks for your input

anyway, it is basically saying "I don't think that death was earned" and I'm saying, so what? (it actually does imply that the dinosaurs are arbiters of morality btw)

the idea that this film doesn't follow some unwritten, arbitrary rules that the author has invented about someone's death is not even up there as a problem to me

they needed to show that the dinosaurs were ferocious and they did it, just because they didn't use it for some higher-power story arc is the writer's issue and not the film's

Again, it's a Hollywood blockbuster about dinosaurs, I'm not sure why you're so hung up on the 'concept' and 'themes' like a first year film student.

(says the poster with a degree in film studies which is worth less than the paper it's printed on in the real world, sick burn on myself)

But yes it does actually add something to the film: surprise and shock, which is what a good dinosaur (and horror-lite) film should have.
