It's a rogue like card builder. Similar to slay the spire, if you want to compare( although slay the spire is far better). It is poker themed and is quite addictive until you realise build diversity is not that great. Good game but iagree that it is not goty material.
Personally would have included Helldivers 2 instead but what can you do.

I completely understand where you are coming from and you are right, but you missed one important fact.
There HAS TO BE one Indie game, there has to be to show that independent creators and low budget games can make it, they get a spotlight, this serves as encouragement to the devs and the whole indie scene in the industry and by doing that more indies will try harder, sometimes indie games can be really really good like Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Disco Elysium, Outer Wilds, Hades and Soma.
So yeah these games losing to Balatro? well they didn't, they actually lose to the other 5 nominees

It's probably my GOTY as I don't believe Erdtree should be a nomination. It's pure fun. It's creative and fresh. There are no glaring negatives to the game.

I think Balatro deserves to be there, but so does UFO50 and I would swap the DLC with Silent Hill 2.

Balatro is good, but at the same time I can easily name 5 card battler roguelikes that I believe are better. Is it the poker theme that people love? That one title track that just loops? It's amazing that a single dev managed to create it, but I don't find it a masterpiece of the genre. Not even Slay the Spire got this level of adoration.

I dont get it either. It’s just a cards game. Pixelated twist on poker. And it might be good but it’s still just a fucking cards game.
I just don’t play cards. I always found card games primitive and not that interesting. Sure I played queens blood in rebirth but it’s just ok. Only played because I had to.
Stellar blade, sh2, dragons dogma 2… all could be in its place and er dlc.
There is so much more going into game like stellar blade.
Imagine being a stellar blade dev for 4-6 years and seeing a fucking card game take your place.

What there is to judge? It’s a rogue like cards game. Pretty easy to see what it is after looking at some gameplay.
I think it’s addiction talking.
It has nothing on quality and craftsmanship, art and music of big games op talks about.
All it has is being addicting.
I can understand that because vampire survivor would be my goty at some point after putting 100 hours in it. But it’s a bad game. It’s just addicting.
We are not rewarding most addicting game here but best game.
I will take remake over a dlc. At least sh2 is its own game. And it differs a lot from original game.

As I said, don't judge it before playing it. There are literal hours long videos of strategies around the game. It's a complex game that seems simple at a glance. Its really cheap and apparently has a demo too. There's no harm in trying. As for the music, it's excellent and is a certified bop.

I didnt say it wasn't creative. It is a poker game at its core. There are hardly any fresh games nowadays especially in the AAA and AA market and it's starting to increase in the indie culture as well. Pacific Drive is one example of a truly creative game or at least I have never seen one similar to it. Also creative doesnt always mean good and creative is not always fun either.

I'd prefer a group made a separate rewards show based on merit then popularity. Of course that would narrow down the list significantly.
What sucks about it being about popularity is like watching a top 10 games of this genre in this year video and seeing that they all suck, you already know about them or they aren't even released products.
Would love it if you could discover games you've never heard of and go wow what have I been missing out on.
