• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

so what's actually worth getting on PSP?

so my dad calls me at 1am (local jpn time) asking me what wipeout pure is. i reply, it's a PSP launch title, and why could you possibly want to know that? he's all, some vendor gave it to me as a gift, along with something called a value pack. I immediately come to full awake mode and go, EHHHHHHHHHHH in the japanese style. he asks me what he should do with it, so i tell him to give it to me. so my mom is gonna bring it with her when she comes to visit me from the states next month.

so now i have a PSP. aside from lumines, which i played out while working at 1up, and Exit/Suikoden 1+2, which i'm gonna get regardless, what's worth having?

and before the haters come in, i already have a DS. (selling back to trade for a lite!)

You know, I'm going to second Grand Theft Auto.

I've never been a fan of the franchise, so I waited a while to play the PSP version. Much to my surprise, I've found myself quite taken by it. Can't say that I've enjoyed every mission, but the relatively open nature of the main quest, coupled with all the goofing off that can be done, makes it a great game for taking with you or playing at home.

Dropping off passengers with the Taxi is great fun (easily as good as Crazy Taxi). So is taking the sniper rifle up onto a roof and trying to see how high you can raise your wanted level. My God, there's so much to do. Noodle and pizza delivery, rampage missions, firetruck mayhem, street racing anytime you like, ambulance driver, police car driver, firetruck driver, and so on...

It's also fun to just observe what happens in the environment around you. You'll see random car accidents, pedestrians doing stupid stuff, ambulances and EMTs attending to injured people, cops chasing muggers on foot, gangs fighting each other, etc.

Some sucky things, to me, are that some of the side missions are a real pain to "finish" and that a couple of the early missions are bitch hard. They make you put in a lot of work just to get to the 2nd island, after which everything seems nicely balanced. Also, the framerate or something about the visuals sometimes makes me physically wonky.

The good stuff so greatly outweighs the bad, and I'm very glad I gave the game a chance. Now I'm tempted to give San Andreas a shot, even though my core still says "to hell with GTA!"

see, i was terrible at San Andreas (having never played a modern GTA before that--i used to play 1 all the time in my freshman year of college on the LAN), so i'm hesitant to go for liberty city stories.

Pursuit Force!

Wow, you are really trying way hard mosaic. lols

I have the following games and I'll give you my impressions

Legend of Heroes
Alright game. It has a good story, but the gameplay seems a little flawed. The pacing of the game is off and I haven't touched it in a while.

Lumines
One of the best puzzle games ever made. I got this at launch and I still find myself humming Shinin every once in a while. Defintly recommend the game.

Madden NFL 2005
Sucks. Bad graphics (for the psp), flawed gameplay and a on-line setup.

Metal Gear Acid
Good game. I'm not a fan of strategy games, but I decided to give Acid a shot and I like it.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour
Good game. The only problem I have with this are the load times (they're horrid).

The next 3 are Japanese games (two are out in America)

Street Fighter Zero 3 (Alpha 3 in the states)
I just got this today and I totally love it. I got the d-pad adapter (which is on my homebrew PSP and it works great), but I have no problem with the PSP's d-pad. Defintly recommend.

Rockman Irregular Hunter X (Megaman in the states)
Perfect remake. One of the best Megaman games I've played in a long time and I highly recommend it.

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (March release date in America)
I've beat this on the PS2 and the PSP version is just as fun. The only problem I have with it are the load times.

Tales of eternia FTL :(
you're better off playing the original on PS1

Metal gear acid is not for everyone.....

I'd say Lumines, Exit, Katamari, Hot shots golf, GTA:LCS....and not much else at the moment

Hot Shots Golf is digital crack, perfect protable game too as you dont need to be paying constant attention to it. I just wish there was a way for me to show you all my 260 yard chip in.

When i get my N80 i'll record it so you can all see.

Also Lumines, GTA, Pursuit Force (some levels suck but most are good), Wipeout Fusion (not a great portable game but a great game none the less).

Besides those mentioned above... SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo. The second best PSP game, right behind GTA. Deep single player game, and ridiculously robust, and very playable online play for up to 16 players w/voice chat.

Maverick Hunter X.
This game is so unbelievably good. Get it now!
Just played trough it again as Vile. Mega Man remakes on PSP ROCK! I can't wait for Powered Up after playing the demo.

If I was going to pick three outside the ones you're getting I would say Ridge Racer (great arcade racing, fantastic looking game), Hot Shots Golf (great portable golf, only weakness is it can get repetetive), and GTA (sheer variety and length, good story).

I just got Maverick Hunter X (Irregular Hunter in JP) and that's great as well, just bought Exit yesterday and looking forward to trying it out.

The ones I've played the most are Lumines, Ridge recer, Hot shots golf, Wipeout pure, and Metal gear acid, Ape academy too, but that's probably just me :D

Don't forget to buy a 1-2 gig memory stick and you're set

Well, I haven't played all these, (and some aren't out) but: Wipeout Pure, Burnout, Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2, Megaman Powered Up, SFA3 Max, Darkstalkers (if you can control it), Megaman MHX, Gradius Collection, Ys, GTA:LCS, Samurai Warriors, GGX#R...

It's a hell of a lot of games for a system that is constantly trolled here for not having any.

I have (besides Luimines and Wipeout Pure) Ridge Racer, GTA, Tales of Eternia and Virtua Tennis. All wich I can recomend.

On the think before you buy list I've got Kingdom of Paradise, wich is an ok game IMO, if you ignore the horror that is it's cut scenes. Wich unfortunately is hard do because you can't skip them effectively *cry*.

At the very least, Wipeout Pure, Lumines and Ridge Racers. MGA is a niche selection, really. I'm sure Liberty City Stories is nice, but I never picked it up for my PSP to be honest.

I completely agree with this post.

If you're REALLY a racing fan, the PSP Burnout game is also very good, and of course Outrun is coming in March. The Twisted Metal entry on PSP is also very good if you're a fan of the series -- the gameplay feels like a cross between TM2 and TM:B.

Too bad you're getting an American PSP. Aren't the movies region-encoded? That means no hentai for you. :D
1) As a rule, porn is almost always region free.

2) There's more to "pron" than hentai.

3) I'm sad to know all of this.

Not sad. I think everyone in the thread nodded when they read this. :lol

Anyway, my list of recommended games (inclusive of the original ones listed in the original post):

DJ Max Portable (my favorite PSP game, hands-down)
Lumines (will keep me going for the time being until Tetris DS hits)
Gripshift (just got it, and I think it's really fun!)
Ridge Racer (very solid if you are a fan of the series, but probably won't convert you if you aren't)
Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee (having fun with it, it's giving me my post-MGAT fix)
Wipeout: Pure (started off slow, but now I'm hooked!)
Exit (hit or miss with people; I think it's fun, although the guy seriously needs learn how to climb ladders faster)

There are others that other GAFers have mentioned, but since I haven't played them, I can't comment.

I'm sure they've already been said, but everything I'd recommend...

Irregular Hunter X
EXIT
Boku no Watashi no Katamari Damashii
Gradius Portable
Tales of Eternia
Ridge Racers
Lumines
Wipeout Pure
Metal Gear Ac!d
Metal Gear Ac!d 2
Karakuri
Virtua Tennis
Minna no Golf

Console like games which are pretty good...
Grand Theft Auto
Burnout Legends

Seems like there is a LOT more on the way, however...

I just played the new Syphon Filter demo on my lunch break at gamestop. It was the first PSP game I've played but it looked beautiful and played fairly well I thought. It was just the demo though, but consider checking it out. I believe you can get the demo if you pre-order from gamestop.

High definition porn on a low definition screen? Wow, the PSP is more amazing than I thought.
