Some Speedruns that I recommend

I thought it might be time for a speedrun thread. These four speedruns are definitley worth checking out for high entertainment value.

Castlevania Circle of The Moon. Completed in about 23 minutes(!). This speedrun is fantastic. Orge slayer is just blazing through the big castle and all the bosses. He abuses some glitches in the game, particulary the DSS system.

Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Completed in about 21 minutes. Super fast bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with Sonic and Tails

get it here

SNES Super Mario World. Completed in about 10 minutes. Super Mario World movie done faster than anyone imagined.

get it here

SNES Mega Man X2. Completed in about 34 minutes. Mega Man X2 makes a particularly interesting run as many of the weapons can actually be used in mobility, such as a grappling hook or even a weapon which can make enemies into platforms

Note: These runs are done on an emulator, but it doesn't take away that they are highly entertaining.

FOR RUNS WITHOUT EMUS. GO HERE (and stop complaining)

well, those were played on an emulator at 1/4 of the real speed. that's not impressive at all.

It's still impressive anyway, but the high point is the entertaiment value of watching it.

C'mon. It's like watching Barroid hit home runs. These aren't real gamers.

I'd say it takes alot of time to do this even with an emulator. It's not just starting up an emulator like a noob and think it's a cake walk.

It takes a lot of time to photoshop and doctor game images, are you saying they are more impressive than actual game screenshots?

gee stop complaining. These runs are to show: (straight from faq)

Entertainment comes when the video is:

* Variable (not slow, not boring or repetitive)
* Surprising (does things you'd not expect)
* Skillful (handles awkward situations efficiently and creatively)

Hey what!? There are 96 exits in Super Mario World? I always thought there were only 94? Oh my god, all those years ago, little areas where I thought there might be an extra secret, but then someone telling me there were only 94 exits and that I had found every one!

I must go back!

You get a star by the # when you get them all. Also all of the enemies turn into pumpkins (though that might just be for clearing the Special area...).

Yeah, I had cleared the Special area and everything. I can't believe I missed something! I'm going to watch the vid over lunch and see what it is that I missed.

You probably missed them in the Forest of Illusion. You get a point for every WAY you beat the stage. So if you beat the ghost house to connect to the first stage, but didn't beat the first stage to connect to the ghost house, you're missing a point. I was at 95 for a year and didn't know what the heck I was missing till then.

Heh, even tool assisted the guy only got 2 seconds faster than my absolute best time on Sonic 2's Emerald Hill Zone Act 1.

Man, I watched the whole video and I'm still not sure what I'm missing. It must be one of those exits that don't earn you anything, because I have all of the 'fake' and 'extra' paths. Argh, this is upsetting, I'll have to watch it again quickly and double check everything.

When I was still a kid, I thought that I had missed something in the 'small' castle next to the Forest of Illusion. The one to the bottom left and just outside of it. I always thought that in addition to the four dinos, there was another exit. If you go all the way to the end of the castle, there is a seemingly 'endless' pit of lava which stretches out to eternity. I was never able to cross it, but then again, I never knew the trick to fly for long periods of time. I still wonder if it stretched to infinity, or if there were some 1 ups or something on the other end. None of the videos tried it or showed it.

Hm... the Mario one needs an "h264" codec... looks like an updated Quicktime might be able to play it (edit: Wrong, it was QT7 for Mac, but Apple only has QT6.5 listed as available for the pc), but is there some place I could download it for other video players, like Windows Media Player (and the other software that pulls from that)? I can't imagine such an up-and-coming encoding format (it's the one the PSP uses, right?) having such an expensive codec... I'm used to most of the standard ones being free, so I feel like I'm missing something.

FYI, Matt, I don't think anything in SMW ever stretched to infinity. The game just wasn't set up for it. You would've smacked into a wall (invisible or otherwise) at the end.

But one of the routes you could've missed is in Forest of Illusion, the main level area has exits which retread already created routes. You need to get those to add to the count. (It really sucks because there's no way to tell if you've already done those or not.) And don't forget that if the stage's icon is red (I think it was), that means that one has multiple exits.

I watched the new SMW run.. i'm really don't think it will ever be bested, that was insane.
Every single thing was thought out for the quickest time possible.

If you have never flown across the gap, you HAVE missed something. If I remember correctly, there is an exit there, or at least a bunch of extra men. :)

My fastest run on Sonic 2 is about 30 mins (pretty much more luck and rote familiarization w/every level of the game than any kind of skill though).....40 mins for Sonic & Knuckles is actually kinda slow for a speedrun:)

Not to be a bother, but can any suggest what I should look for so I can watch the SMW speedrun with video? I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but Windows Media Player can't find the codec automatically, and my web searches turned up a broken link to a 5-day trial version.

thats one of the most comprehensive codec packs anywhere

try right click the video and selecting media player classic to open it

Well it doesn't work. Media Player Classic pops up a Warning window that says:

Media Player Classic could not render some of the pins in the graph, you may not have the needed codecs or filters installed on the system.

I watched TSA's MM run yesterday. His zelda skills never cease to amaze me.

I'm waiting for him to break the 5 hour mark on OoT. He's so close.

oh, I know. I talk with him on AIM occasionally. :)

... the SMRPG video on SDA is so flawed

I have my (unsegmented) time down to 3:30.

Amazing that about two years ago I thought getting under 4:45 was impossible. :lol
