SOMA |OT| I Have No Mouth but I Will Scream, on The Dark Descent into A Machine

Downloading on NA PSN. Will probably post some video of my playthrough later for anyone who might be into that sort of thing.

if they are so good they inspire people to produce amazing scifi movies, why wouldn't they be ?

Hmm... good premises don't indicate good stories just because.

plenty of great movies based on short stories or books that are just really badly written.

I'll look for the author. i find it hard to read good sci fi tbh. but i am sure that is due to me not finding the right author.

Hmm, got to Delta Site now but I'm not really feeling it much so far, it's ok just not great =/

The mystery of the story and the atmosphere are both pretty damn good so far, but it's really not very scary at all. I don't mind that but it don't think much has been substituted in its place.

Plus, this may just be me, but it's got the same problem I found with Amnesia where it's not really clear at times where you're meant to be going and you just sort of aimlessly wander until you stumble upon the right thing. It feels so easy to get lost, especially underwater.

It's funny how Frictional's first and least talked about game, Penumbra, is still by far my favourite one.

Just a heads up for PlayStation N/A users.I was able to search for the game via the moble app store and put it in my download queue. I'm at work so I'm unable to see if the game is downloading, but it looks like it from here.

So, I plan on streaming this today, but I wanted to know if the gamepad controls are worthwhile and up to the task of streaming it on HTPC and on my comfy couch. Otherwise I'll stream it from my gaming PC.

Input anyone?

I am using the gamepad, (360 controller) and it works really well. Even tho there is no setting to adjust the speed of the joystick for view.

I'm honestly surprised you've not heard of Philip K Dick. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest sci fi authors ever, and was hugely influential on the medium's future.

Was wondering the same, and just general impressions on performance.

The 10% discount is making me lean that way.
It's 30 fps 98% of the time. A few drops during scripted moments, but nothing too bad. A few pauses for loading in a few spots here and there.

I'm going to wait until later tonight to continue. It feels like a crime to be playing this with the sun coming through my windows.

Anyone wanna help me? I'm not too far in - I got to the
comms center
and am in the water now. Just found the
little robot
and walked a bit farther to the
station in the water
? Can't figure out how to get in

remove the rocks from the trapped robot and let the little robot follow you to the transport station entrance and she'll open the door for you

I am excited to pick up some of his work then. Anything i should pick first?

whos' that?

Probably one of the most influential of the modern Sci Fi authors. Better at writing short fiction IMO, of which there is a metric shit ton available, but some of his novels (Ubik, Valis, Man in the High Castle, A Scanner Darkly, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and Martian Time-Slip, to name a few off the top of my head) are absolute crackers. I'm not even close to having read everything by him yet.

PKD tends to focus on the pliable nature of reality and what it means to be human. It's great, mind-bending stuff. Also: he's fucking nuts.

The game opens to a quote from him. Heavily influenced IMO.

Really? What's the quote (in spoilers or PM)?

Famous sci fi author. Wrote the books and short stories that Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly, and Minority Report were based on

^This. The guy is a legend.

Oh. big fan of the movies. Are the books well written?

A lot of his novels are mash ups of concepts and sections from his short story work (where he made his money). He seems to have a much better handle on the shorter stuff, I get the sense he was never quite sure how to end the longer works. In any case, the journey there is always worth it and his twists and turns are always brilliantly devastating. Nicely written, great concepts, and filled with a charmingly dark sense of humour.

I recommend getting an anthology of his short stories first as a lot of his best work is there, then hit the novels (I mentioned a few above). Gimme a shout if you want recommendations, Brau. Love to hear what you think.

Hands down the best novel he ever wrote.

I just died a little.

well... excuuuuuse me.

It was an honest question.. and now that i know.. i will read it and hopefully praise it for how good it is.

Picked Ubik.

Link me up to whcih one and i'll pick it up right now. Lately i have 40 mins to kill on the MAX. so a good book would be welcome. I am excited to read this now. :)

Okay, so Amnesia was too much for me. Will I be able to play this game? I want to support what this developer is doing but if this is on the same level as Amnesia there's no way I'll be buying this right now.

I could barely play a few minutes of Amnesia and I'm currently 2 hours into SOMA. You should be good

I played a couple hours and I'm not really feeling it.

I'm in the bit after the shuttle crashes and I have to say that the ocean walking parts are the worst thing about the game. They're boring, sluggish and a chore. Not even the underwater robots can spice it up. Bioshock 2 was better in that regard, more condensed and interesting underwater segments.

There are also occasional stutters and freezes. I played a little bit of Amnesia for the first time yesterday to get into the SOMA mood, and that game was better than this one so far and more immersive. I love the interface (buttons, levers, etc.) though.

I like the choice mechanics- didn't pull Carl's lever so I had to deal with that one monster in the room where you log onto the computers to power the comms center. Afterwards, thinking that without safety systems I'd be too stranded to help her anyway, I let Amy die. The fact that Simon was some sort of robot was quite evident, called it the moment Simon woke up in the facility.

The atmosphere isn't very potent (I blame the sluggish movements) and also is it just me or isn't it shitty design to have your character limp after every death unless you find a cyber sphincter?

Overall, I'll be playing but it's a disappointment so far.

Also, my CPU is i73630QM and my GPU is Nvidia Geforce 650M. Which settings should I use? I went with the autodetect but I think that made it sub-30 FPS.

Early story reveal spoilers:
Was totally blindsided by the post-apocalyptic aspect. When I saw the comet stuff in the comm center, I first thought it meant the comet was coming and they were trying to find a way to stop it. And then you learn...nope, the surface is gone and this is many many decades later.

I unplugged Amy and then covered her with shit from around the room so no one would see her. I hope i did the right thing.

It was after this bit tho.
when you have to go up the ladder, and close the valve door.
That my game crashed twice.

Mannnnn this game is GREAT. I really love the atmosphere, it's so fucking oppressive and nauseating. It's also nice to be able to explore without monsters EVERYWHERE - they're rare and punctuate the slow crawl through the base.

I'm also really liking the voice acting. It seemed weirdly tone-deaf at first, but it sort of reminds me of the VA in Silent Hill 2 - it's eerily nonchalant for the kinds of situations that arise, which makes it really uncanny and distant feeling.

Very hard time liking this game. The first 2 hours were an absolute borefest. I almost fell asleep. And now
im constantly dying because i cant find a way out where you have to run away.

On top of that i cant even have 30fps locked on my 960m. Very disappointed. :(

Kinda glad it's not just me from the sound of it =/
And yeah, the underwater stuff is what really stands out worst!

I'm curious about the choice stuff though and what effect it will have long term.

I didn't realise there was a choice element at first with Carl until I'd accidentally killed him, and cos I was exploring around ended up releasing the monster anyway =/
I had no idea how to get around Amy and killed her

whos' that?

Incredible science fiction author, died in the 80s, wrote the books and/or short stories that Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly were based on, among many others. He's known for premises that explore the nature of reality and consciousness, what it means to be human, and other metaphysical concepts.

Edit: Wow, I'm late to this explanation party.

Edit: Ubik and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch are excellent, as others have said, and so are The Man in the High Castle (currently being adapted into a TV series by Amazon) and the lesser-known Dr. Bloodmoney.

This is pretty awesome. Love it when games or movies introduce me to good authors.

Fix for stuttering on PC (Nvidia):

-Enable adaptive v-sync and triple buffering via control panel
-Disable threaded optimization via control panel
-Turn OFF the in-game AA and set refresh rate to the same as your monitor.

There will still be slight hiccups when loading a level but you should no longer get the "turn around quickly and plummet to 15 FPS" thing happening.

Worked for me and a few others on Steam, the game is far more enjoyable without the sudden drops.

Not sure if turning AA off or disabling thread optimization are doing smething here. Maybe it's just a v-sync thing, the first tip should do the job already.

More help lol.

I just left lambda, found a ship or something? Opened it with omnitool and climbed up the ladder. I see the rip in the ceiling but it doesn't look like there's anywhere else to go?

edit:
this is after the life pod, already got the upgrade to my omnitool from that

edit2;

god im stupid nevermind
