The problem with giving a GotS award to a non-playable title, even if it's only being demoed in real time, but still not playable...is that it steals a spot for another, more deserving title to have that award, where it was playable and, in most cases, coming out a lot sooner than any of the titles that win GotS awards yet come out a year or two later. It basically cripples the point of naming it GAME of the show.

Yah but if that non playable game is the one that gets you most excited, why shouldn't it get GoTS? Isn't that what the award is for? The game you think will be the best when its released? So is that playable game really more deserving, if you think that non playable game is going to be better?

Exactly... but you have nothing to go on from a movie. It's like saying an album is great based on its sleeve, or a movie is great based on its poster. You can rate a game in terms of graphics, but at the end of the day the gameplay is what we are all playing games for, and you can't really gauge that from a movie, especially if it's a movie that features no actual gameplay.

So, what are you saying? The wording in the award's name is clear. Games need to be played to be understood. Should we separate the awards into movie and game of the show categories? Getting hyped is really cool...no doubt about that. Picking out the most popular shown title is easy...but there should be more clarity in the award's name. A non-playable demo or movie of a game, no matter how impressive, should be treated as a movie and not a game.

*shrug* well, I said it in a joking manner, but whatever. No harm, no foul. :)

I'm looking forward to Nintendo's shit too, but I'm guaranteed a MGS4 trailer, so that's what I'm going with. If they show a new Mario or something I'll shit my pants in many different new ways.

The thing is, the first trailers for new MGS games have always been about the game concept more than simply showing off visuals and story, so you HAVE something to go on from. They've all been a great representation of what you could expect to be getting out of the actual finished product, and I don't expect the MGS4 teaser to be any different.

I get what you're saying. I'm just talking strictly on a level of what you're most interested in. I think its generally easier for a playable game to win the award over a non playable since you are getting to experience how its really going to play. So if its a non playable that excites you the most, then it generally says alot about what you're seeing in that trailer for you to like it over all those other games that you can play (and in a way say alot about those playables too).

I don't really think MGS4 will get GoTS from any sites like IGN or Gamespot just because of the uproar MGS2 caused when it started getitng them and there was a backlash against them for giving it to a non playable. In that sense, people shouldn't be all that worried about it getting the award. Now on this forum, that's a completely different story. As the GoTY for this forum last year showed (with MGS3 winning), MGS is extremely popular here.

Miyamoto will turn up in a Happy Mario 20th T-shirt
Iwata will stay have the gayest hair cut in the world
Matt cassassassassasseenymeenyminymoo will post something the day before TGS, that makes the NintenCamp go……..WTF!!
Kojimi will announce a new game for Rev.
Square Enix will announce 2-3 games on Rev/DS

"gameplay over graphics" is a fine dogma so far as it goes, but there's a reason video games are called video games. we talk to them with controllers, but they talk to us primarily with graphics. if you're going to tell me that a decent trailer doesn't tell you anything about how a game will play, then either you're taking an extreme position to make a point or there's something wrong with you.

in any case, to display a game at a trade show is almost fundamentally to misrepresent an unfinished product. a trailer is a totally legitimate way to do so. playable demos can very easily mislead: i can think of a dozen great demos that became disappointing games. and vice versa. you may as well ask us to withhold judgement until we've played the games proper. for 60 hours. a good trailer is almost more deserving of recognition than a good demo: it's self-contained and may still be fun to watch after the game comes out.

of course i'm not going to tgs, and i'd obviously rather see a painstakingly edited mgs4 trailer than handicam footage of some retard crashing into every single wall in ridge racer 6. but that's me.

You've actually been unable to assess gameplay based on trailers before? Each MGS trailer has given us a detailed look at many gameplay possibilities and my thoughts on those trailers originally are quite near the reality. It isn't difficult to understand how a game may play when viewing such trailers.

These shows are intended to give us an idea of how the new games will look and play. There are many different methods of demonstrating this to the audience. In the case of a game that is a long way from completion, a non-interactive demo is generally the best way to go as that might be the only way to convey your ideas to the public. We've seen this many times before...

From MGS2 and 3 to Half-Life 2 to Doom 3 all the way to Halo 2. Each of them demonstrated the gameplay in a very accurate fashion and what was shown to the public during these demonstrations held true for the final products. In Halo 2's case, despite the fact that the actual level was not present in the final product, the actual gameplay mechanics really were. Judging gameplay from a demo of this sort is simple in most cases, provided they actually do, in fact, demonstrate gameplay.

why has this turned into a MGS4 thread? didn't 3 only just come out? Surely 4 is at least 2 years and a couple of trailers off yet.

and as for showing stuff on final hardware - I thought Sony weren't planning on delivering final devkits until December, so anything running will be on alpha or beta hardware.

I think TGS fever will start tomorrow, since new Famitsu will probably have first screens of MGS4 and RR6.

I think Kojima will likely just tell them where its taking place along with a bunch of other secrets and art. I'm not expecting any screens of it in the issue.

Because Kojima's confirmed that he's showing MG running on a PS3 engine at TGS. Whether or not its a teaser or the game, its going to be an indication of what we're going to be seeing with MGS4.

The trailers are a part of the MGS experience. :P

The build-up to release is exciting!

Quoted for truth (regarding MGS2)

I'm playing a game, not watching a movie. Even Kojima said that he is going to shy away from the long cutscene - action sequence - long cutscene formula in the next version. At least it seemed like he said that in one of the latest EGM mags.

Well in the case of MGS2 the trailer had things that didnt end up in the game.....and i would probably say that the trailer was better than the game itself.......
MGS3 is another beast though....

He never said he was going to shy away from long cutscenes. He said he's going to do it in a different way so its not cutscene, action sequence, cutscene ect. It's going to have a strong story according to him, its just going to be presented in a new way.

Probably mostly in gameplay this time?

I also hope the codec is used during actual gameplay ala Splinter Cell.

Well, whatever that way is - I sure hope it's different than what I have experienced. It gets boring just watching and not playing.

The way I read it, it seemed like he was saying that long cutscenes were going away.

Dude, quit suggesting changes for a series you don't like. :P

The cutscenes AND the gameplay are important to the fans. MGS2 went way overboard for most people, though...

That's like me saying "I don't like Madden at all, so I hope the next version actually features weapons and combat instead". Fans of the series sure as hell wouldn't want that, now would they?

If you want an example of what he considers less cutscenes, then play MGS3. That's the game he said he'd tone the amount of cutscenes down in.
That is true, but the first hour or so of MGS3 is still loaded with them. Once you get into Operation Snake Eater, you almost forget the radio (codec) even exists.

Why? Because it would end up being more to my liking? Are you afraid that someone at Konami is going to pick up on it and run with it?

Quit over reacting dark. Get a grip.

No, if you want a game like Splinter Cell, then why not buy Splinter Cell? They're going to release a new one every year so its not like you'll have long to wait for each game.

ugh, enough already, does the debate really need to happen here? They're very different games. This thread is killing my desire for both.

So Capcom isn't planning on showing DEAD RISING?!? That sucks. I want more zombie killing games.

I'm not over-reacting at all. You seem to think I'm going crazy over this, but I'm really not at all. I'm bored and this is something to do. Perhaps my posting style makes it seem that way, but I'm nowhere near as serious as you seem to think.

I wouldn't want the series to be more to your liking, though, as it wouldn't even be the same game.

I mean, Madden with guns? Mario with vehicles? Halo 3 - Xtreme Snowboarding? Radically changing a popular series is a bad thing.

No, if you want a game like Splinter Cell, then why not buy Splinter Cell? They're going to release a new one every year so its not like you'll have long to wait for each game.
Hell, they almost released two in one year!

The thing is, there were plenty of elements I really enjoyed in MGS2. I just think that if they changed some things, I would have less that would detract from my experience.

Now, that's just what I would like to see. That's all. You guys are intolerant of any viewpoint other than your own. It's one thing to disagree. There is no reason to make it personal.

I just don't get why you want another game to play like a game that already exists. It's like the people who want Tekken to play just like Virtua Fighter or vice versa. What's the point? One already exists so you can always play that one. It's good to have big games in series that play differently from one another. We have enough replicas of games all through the industry to be turning an established series into another.

Before Kitase and Nomura's comments in the newest EGM, I was actually holding onto hope that Square would officially drop the "Yes, yes, FFVII Remake IS coming for PS3!" news @ TGS. :(

I hope the PS3 Tekken shows up in a more detailed form than extreme close-ups of Jin ala E3 video. :D

the prolbem is that he hate sony and refuse to buy a ps2 and therefore his trashing mgs as much as he can. if he had a job he'd get a PS2 along with RE4 compelete version, colossus, soul calibur 3, MGS3 susbistence, FF12 and so on. but he obviously dont want to play good games.

just put him on ignore and never quote him again. kthx.

Keep your lying libel to yourself please.

Owned a PS2 since launch. Owned it for a few years. Sold it late last year in order to get more funds for games since the majority of the games I saw that I wanted on the horizon were multiplatform and I would just get on the Xbox.

I don't hate Sony. I own stock in Sony. Do I hate Sony? I don't think so. Nice lie.

I missed out on God of War, but other than that, there really isn't anything else that was exclusive that interested me. I have a cube, so I already played RE4.

I'm also looking forward to the release of the PS3.

Solid can lie all day long, but thats the honest truth.

Lying about others and posting libel should be a bannable offense IMO.

I couldn't imagine not owning a PS2. There is just so many games you have access to that arent on other systems, not even mentioning the insane PSOne backlog.

Hell Backwards Compat is one of the big reasons I HAVE to buy a PS3. I mean why not? I can play PSOne, PS2 and PS3 games on one freakin system. :O :O :O :O

whats wrong with wanting a game like MGS to evolve? I mean Kojima does ...why else would he change the camera finally?

Evolving is one thing, turning it into another series is a completely different thing. Play MGS and then MGS2 and then 3, those are natural evolutions. MGS3 to Splinter Cell isn't.

Yeah, I love BC. GBA and PS2 really showed me how awesome it is, I can't live without it now. I play old games all the time!

I for one, welcome the camera change. It's about time the game moved on from that obsolete gameplay-hindering camera system.

I liked both MGS2 and MGS3, but can't say I loved the gameplay. I thought the camera system dictated too much of the gameplay and held it back big time.
