Lol if I really wanted some attention, I wouldn’t post on gaf, what attention would I gain here? It’s not like the forum has had crazy activity lately, there’s very little attention to be had. Attention seeking would’ve been Reddit, FB, etc which I haven’t posted on, I’m mostly just telling close friends IRL
But what the forum does have is reasonable, realistic people (relative to other sites) which could be helpful in a situation like this. It’s all the truth and yes it’s a very bizarre story I agree with that. And that night was very traumatizing for me and in the moment I had to let the air out a bit so I made a long post.
Anyways I’ve more or less gotten over it and hasn’t really affected day to day life/work, I was really only discombobulated for one day (yesterday). The person did not have me at gunpoint, didn’t appear his intention was to be harmful/violent, it was just a “easy” robbery gone wrong for which I’m grateful looking back. Nothing was even robbed which is amazing! I guess I’m mostly just scared of what could’ve happened instead and will probably be a lot more paranoid moving forward. I’m definitely going to be more careful in checking locks every night. Landlord has been very helpful, contacted police, plenty of users have been helpful here as well which I appreciate. Don’t think I’m going to buy a gun haha because as a user said earlier, I don’t really want any random legal issue. Pet is an option tho

Honestly, and I know this is a echo from other post, if you're going to live in a city, especially a up and coming neighborhood (nice way of calling a shit area acceptable) get a gun and familiarize yourself. But if you want to take baby steps towards that, get a taser and keep it next to your bed.
I grew up and lived in a major hub city. They're cesspools at times. Some dreg will always be looking for a come up on your material goods.
Also, think about self defense classes. Have you ever been in a fight, do you know how to handle yourself in a fight?
Regardless of you feeling "over it" you will subconsciously always carry this with you. If it hit you hard the way you described (it would just about for anyone waking up to a stranger in their apartment or house). Just prep yourself to feel less like a victim and more confident. Of course this could have went terrible, that being him having a gun.
Also, invest in those Ring cameras to hook up along with your doorbell. Depending on how much you're paying for rent, float that shit towards your landlord. Honestly if your landlord isn't thinking about this, they're just a slumlord using that build not as a investment and as their person pay day each month.

OP can own a gun and choose to not use it. Not having a gun puts him at the mercy of the criminal. It wasn’t necessary in this case, in hindsight, and for all intents and purposes, by the good graces of the criminal.
I highly doubt people in here are recommending OP get a gun to not use it.
Simply making sure his doors were locked would have prevented this. A gun doesn't prevent someone breaking into your home.
