So much trolling lately in game-related posts...

Now, I know everyone loves to argue, and N-bots, X-Bots, and Sony fanboys love to chime in on threads setup to discuss a competing system, but lately it seems to me that EVERY SINGLE game-related thread I've read quickly takes a turn for the worse when someone chimes in with "that would be better on DS" or "that would be better on PSP" or "that would be better on the PS2" ... which rapidly transforms the thread into a pissing match.

Shouldn't GA have some sort of rule against obvious trolling in game-related threads? I mean, how is discussion served by those sorts of comments? What is the point, except to derail people from talking about the game in question?

Belfast made a post for EXIT on PSP and right off someone says "that should be on DS," so everyone takes the bait and begins to argue in defense of the analog nub against the DS's stylus input. Thread derailed.

"That should be on DS" -- Sorry, it isn't. It's on PSP. People want to talk about the game, not about the system it isn't on.

It seems more common in PSP threads, but I've seen PSP fanboys attack DS game threads and Xbots do the same in PS2 threads too.

We all know Drinky and MAF like to troll for trolling's sake, but they tend to setup their own threads and make it obvious. A lot of posters lately are just doing it to stir up the pot, and it's really giving GAF a "SomethingAwful"-ish atmosphere.

Am I the only one bothered by this? Am I the only one that thinks that kind of trolling should only be allowed in system/hardware-specific threads and threads setup specifically to troll and argue?

"Please port it to 360"

is the bane of *all* PC threads lately, and I have to see a single "Please port it to PC" in a 360 thread yet.

I'm more bothered by the fact that this is in gaming, and not in OT, which is where all the community stuff should go. But you are fighting a good fight, so I'll let this slide!

There's also "PC gaming is dead" and "All the best games are on consoles... except MMOs. And RTSs" and then there's the whole argument about what platform FPSs are better on.

The solution is very simple. You want it to stop? Ban the trolls.

Of course that will never happen, we all know the only way to get banned is to make fun of proffesional wrestling.

I expected this thread was created because of the Exit thread. :p It is pretty true, though, and I think it revolves almost entirely around PSP threads. Nearly every single PSP thread always has to have the obligatory "why isn't it on DS? :(" or "it would play better on DS!" bullshit, which subsequently devolves the thread into yet another PSP vs DS thread.

Blame the DS. :p

Aw come on! When Capcom tries their upmost best to do that you ask them why they bother! :lol

(I know that's not what you mean but it's still funny!)

Options ->

Immediately ban ANY mention of the competition in threads not related in any way to them (Exit thread is an example of this)
Ignore it, let it foster... it's the GAF way
Ban discriminately, to lay down suitable warnings to discourage other asshats.
Ban based on personal agenda!

Now I want a bad-ass fedora and red scarf so I can be all rescuing people from burning buildings like Mr. ESC.

Fucking awesome game!

Join me bretheren! Sell your DS and buy 3 copies!

I don't see any bait there :p

I blame the influx of newbs.

Its not that they are dumb its that they have their own ideas and general experiences.

Theres a way of thinking on GAF that most posters seem to fall into after a few months of posting their own agendas and getting nowhere.

Kinda like government except they discuss policy and we discuss games and internet fads...and elected officials all get paid, only 1 in 5 GAF members get paid to post here.

i'm sorry, you cannot blame this on newbs. This shit was annoying waaaaay back when we first got our taste of DS/PSP, and when first trickling info of 360/PS3 came.

It just has to do with the transition.

*whistles*

Anyway if you're actually looking for opinions Amir0x then I'd vote option 3. Make an example of the more vocal trolls to stem the tide a bit.

It is getting pretty annoying. :/

Keep up the fight, guys! The lack of being able to see any other view but the poster's own is my main gripe.

BTW Amir0x..why is your av of a dog getting a laser beam shot into its butt?
Curiosity, not trying to troll your av.

Perhaps the ones that never seem to get banned, no matter what they do? Know anyone like that? I have often seen them.

The recently recruited (???) mod - Vennt - is doing a good job with the bannings so far.

He's an admin, and he was one before too but he left and came back recently.

:D

It's of the Mother 3 characters getting beamed off by Ness and then Ness and his dog coming to take their rightful place!

He gets banned. Quite a bit actually. Sure he gets away with a lot more than most posters but hey them's the breaks kid.

I'd be more worried about how happy Ness seems to be after the unfortunate laser beam incident in question. :lol

Unfortunate incident? Ness did it on purpose! He was pissed that he wasn't getting a new game.

Anyway, I'm still working on the full avatar. The final one is gonna have the other Mother 3 pics and the characters getting replaced by Poo, Paula and Jeff one by one.

Well hes like 'mwahaha that dog got a laser beam in the butt' then runs like hell outta there.

I dont know about having it as a general rule, but definitely ban the douche that brought the DS into that thread purely because he said "it'd be better on DS" without explaining his comment.

Totally ruined that thread.

While I agree that the pointless bickering is getting to be a bit much, how can you institute a global ban like the one proposed? There could be some very legitimate times for someone to mention "That should (also) be on the ____" -- granted, if they had a brain, they'd bother to EXPLAIN what the reason was, but some posts can come out of earnest desire for true discussion.

(I need to end this post with something ironic.)

I generally agree with you (that too much trolling occurs from all sides) but that the Mr. Esc thread Belfast created was derailed was purely his own fault for baiting with comments like:

"Mr. ESC has rescued me from the portable ghetto!"

"Join me bretheren! Sell your DS and buy 3 copies!"

I think its in the wording, saying "This game would be better on DS", is different than "I wish this game was on DS" or "PLEASE PORT TO 360" or "After playing this game i think it would be better on ds because they could make use of the *blah blah*"

And if people cant be bothered to word their replies in a manner that doesnt incite a mass argument then they deserve a ban (imo).

Yeah, I know... I took the chance considering that the "problem" is happening solely in the Gaming forum (which more people read anyway).

I like both of these options...

Presumably, mods have working brains capable of rational thought. Let them ban based on whether or not they feel the comment was made as a sincere call for further discussion, as opposed to an obvious troll. Likewise, people that post presumably have working brains too and should know better not to post "DS Rules, PSP Sucks" type posts in game-related threads.

And looking back, I do see that Belfast kind of encouraged the trolling. Bad Belfast! Bad, bad Belfast! Perhaps there ought to be a penalty for encouraging trolling too *grin*

Honestly, I just hate how GAF seems to be edging closer and closer to troll city. Oh, there have always been trolls here, and all sorts of wackiness, but the frequency seems to really have ratcheted up in the past 6-9 months or so. My God, do we need all of these PSP Vs DS, PS2 Vs Xbox, PS3 Vs 360, PS2 Vs GameCube, etc., etc. comments in game-specific threads?!

Am I the only one that honestly LOVES his PSP and his DS and his PS2 and his GameCube (and so on) for all of the various exclusives and strengths each system offers?!

I don't see there being any possible way to limit the trolling any more than the mods do, and I think they are doing a fine job. It is just inevitable that it is going to happen. That is the horror of the internet.

Personally I didn't even really see a problem with the comment in the Exit comment. The person who made the comment had a legitimate opinion and seemed pretty calm and collective about the discussion. It seemed more like he was the one getting attacked for stating his opinion.

Oh you gotta keep Drinky and MAF around. It's just more fun that way =)
Anyone who actually takes to heart anything that some silly troll says should just go play a good game for a few minutes and forget about it. Really sometimes when drinky trolls a DS thread, I pop open kirby and play for a few minutes then laugh at his post. <shrug>

nuh uh, i blaim the xbots for this not the trolls. This thread should have been ported to the pc and the graphics look better on the gamecube anyway.

Fanboyism is just something that won't go, sadly, some feel the need to jusitfy why they own a single system or maybe two, might stem from insecurity sometimes. For example, any great news related to something they don't own or don't plan to own, turns them into defensive mode, from there it gets worse and worse.

From what I've seen though, the mods have been doing a nice job... heck, go to IGN boards and you'd appreciate this place even more. :lol

A lot of people on this board can not comprehend constructive criticism and get very defensive if you pose a differing opinion or perspective on a news story.

AGREED.

Yeah, but he didn't say that in a DS thread. So what does it matter?

Keep fanboyism to their respective threads (DS/PSP/Sales Threads)

Well, that's exactly what Belfast didn't do. PSP/DS hardware threads are generally going to go to shit in handheld war rhetoric. That's a given and pretty much unavoidable. My specific pet peeve is bringing it into game specific threads. There should absolutely be no reason bring up or talk about the other handheld. Maybe if you have a legit reason why it may be better on one or the other but more often then not thats just used as an opening to troll worse and ruin a thread. In those cases you should be able to just make a thread on your reasoning and have that thread shit on.

That's why I don't really mind and find MAF and Drinkys trolling kind of funny. They usually (I said usually, not always mind you) don't shit all over a DS game specific thread. And if Drinky does he usually has some point to back it up if you actually discuss with it him. More substance then just "DS sucks". Yes they will make similar comments like that, but they usually make specific threads for that and keep the shit isolated. And the ensuing flame baited Nintendo fans are hilarious to watch.

He made a thread with the intention to bait DS fanboys, peroid. If the thread had been titled "Exit discussion thread" or something similar, the odds of a flame war would have been much smaller!

The idea is that comments like those openly invite that sort of discussion...

also: Vennt is a mod/admin again?

Yeah, it's simply a lack of respect for others opinions. It's pretty pathetic.

Deliberately trolling though and being an ass on purpose is fucking stupid IMO though. One can be civil and not be a dick. It is possible.
