I consider the Switches as being on their own timeline. They straddle the generational fence, making assigning them to one or the other rather arbitrary. I don't think they fit the generational categories well.

Console generations exists before Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft started to made consoles, is just a global chronology measure… If we go by company measurements the PlayStation is at 5 gen, the Switch 2 at 8 gen, Xbox at 4 gen.

Yeah, I suppose you could assign generations within each system. In that case, everyone is on their own timeline.

I'm accustomed to using the term "generations" to refer to the console field in general, though, rather than to each system individually. Granted, "the field in general" usually reduces to PS and Xbox, at least over the past several gens...

The gaming community not the companies started to use the power of the consoles as a metric for generations back in the Wii era, and that was wrong… always was a chronological thing since Gen 1.

Despite what Nintendo used to say about not competing against others, or fanboys either way, what matters is whether it is a successor to the prior generation and what it sits next to on the shelf for the majority of its intended life. It is an early next gen machine from the people who don't deliver bleeding edge graphics.

Huh? Reading comprehension issue? The question is about the switch not the switch 2? The switch doesn't have an ultra fast ssd, rt, hardware decompression, etc? Man I don't know what is going on in the USA but y'all need to learn how to read.

Wrong. The wii U was part of the ps360 generation in terms of technology. It's borne out in the games released for the system. The Switch 2 falls in line with the ps5/xbox series generation in terms of hardware design. All the technological talking points about the switch 2 are a copy and paste from the ps5/Xbox series generation. The switch 2 does absolutely nothing new from a design paradigm perspective. It's chip was taped out in 2021 literally 1 year after the ps5/series released. There's no way a 2021 old chip is 10th generation in anything. Again, the Switch 2 is a 9th generation console. The original switch is an 8th gen console. Next gen never starts when Nintendo says so because Nintendo lags behind technologically.

So… Dreamcast is not part of Gen 6 now?? Stop dragging the hardware power into a timeline thing, there's not relation at all… The next Gen Corolla has almost the same engine as the current one, that doesn't means both are the same generation.

It's a 9th generation console.

Generations should be defined by where they fell on the timeline in terms of game design/industry sensibilities. Categorizing by raw power makes no sense, especially nowadays when that stuff is so all over the place and we're seeing such large diminishing returns.

You think the people claiming Switch 2 isn't a next gen machine aren't in denial? Because that's what I was saying.

I was agreeing with the person I quoted that it's the first next gen console (10th gen, that will be measured against PS6/NextBox in terms of sales).

NO WAY!!! So you think the Switch is a 9th gen console, that happens to not have many 9th gen 3rd party games. But Nintendo's 10th gen console will play basically ALL 9th gen console games. You don't find that to be odd?
