So with ps3 screens and movies coming out now...is "next gen" REALLY here now?

So did sony live up to its hype for most of you? I'm gonna say the most impressive "next gen" things i've seen so far myself are Tony Hawk 8 and Gears of War. Wii's controller is turning out to be something that transcends this whole "next gen" thing and its kinda refreshing.

What Sony has shown certainly has come the closest to matching my expectations as most of the games demonstrate a bunch of things that I was looking for. Whether this really holds true in the end remains to be seen. What they have shown is far beyond what MS had last year.

We're seeing some stuff like that on 360 too, though. Lost Planet, for one, looks amazing in motion (and is a lot of fun). Things are starting to look bright for the future on both machines.

I just want to see what a lot of other JP developers have in store...

Yeah next gen started with Oblivion and Graw.

E3 is getting the ball freakin rolling though. Some of this stuff is just plain Nucking Futs.

I haven't even looked for any PS3 footage or game info so far. I've been downloading a bunch of stuff off the live marketplace and reading up on the Wii.

I want to see MGS4 though.

The console isn't even out.
But in my opinion yes, MGS4, FFXIII,Naughty Dog game,Heavenly Sword, Lair (if it's confirmed to be real time) are all exactly what I want from next gen titles.

To be honest, judging from the PS3 screens, next gen HAS been here starting with the X360. Sony is just playing catch-up now.

Honestly now

Put talented developers on both of these machines and you will see mindblowing graphics on either of them.

I think Sony and Microsoft are delivering next gen graphically and Nintendo is delivering next gen with control, and I think that's awesome.

If I want to play some mind blowingly amazing lucious graphical masterpiece I can slide in something for my 360/PS3, and if I want to play something absolutely new that feels like nothing else I've ever played, that's what the Wii is for.

It's really nice having such a difference in variety/option. We've never seen such a discrepencie hardware wise, and I don't know about the lot of you, but I'm the typical gamer who fucking adores variety in game(play). Give me Frequency, ICO, Smash Brothers, and Halo or give me death.

agreed

I see nothing that with the right Devs couldn't be done on either machine

it's going to be a good next gen

I was down and out about PS3 until I saw Heavenly Sword being played in HD at 60fps!

The impresions of warhawk with the motion sense sounds extremely promising.

PS3 and 360 will be a must for me.

Next gen was here with the 360.

Only game I'm interested on the PS3 is MGS4, and to me the game still looks like it has relatively low res textures and washed out.

Oh and it's all the same bloody colour still.

next-gen started a quite a while ago (fnr3,graw,oblivionnnnnnnn)but with wii's innovation, sony's convergence juggernaut and 360's upcoming AAA titles sure things r gonna get much more exciting :)))

It will be here when Ridge Racer 7 hits November 17th :)

Well, IMO the PS3 did MOSTLY (MGS4 not included) not live up to the graphical expectations, but there's something most people seem to forget here and that is the fact that these are only the first games. Look at the graphics on PS2 when it launched, and look at the graphics now, for example Shadow of the Colossus. Things will get much better!

I predict as we near the end of this new generation, all the stuff that was shown at E32005 will be surpassed. This backlash at the lack of progress seems highly reminiscent of the backlash the PS2 faced, and was so strong that its still a meme that continues to be repeated despite there been ample evidence that the PS2 has exceeded its original target videos.

Well, except for AA... I'm not expect Killzone 2 level graphics WITH the anti aliasing they had in those shots. Unless my memory is foggy on the AA...

Prettier graphics don't make it "next gen" for me. The wiimote and the tilt sensor in the PS3 make it next gen. Gameplay>graphics for me.

My bet is : PS3 tilt sensor = PS2 pressure sensitive buttons

A game featuring higher poly crysis-esque SSS skin shaded characters with facial muscle simulation and high-rez clothing with physics. In an uber textured high poly environment with Lair's fire effects and Naughty's GI-esque lighting should be able to pretty much match/exceed killzone in the eyes of casuals and most everyone minus those most jaded.

I find it surprising that devs are managing to get 720/1080p and 60fps out of development hardware, with 6 months to go to optimise.

Maybe Sony's HD era PR blurb wasn't just PR

I'll be waiting to see what the launch line up is like first.

At the moment although PS3 is obviously capable of next-gen, similar to 360 I suspect that the launch will be somewhat underwhelming, and it will be titles in March/April 2007 that really show the PS3's potential - a la Oblivion and GRAW for 360.

Of course, I think this is simply par for the course with any launch.

Next-gen graphics are in Crysis. Apart from that it looks like a fairly typical FPS

I'm not sold on the enxt-gen dream just yet. Maybe the 2nd wave of software will change that

Fake Pitfall Naughty Dog jungle was close to Crysis' jungle.

I just want my vastly improved AI. Havok needs an AI-oriented sister company or radiant needs to evolve/become more accessible to average developers. For graphics, I'm really happy with anything produced in the last few years + better lighting and shaders-a-plenty.

Oblivion is an artistic step back (not making crituque the gameplay), the weird normal maps used in some places, the lack of blending when a rock connects to the grass, or when water connects to the shore, when the façade of a castle wall connects to the floor,, lack of blending makes Oblivion questionable when people mention it as next gen.

No for the character models of Olbibion,, it speaks for itself that these models are not next gen at all,, especiall for their technique of morphing the faces in create a character... you have wrestling games, golf games and mafia games that do this better in current gen.

and last,, 5 o'clock shadow on the women's face textures
