SOMA |OT| I Have No Mouth but I Will Scream, on The Dark Descent into A Machine

Is this another case where all you can do is run and hide from big scary things with no means of retaliation? This looks interesting but that style of horror is just so dull and played out.

Still stuck.

At Delta trying to get to Theta.

I saw your stream, check the map on the terminal by the landing pad as to which zeppelin you need to call, then go to the satellite, align it with the zeppelin, and select a frequency that says it's connected, then you can call in the zeppelin from the landing pad terminal

Much appreciated, I will give it a shot.

Frictional Games popularized this sub-genre with Amnesia only 5 years ago(and have only published one other game since). Before that, there weren't many appealing horror games in that style. So I'm not sure what you mean by that comment, especially considering that Frictional are front runners of this genre.

This looks really interesting, hopefully it does not have too many jump scares(my neighbors will prob call the police when I'm playing at 2 in the morning). I like to explore around, searching through every nook and cranny in many games. Anyone know how long this game would last for me?

This motherfucking AI is sooooo annoying.
Oh my god these monsters are OBSESSED with hanging around wherever I am... fuck OFF already man
.

You'll really enjoy this game then

I'm really intrigued by the story and atmosphere but I'm a big scaredy cat. I can handle general creepiness but the whole running-and-hiding-while-powerless thing really turns me off. About how much of this game is avoiding things that kill you and how much is just spooky exploration?

gutting

I've got a feeling it'll be a slow builder. In terms of the horror as well as the atmosphere/quality. Will be interesting to see how you feel 7-8 hours in.

I sat on the hour I played, played a little more, and ultimately requested a refund. I can't get into the atmosphere and I struggle to take what is essentially
walker gears with parasites on them
as any real threat or scary thing.

Sound design was amazing, though. Reviews were right about that.

Around 8 hours ish total i guess, maybe a bit more.
But i did fully explore everything, listen to and read everything i could.

Man... i wish i had time to play this game for that long.

I played for almost 3 hrs this morning... until i got to the crash.. by then i had to turn it off anyways to get ready for work.

But really was enjoying the exploring, and the narrative. Story starting to take shape and it was captivating.

8 hrs seem like the right length too... is this game better than amnesia towards the end? amnesia just fell apart towards the ending.

oh wow.

i thought about a refund on my first 60 mins... after trying to get the 4k resolution to work...a dn then the low res look of the game overall. but it kinda grew on me the more i played it.

Seriously, theres Frictional games with 3 games like this and then Alien Isolation....what else is there? (Not even sure Alien counts since you get the flamethrower and weapons to use against the androids). Whats this "played out" nonsense?

Oh my god the monsters UNCANNY fucking ability to just "happen to wander" over to where I am is really killing me here. Lowering my opinion by the minute. Really not fun or interesting AT ALL. I just shove my face in a corner and sit there diddling on my phone until it walks away.

WOW SOOOO suspenseful. /s

Slender, Outlast, Five Nights series

Anything else?

Man, I watched a full playthrough of the game on youtube (had no intentions on buying it, but wanted to see the narrative) and the ending is really making me ponder about
what it is to be human
. I think that is a good thing when it comes to a sci-fi narrative. Oh
and watch all of the credits for the end scene
.

"Check the computer in the other room"

I found it, sure, but would it really ruin the experience if I had a damn marker or a map? The environment is nothing but rooms with blinking lights and monitors.

The game also stutters a lot for me. The framerate is fine I think, and my computer should more than capable of running it, it just stops and starts for no reason.

Strange, that sounds on the shorter side, lot of reviews saying 10-12 hours.

I agree, that's been a bugbear for me, especially underwater.

Isolation had a map and marker, and it didn't detract from the game or its level design.

This game fascinates me. I want to play it so badly... but I don't think the wimp inside me will be able to handle it.

I'm about two hours in, and my thoughts are pretty mixed. I like the setting, I like the narrative ideas they're exploring, I like that it's not Amnesia 2.0, it's aesthetically and audibly immersing, and I like that the narrative isn't leaning on the predictable twist.

But actually playing it isn't doing much for me. The hide-and-seek encounters, why rare, are simply too one dimension and been there, done that (even with the devs previous work) for me to be really invested in the tension and fear. They're presented well, but I find myself just wanting to ignore or push through them so I can continue everything else. And the other issue is that the moment-to-moment game design, particularly the level layouts, aren't very intriguing or stimulating. Visuals and audio are, but the play is oddly flat and uninspired.

Might be a game you might enjoy more from a full playthrough on twitch perhaps?

Nah, I personally cant stomach lets plays/walkthroughs. Even if I've got mixed thoughts on the game design I'll still push myself all the way through.

Is it only me here that actually found there to be too many encounters? I felt like there were too many of them, and that it would be better if there were like, <10 enemies throughout the whole game. The environment is interesting, the enemies aren't. They aren't fun to play against either.

About 70 minutes in and just found
What's remains of
Carl Semken
. I think I'm meant to find a sign on ID for a terminal in
Control Station B
, but not having any luck. I'd be really grateful if anyone had any tips.

Oh, also, the game is awesome so far. Love the opening!

Is there a choice element in this game? It seemed like I may have been able to not do a couple thing that I did, however it also seemed to be needed to get the power on for one of those moments.

I am looking forward to see what you think. Your impressions and thoughts on MGSV were pretty interesting. So can't wait to see what you think of this game.

With this kind of game you kinda want to play it at your own pace. Also a lot of atmosphere is just gone if you just watch it.

I agree... there is a lot to take in. I think they did a better job at showing the exposition of what is happening in the game this time around. Without just having VA dialogue every so often. So many things that you can see in the world that just make sense to what happened.

With that in mind, i think its worth playing. Just another option for people that might not enjoy playing the game.

The references in this thread about PKD influences is intriguing, as he was the pioneer for combining psychological horror and body-horror with high-minded science-fiction concepts and settings. I am definitely going to give this game a try tonight.

How is the sound design? Good music? Good ambient noise? Good directional noise cues?

Most reviews, as well as people impressions, and my experience. Sound design is really really good.

Not P.T good. But its above the norm.

I've played 2 hours and only encountered a short sequence of something that may or may not have killed me. Was fairly easy to maneuver around though. I suck at stealth so yeah.

Very small percentage is "hide and seek" gameplay, like 5-10%

Unfortunately I never played P.T. so I can't make the comparison.

Thank you for the answer, though. A game doesn't have good "atmosphere" if it doesn't also have good sound design IMO, so I was curious if people had opinions one way or another on the sound.

Regarding the shuttle station...
Man, that part gave me chills. Thinking about how far into the future the game is set and her being unable to die...how long has she been that way? That's a fate worse than death

I'm outside Theta now (played about 3 hours), really hate the underwater stuff, I was always feel so lost!

From my experience so far (just as I see a lot of people asking about the scares) I really would struggle to call this a horror game, at least in any traditional sense. Thematically it's a sci fi that deals with a lot on the philosophy of the self, and how technology impacts that.
In terms of mechanical gameplay though? No. Not at all. It's not been scary at all. Not even close.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, I think I'd be more disappointed if this was just Amnesia again but sci-fi, I'm glad they're doing something new. But if you're going to remove one thing, supplement with something else, and I don't feel they have.
Penumbra and Amnesia both tried to be a horror and the simple mechanics succeed in tandem with that. This is trying something else entirely, something harder to quantify, and I'm hesitant at how successful it is. But the gameplay doesn't work with it like Amnesia, it gets in the way.

I'm not finished of course but right now the story is spinning its wheels; I don't think it's strong enough to offset the other changes.
And if you've not got gameplay or story, you've not got much.
