GAF is pretty much my only board (though I go to a nice civil one that is just people who play on Live), but I've been to SA's game threads and though they are very members-only there they wouldn't allow the general nastiness that flies through almost every GAF thread.
This place has its own personality, some great posters and easily the best game information, but it's not very civil. It's not as stupid as gamefaqs or ign, but it's just as filled with fanboys. Every once in awhile in the time I've been here there's a housecleaning, the tone improves and then it slips back. Usually when you start seeing threads like this there is a much needed banstick loosening. Hopefully Vennt will continue his crusade.

Seriously, SA is alot more anal about trolls than GAF, but SA has the whole "report this post" thing, the probation list,an assload of mods, etc. I like GAF because its kind of the FYAD of SA's Games, without going too crazy. GAF has the perfect blend of instant news, lots of conversation (even when there isn't anything to talk about) and hilarious fanboy banter. Plus, you don't have to pay to change your avatar like you do at SA.Musashi Wins! said:
I think that joke characters, while always entertaining to a mature audience, unfortunately tend to set the tone for other conversations. It is more a problem with the reader than with the poster, but still..
You see threads over threads where people with the "banned" tag stir up a lot or a little controversy (when they should really only be saluted with a fat laugh), which helps polarize opinions.

*coughs* I think what GAF needs is a "newbie" only board for the first 100 posts where the mods can watch the "fresh meat" talk about gaming related material, and then releash the spawning samon into the wild. (ie GAF and OT).
Either way it might be a better control on the trolls.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this thread, I've noticed the same thing (and mentioned it in a few threads) and I'm glad it's being addressed. Ideally the admins would treat a history of rabid fanboyism the same way they treat the word "faggot", it's really the only way to curb this trend.
I also want to say that I feel the comparison to SA in the original post is very unfounded and inaccurate. SA is definitely more... what's the word I'm looking for... cynical I guess, but the community is great, generally well-behaved/mature, and there's no better place to actually discuss gameplay.

Well, that was the motivation behind removing the junior member's ability to make threads. Bad as it may seem now, just remember that it's been worse. With everything in a state of transition though, new hardware recently released, new hardware on the way without a lot of concrete details, a lot of this is to be expected.
