granted, Xbox 360 is a major leap over Xbox. even if its less powerful than Revolution and Playstation3, the 360 will still be able to stand up to what will probably be better, more powerful consoles.
now, even though we have not really seen REAL ACTUAL Xbox360 games in motion, or even screenshots (everything is on early or alpha development kits, not final hardware)..
realtime graphics will still have a long long LONG ways to go, beyond this gen. beyond Revolution and Playstation3.
so when does Microsoft get cracking on the 3rd-generation of Xbox? call it Xenon2 or XboxIII or whatever.
I don't expect X3 before 2010. the Xbox1 lasted 4 years. Xbox360 should last 5 years.
id expect Microsoft and ATI to work as hard as they can toward realtime raytracing, global illumination, and all of the other highly desired rendering techniques that are not only impossible today, but will be impossible in the upcoming gen (Xbox360, Rev, PS3).
by 2008, we might just see raytracing and GI in PCs and workstations, so it might just happen for consoles by 2010-2011.
but regardless of graphics, Microsoft will have to start serious development of Xenon2 by next year, 2006. just like they started serious development of Xenon in 2002.
