Socom 3 - Gamespot review

i'm excited for this.... now if only my university network would open up access to video game consoles so we can play online again....

the few 32 player games I played in tonight were so lag free that I didnt even really think about it. I was actually able to think about what the heck I was trying to do. there still is framerate slowdown but its nothing SOCOM players shouldnt already be used to.

so far no crashes or lockups which is a plus. maps seem to load faster and the online features are for the most part well organized. the friends list isnt on par with Xbox Live but its way better than what was in SOCOM 2.

some of the maps are huge but I dont think Ive even come close to playing on most of them. this one map had me lost on just about every round. there were just so many directions to go. its probably a simple map but I was having a hard time navigating it for 5 or 6 rounds. as much as people want to bash the graphics of this game I think its worth noting that there are some really nice structures, rubble, and plant life in some of the maps.

overall gameplay seems solid. I think theres more new elements in the game than people might think going into it. one thing is you have to realize when you get in deep water where you have to swim, you cant fire your weapon so youre a sitting duck if someone catches you in the middle of crossing some water. you can go underwater but it will force you back up after youre breath meter depletes.

a lot of people are having problems with killing their teammates because of the way the names over players heads works. sometimes it fades in kinda slow and if youre trigger finger is itchy youll probably cap a teammate. I didnt really have a problem with it once I realized what was going on. using the radar to see your teammates positions and the reticule to identify enemies pretty much covers it.

As for graphics, honestly who really gives a damn regarding Socom, it's always been functional and that's that, but at least the maps are massive and now support 32 players online this time. Framerate is more of an issue.
His point was that considering it's accepted that the graphics are pretty basic, by all standards, why score it so high in the graphics dept? Sure, put 10 down for gameplay, but great graphics it doesn't have.

From what I've played tonight, Socom3 runs smoother than the first 2 games. There was no communication problem and no lag at all. I'm quite impressed since the maps are fucking huge, it's now 32 players and vehicule physics are quite good. The aiming and collision detection seems better as well... Zipper did an amazing job, online gamers and Socom fans, go get it! :)
