I get you, but it's just poker right with some small twists. It isnt exactly "different" tbh. There are far better creative indies worthy of its spot.

Fair. But the point is, people shunning Balatro are openly admitting that production values are an essential prerequisite for a GOTY nominee. In other words, “indie shit that could run on my Nintendo Alarmo can’t be as good a game as my favorite trite AAA that I bought a current-gen system for”. Then the same people proceed to bitch that creativity is dead, that games take too long to make and cost too much, that gameplay should be king, etc, every day of the week.

This is doubly funny because TGA is a blatantly political show that rewards popularity and deliberately fuels platform wars. Its results are completely irrelevant outside of publicity and viewer’s bias. People should calm their tits and see this show as the charade it really is. People should realize that Unicorn Overlord getting a GOTY nominee won’t beget more cutesy SRPGs. It wouldn’t move the scales of the industry a single inch, and just enrage the side that doesn’t care at all about that kind of game.

Yes the GOTY awards are just a massive money laundering ad haven and most of us only watch it for the new game announcements nowadays more than anything else. As for GOTY, I'm going to tell you what I consider one eligible: a game that has quality or enjoyment in all 4 categories that I consider important which is gameplay, story, audio, tech. I will never put a game that lacks one of those as GOTY over a game that ticks all 4 and it's above good at all 4. Is it fair to games like Balatro? Probably not, but then again, I doubt the devs care about how I rate my GOTY and/or what I consider a game worthy of a GOTY. There are other categories where a game like Balatro can succeed. And as I said in a post above, just because a game is super creative, it doesnt mean its good or fun.

I couldn't be more disinterested in the game, but it's supposed to be very good and it's one of the "it" games that always get blown up.

There is always 1 indie game that gets blown up whether it deserves it or not. Not saying it's a bad thing as there's a lot of smaller games that deserve praise and attention.
