Sonic Adventure - Open Your Heart

This game definitely defined part of my childhood. Most of it works pretty well, glitches aside. Amy needed to be a bit faster moving imo, and Big of course is a mistake, but other than that there was some solid gameplay.

I always thought Knuckles and the history of the Master Emerald was serious Sonic done right. It's why I think the cartoony stories of the newer games are the wrong direction to go. People always like to pick out Shadow and 06 for how hammy and oblivious to their own writing they were, but SA and, to a lesser extent, SA2, had a nice balance of camp and seriousness that served the series well.

I completely agree. I think the main story rocked.

Knuckles' story in this game is the saddest story I've ever seen. Tikal's theme always gives me feels.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1ur_AI96d8

You sure that's not because of the great emerald powers?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukp1N4hI2Xg

I'll say it SA1 is way better than 2.

Me too. Sonic's level design is way better than 2, with more platforming. For much shit the friends get, Tails and Amy gameplay is closer to Sonic, and Knuckles and Gamma are way better than SA2's Knuckles / Rouge andTails / Eggman. Big is the only that sticks out.

I remember playing it back in the day. Visually impressive, but ultimately very lacking in terms of gameplay. It all seemed to fall apart as soon as sonic starting running full pelt. The precision and control from the 2D games was lost. That precision was never found again in the 3D games, though I never played the most recent two games.

This game is Sonic to me. I barely played a sonic game prior to it and have not played one since SA2. I have extremity fond memories of this game and really enjoyed it a lot.

Never actually beat it due to my being able to catch the damn frog in the ice level at the time but I probably played this game for hours and hours. Loved the little chao and vmu mini games too.

I should probably try and replay this but I have no idea where it has been re-released but I hear it hasn't aged well. Maybe I should keep my nostalgia blinders on and let this game stay amazing to my 10 year old self

If they released another sonic game like this, I'd be all about it day 1

Played mostly Adventure DX on PC.

I dont really know how DC versions stands up but I hella enjoyed the game, even with its little flaws.

Music was awesome, level design was awesome, Sonic design was awesome, story was awesome for a Sonic game too.

Never bothered with Gamma/Amy/Big tho.

Adventure 2 was a step down.

I don't get why Sonic can't just move like Mario. Then have some kind of "run real fast button' But also a slow-mo dedicated slow-mo trigger.

It would solve two things. 1. running into junk. 2 make it fun.
Then please do Open World. Why can't you use your speed to run up walls and stuff? Like things that are more than just a glorified on-rails raceway.

Ugh.

Best 3D Sonic to date.

Best music, story, variety, charm, soul, camp, cheese, scope, and world by far of any Sonic game in the last 22 years. I only wish Sonic Team could achieve another game of such ambition once more without completely shitting themselves and creating another 06.

That cover art still gives me chills.

Everyone has one game that made videogames into a passion for them. Ocarina of Time. Super Mario 64. A Link to the Past. For me, this was that game. I only passively watched my brother play games as a child before I got Sonic Adventure in my hands. With the story, music, locations, and gameplay, a new world was opened for me. This game served as the basis for everything I look for in a videogame to this day. Few have replicated it, including Sonic Team themselves unfortunately.

I could write a huge essay about this game and it's influence on me, but I'll just keep things short by saying without this game, I would not love videogames like I do now.

Ah. The game that started everything that is wrong with Sonic after the Genesis/Mega Drive games.

I suppose it's important because of it, yes.

I will never understand why the people in charge of this series can't look at this and SA2 and make a game that is actually on their level.

Sonic adventure, for me, is THE sonic game. When you say sonic, this is the first game I think of.

Just the sheer size, the hub worlds, the soundtrack, the set pieces, Chaos and the emeralds. I was actually a huge Mario supporter at the time, with SM64 being my "favorite" entry, and then one day my dad comes home with a Dreamcast, this and Soul Calibur. Little me was shook to the core, it took me over a year to beat this damn game.

Oh what I wouldn't give for a full remaster.
That hub really made the game for me.

Sonic 2006 is kinda like Sonic Adventure 3...lol. Except basically taking all the flaws and bugs of SA1/2 and amplifying them 50x.
I kind of wish they would go back and remake/fix it. I really want to see it, but those load times...
I almost died because I fell asleep while drinking some water during the loadtimes.

i thought this thread was gonna be about those vocal songs

i don't give a shit if they're cheesey, they're the only part of those games i still enjoy

This too. I went back to SA2's vocal theme's. The went all out for 2006, getting Akon to collaborate with Dreams Come True

The music in these games is untouchable

This. Also just an overall favorite game for me. I want to place SA1 slightly above S3&k for best sonic game. The transition from 2d to 3d and how they made an entire world and built on the lore of the emeralds (and the master emerald) was so cool. This was like a dream come true. To finally see the knuckles/sonic rivalry in full 3d?? Discovering secrets, the casino level (omfg), the light speed shoes!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's fucking go! Man... The memories...

My list would be like this:

1. SA1
2. S3&k
3. SA2
4. SCD
5. S2
6. S1
7. Sadvance games
8. Srush games

Again, great thread, op!

Dreamcast was my second console and this was the game that my parents bought with it. Oh boy it blew my mind. I was playing the genesis games before this from my sisters console and jumping from Sonic 3 & Knuckles to this was astonishing. It hasn't aged well but I can't help but to love it and play it over and over again.

I don't know if it was because I played it after 2 when it came out as DX on the GameCube or what but I really don't like this game.

I remember the first time I saw this game, it was the first I time touched a Dreamcast as well, overall mind blowing experience as a Sonic/Sega fan.

It was at a flea market and it was the demo disc with only Emerald Beach as a stage...dude was asking 5$ to play 30 minutes, which my mom paid because she saw that I was totally drooling in front of the thing. Dude at the counter was telling everyone how the Dreamcast was selling like hot cakes, that it had games just like the arcades with awesome graphics and everything.

I wanted one, I FUCKING wanted one, but my mom never bought one because 'I had many consoles already'...She sticked to her words because I only got one many years later when I entered the job market.

At least I had two friend who had one, one had both SA games and the other had it at launch with that demo disc for which we played Emerald Beach at least a thousand time (not exaggerating) and fucking ZOMBIE REVENGE, that we beat sooo many times.

Good times...thanks for the memories OP.

Respect. The level design is miles and miles ahead, and that alone is what blows the sequel out of the water.

Anecdotal evidence, but I've always run into less weird clipping bugs in the Dreamcast version than I have in all the re-releases based on the Gamecube release. I also like Sonic's model on Dreamcast more, and I'm glad everyone isn't so damn shiny.

I seriously think that, gameplay-wise, this is the only 3D Sonic game to translate 2D Sonic faithfully. The level design has that similar balance between linear and open, you can use the physics to your advantage to reach all different places (even if said physics are a bit more janky at times), and the levels had their fair share of variety.

Also, Amy's stages are great and she needed more than 3 of them. Her version of Hot Shelter, especially, is tons of fun.

Gamma's story still makes me feel sad to this day, though part of that is just his amazing theme song.

Lost world does this, a run button and a hold to move faster.

Love this game, huge nostalgia rush. The praise for the textures is spot on, I had never seen anything like those temple ruins before.

I played this recently for the first time and had such a mixed experience. This game has some really, really enjoyable fun moments and then will nosedive to hilariously frustrating. I don't really know if it's overall a good or bad game, but I did beat it and had a good (?) time with it.

When this came out, I showed everyone I could that Sonic made footprints on the beach. It was the greatest thing in the world to me. Graphics just haven't been able to impress me since this era but every big Dreamcast game, except JSR of course, was like watching a movie for me. It was just so real.

I'm in the middle of Twilight Princess right now but I might play this instead tonight.

After 18 years of Sonic Team trying to "get Sonic right in 3D" I still think Sonic Team's first attempt comes the closest at achieving the task, even for all of its other flaws and the game itself aging like milk. (Generations is a close second, but I say that more for its technical polish and having no egregious faults that drag down the experience rather than for its gameplay IMO.) The base for bringing 2D Genesis Sonic gameplay to 3D is good enough (worth noting that it's the only game to get decent rolling physics, even though they don't serve any purpose) that I think it could really open up as a Sonic game, but it takes a different path and focuses on impressive (for the time) flash and style over gameplay substance and polish.

I also greatly appreciate that it's one of the few (if not the only) 3D Sonic games with level design that doesn't feel like it's forcing the player to be always running everywhere all of the time, and actually provides some decent 3D platforming. Granted it too has its fair share of patronizing uses of dash panels, but it's nowhere near as excessive compared to later games.

Though I don't trust Sonic Team to do it justice, Sonic Adventure stands as probably the only Sonic game I think is actually deserving of a remake, especially since Sega/Sonic Team has never actually bothered to make an actual emulation or a decent port of the original Dreamcast game.

On a final note, I absolutely agree with those who say it's a much better game than the sequel. I argue Adventure 2 doubled down all of Adventure 1's flaws in the worst of ways while also streamlining it into an experience that is just awful to sit through. Two-thirds of a game that isn't even Sonic gameplay, while the one-third that actually is Sonic I find way too speed-oriented in its own good. Combined with the tonal shift in narrative and artstyle, I think Adventure 2 was the real caliber that signaled the worst of what was yet to come for future Sonic titles onward (whereas I see Adventure 1 as the smoking gun).

I don't really get anyone who says SA1 is better than SA2. That hub world was a hot mess, and so was the game's pacing throughout. SA2 was far leaner and meaner in its focused game design because of its lack of hub worlds, and things like Sonic and Shadow's levels were so much more challenging, interesting, and creative than what was seen in SA1 (City Escape, Final Rush, the night time city level, etc) And I actually liked Knuckles/Rouge levels. And the plot was actually quite interesting to follow at the time.

That ending was feelstation plus. SHADOW NOOOO

Love Sonic Adventure. Windy Valley is my ring tone. I was blown away by the demo at ToysRUs that I sold my N64 so I could come up with money to preorder it for launch day (yes, I rebought another N64 later).

Will be talking about the other characters soon but I have to comment on this element right now before moving forward.

Spread of Content vs. Gameplay Styles

In Sonic Adventure, you have 11 Stages and different characters go through them, but do they go through everyone? Nope.
Sonic: 10
Tails: 5
Knuckles: 4
Amy: 3
Gama: 5
Big: 4

Sonic, the most fun character, has the most gameplay time and content while the other characters have fewer stages to focus on their gameplay styles feeling fresh and enjoyable but not overstay there welcome.

Now, lets go to Adventure 2 and see how much content we got:
Sonic: 6
Shadow: 4

Tails: 4/5
Eggman: 4/5
Knuckles: 4
Rouge: 6

The most fun characters, Sonic & Shadow, have the same amount of stages as Sonic did alone in SA1. But you had 20 levels of the other styles. They overstay there welcome so quickly :(.

I covered this in SA2 thread but to sum things up; Speed gameplay fun but a step down from Adventure level design wise, Mech levels a downgrade from the fun/fast levels as Gama here but still enjoyable, Treasure Hunting levels have good design but horrid, horrid design choice to butcher the Emerald Radar from Adventure ruins any fun these stages could offer.

- - - - - -
My point is that Adventure was more focused on offering fun gameplay but clearly knowing "People are here for Sonic, lets give them a lot of Sonic!" and thus many have more respect for Adventure despite Adventure 2 being more polished in some areas.

I prefer Adventure 1 myself but I will get to that after I cover the other characters.

Yessss.

I like Sonic Adventure a lot. I like the adventure fields, even if they're pretty small once you get the hang of them. I also like all of the variety. I don't even have a problem with Big, though his levels are stupidly short if you know what you're doing.

I like Gamma's levels a lot better than the Tails/Eggman levels in 2, and I like all the weird shortcuts in Sonic's levels that don't seem like things you should be doing but are sometimes required for emblems.

I wish there was a whole game of Tails' SA levels. Essentially cheating your way through Sonic's levels is a lot of fun :p

A game everyone remembers the 10% great parts fondly, and completely forgets or ignores the 90% that was awful... Still worth it for that 10% though.

But only one time. It's never worth it for that double dip.

I can only give you the hub world, although I liked it. I don't know what to say about the pacing, yeah SA2 doesn't have hubs, but it forces you to do all of the "side" gameplay characters, while you could avoid that in 1.

I don't find the Sonic levels more challenging, overall the only thing that may make them more challenging is the inclusion of rails, considering in some instances you had to jump over rails with a bottomless pit down your feets. Levels are overall more speed based.

See, SA1 was more varied in it's level, some more speed focused, some more platform based, it was kind of like Sonic 1. SA2 just takes Speed Highway act 1 level design formula and puts it in almost all Sonic stages (minus Final Rush, that is basically rails: the stage, I like it though).

I also think Knuckles stages are worse for two things: they're to goddamn big, that may not be a problem if it wasn't because the radar just show you 1 of the emeralds available. You may be closer to an emeral yet the radar wouldn't show you. This was not the case on SA1.
The radar thing would be already a problem with the SA1 sized levels, but it gets worse when you consider how big the latter SA2 levels are.

About the story, SA1 tries to connect with S3&K, its still a story about the Emerald Chaos, Angel Island and Knuckles. You can feel it's a part of the MD games. SA2 just felt like a reboot.
I agree Shadow was kind of cool, although they fucked it up badly reviving him in Heroes.

Chao Garden was so friggin better in 2 though, even compared to DX.

I really loved the atmosphere, pacing and story of Sonic Adventure. It's something about everyone being in the same hub, same locations, etc.
Sonic Adventure 1's story takes place in fewer locations than Sonic Adventure 2, but it somehow makes it more memorable.
Kind of like Megaman Legends 1 compared to Megaman Legends 2.

Sonic Jam

This is the series first 3D adventure, so does it rock hard? Why, YES, it does ;).

Jun Senoue comes back to the series after work on Sonic 3D Blast and helping on some tracks for Sonic 3&K, and we see his iconic rock shine through here for a few tracks. He isn't the only one making tracks, a lot of talented composers lend their hands for the Adventure soundtrack, and it explains why its so high quality.

First, lets cover the character themes:
Sonic - It Doesn't Matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA-OXp3-qjs&index=8&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A
Tails - Believe in Myself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ROsKFmLDeI&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=11
Chukles....I mean Knuckles - Unknown from M.E: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2_JooEhcOE&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=14
Amy - My Sweet Passion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX0Hzi_b5jc&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=17

Super Sonic! - Open Your Heart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWJjjxA2hpk&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=24

These are such great tracks and they fit the characters like gloves. Love, LOVE Sonic's two themes (It Doesn't Matter and Open Your Heart), as they scream Sonic :D.

The level themes are great, as they are really varied.

Final Egg 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee3ZAc_HlWk&index=55&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A
Hot Shelter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8jmZieFDa4&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=56

The Hub Music is also nice and well composed too :).

Egg Carrier 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkUv6ugZkCA&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=61

And the last batch of music is some of the mini game/extra level stuff:
Sky Chase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekiKtx-CH-I&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=62
Sand Hill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0B2LXmBVSM&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=64

Love this soundtrack and next to Unleashed, SA2 and Colors, its hands down my favorite 3D Sonic soundtrack :). Such verity and strong compositions. It really feels like an adventure, and they did a great job capturing that here.

I have very vivid memories of having a demo disc for Dreamcast that included Sonic Adventure, Ecco the Dolphin, and I think some other things. Maybe Power Stone?

I played through that demo for Sonic Adventure a million times.

I think that the structure of Sonic Adventure 1's "scenario mode" is much more desirable than Sonic Adventure 2. It allows for a greater sense of leisure and exploration (though one might argue that the concept of levels being that adjoined or arranged in such a manner is a bit contrived, I don't think it's that bad.) The fact that some characters received so few levels (Big, Amy, much worse with the latter IMO) is glaring misstep though, and the fact that Sonic received so many is noticeable. I'd have less of a problem with Sonic being The Leader if it were something like Sonic kept his 10 levels but everyone else got 5 or 6.

Though 6 Big levels = RIP.

Plus in SA1 I liked more of the time given to each character. SA2 while not awful, made all the Hero team boring and Dark way more interesting. Probably my favorite scene in the game is when Shadow and Rouge get tense with each other, and I love how they later became friendly, but I enjoy those two as a team.

The bolded is why I respect Sonic Adventure so much; Sonic Team knew "This style gets old fast, so lets make only a handful of levels for it" vs. SA2 with 10 Treasure Hunting stages with the broken Emerald Radar X(.

Adventure respected it was a Sonic game and while I agree its noticeable, its a good kind of noticeable.

Then please do Open World. Why can't you use your speed to run up walls and stuff? Like things that are more than just a glorified on-rails raceway.

Ugh.

Like full wall-running like how Sonic moves on the ground, and both possible at the same time? Either you get Lost World, or you have to have a ton of money to sink. Sonic Team has said how expensive it is to simply make the amount of ground Sonic needs to cover to move quickly - if you were able to run on tons of walls whenever you wanted I'd imagine the costs to be insane.

Interesting thing, is that Sonic can run on walls in Sonic Adventure with little issue. If you keep your speed, you can run on walls for a long time!

Fun fact: the image of Yuji Naka wrapped in a blanket is because he apparently got horribly sick during this trip and actually spent most of the time recuperating in the hotel while the rest of the team was out sight seeing. He doesn't seem to be present in any of the other pictures, either.

Open your heart is my favourite sonic song. Absolutely love it.

Sa1 is better than sa2 for me and amazing. Love how next gen it was at the time in visuals and what they tried to do with it.

Also love the final battle as super sonic with perfect chaos. So so so so good.

It was amazing seeing it re-created in Generations. Sonic taking Chaos down WITHOUT the Emeralds O_O!? Damn....he got a lot stronger over the years XD!

Sonic Jam

This is the series first 3D adventure, so does it rock hard? Why, YES, it does ;).

Jun Senoue comes back to the series after work on Sonic 3D Blast and helping on some tracks for Sonic 3&K, and we see his iconic rock shine through here :D!

First, lets cover the character themes:

These are such great tracks and they fit the characters like gloves. Love, LOVE Sonic's two themes (It Doesn't Matter and Open Your Heart), as they scream Sonic :D.

The level themes are great, as they are really varied.

And the last batch of music is some of the mini game/extra level stuff:
Sky Chase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekiKtx-CH-I&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=62
Sand Hill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0B2LXmBVSM&list=PL285C1D7FAA11486A&index=64

Love this soundtrack and next to Unleashed, SA2 and Colors, its hands down my favorite 3D Sonic soundtrack :). Such verity and strong compositions. It really feels like an adventure, and they did a great job capturing that here.

Gotta say a lot of tracks weren't composed by Senoue though. For example, Egg Carrier and Gamma's theme were Fumie Kumatani doing. Lost World track was Kenichi Tokoi I think? and more tracks follow this trend. SA1 started the formula of having a lot of composers on the same soundtrack we see on a lot of Sonic OSTs.
