So, whatever happened to the handshake?

For me the handshake is always professional/formal greetings. No one ever handshakes their good friend.

Actually, my good friends and I don't really have a greeting. It's all verbal. Sad but true.

I do not understand the bro-hug at all. It confuses the god damn shit out of me. Arms get twisted and contorted like a bunch of snakes playing in a bed. Ffs just shake my hand you ass.

I hate shacking hands, I prefer the corny fist pump or the legendary head nod. They're a lot easier not to screw up..

I'm white, 21, and from the USA... and the fist bump is the most widely used form of acknowledgement in my circle. Even strangers love it because we're either serious (and awesome) or we're doing it to be ironic (and awesome).

Handshake for work environment, hugs for good friends.

What's wrong with a bear hug? Best phrases to come out of Wedding Crashers "Bring it in for the real thing" and "Let papa bear get his paws on you"

Edit: Uh, 23 white male?

How can it be both serious and ironic? It can only be one or the other

so much fodder in this post I wouldn't even know where to start..

Handshakes man,closer to each other.
I hate when a girl shakes hand instead of kissing though!Way to throw me off balance!

edit:lol at ironic fist bump.

I bet you and your friends show eachother your electric ice cream face tattoos as a greeting, ya fruit.

Handshakes are still going strong in professional environments and possibly when meeting new people.

You (I) don't shake a friends hand though.

edit: What the above guy said :p

edit 2: Helps find out what sort of person you're dealing with. Don't even bother if you're gonna pussy hand shake like a 4 year old girl.

You are clearly doing it wrong if you hands get tangled. Just grasp the other hand as if you were arm wrestling, come in close for a one handed hug. Simple and quick

no we wear backpacks and compare skinny jeans as greetings

Everyone I know pretty much does the...err "black handshake", for lack of a better term. Unless it's someone I'm just meeting, it's usually this, with friends. Even Obama does it!

I do handshakes most of the time. My problem is as I grew up it was instilled in my brain to have a firm handshake and not be all limp and noodly, so I always do firm handshakes but everybody else does limp noodly ones so I feel like I'm crushing their hands. If you're gonna shake hands, do it right.

The only time I do fist bumps is if I'm passing by somebody at work, and I only do it as a "fuck yeah, we're doing awesome" kinda thing not as a greeting.

So wait... you carry around a backpack, but only put it on when you want to greet someone?

what the fuck is wrong with the world?

i still use handshakes. never fistbumps.

handshakes when first meeting somebody, or greeting somebody that i haven't seen in a while.

some variation of a five or the predator DYLAAAN 'handhsake' with my straight male friends.

usually a hug with my gay friends.

a smile or a hug with my female friends.

A nod is a greeting here
Yeah, unless I'm being formally introduced to somebody a nod, wave, or a wave-salute combination does the trick. Not for germophobic reasons; it just seems enough and works over longer distances.

Really? Where i live (belgium) we all shake hands, with girls a kiss on the cheek, i do fistbumps all the time when im drunk though.

I learned when I was 13 to have a good firm handshake. Interviewers are always impressed when a teenager has a good handshake.

Handshakes are too old fashioned. Me and my friends greet each other like this:

I saw this all the time in high school. the clique I rolled with were too nerdy for this

Kiss on the cheek for any friend (male/female) is the norm here (belgium too), handshake for people you don't know. I was a bit wierded out when I noticed people found that strange in other countries...

I grab my male friends right by the nuts and squeeze hard so they know I own this shit. With the ladies I give a quick nipple twist to let them know I own this shit.

Know what's weirder? Went to shake the hand of one of an E-7 and he did a WRIST shake. Grabbed my WRIST and shook it.

That's how they do it over seas. He must have been stationed in the Middle East somewhere.

I always try to handshake, but everyone just turns it into the stupid finger-grip-and-slide or whatever you call that. Sometimes I get fed up and tighten my grip to disallow this. It always leads to a good awkward laugh.

And respek knuckles are of course encouraged when deserved,
but no explosions.

Fist bumps seem weird to me. My entire social circle and nearly everyone I've meet or greeted formally have been cool with the handshake.

Remember kids, for superiority puropses during a handshake put your other hand over the other guys hand to show you are the boss, if the guy puts his other hand on your upper arm he isn't intimidated and sees you as equal.

Yeah hanging out with snobby friends has its purposes... :D
