Sonic Gems Collection Mega Thread

I wonder if by any chance, Sonic Gems "Rockstar'd" this port and kept BK 1-3 hidden on the disc.

Yeah, this is what I wonder too. Like I said, reportedly both soundtracks are on the Jap disc and it chooses which to play based on your region. Maybe it's the same for BK 1-3 - if you have a Jap console, they're there. If not, they just don't show up.

Well, on GameFAQs they figured out that on the PS2 version, your system's language determines the music in Sonic CD, don't know about the GC version.

Let me just say that all of these Sonic Collections are ridiculous.

For $30, Sega should sell one big Sonic collection DVD for PS2, XBox, GameCube, and PC.
It will have literally EVERY Sonic game released, for every console/handheld, from Sonic 1 to, say, Sonic Adventure 2.

And Midway could have made a "Super Arcade Treasures" collection featuring their entire arcade history, but they wouldn't have made nearly as much money doing that than they would have by splitting them up into three or four installments

Yeah and I want a toilet seat of solid gold but that doesn't mean its going to happen.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has shown everyone the art of milking.

No. If that were the case, Sega would be re-releasing these games individually with new pastel graphics with reggae music. Then release the originals on GBA.

It seems unreasonable to complain about Sega not including everything. Sonic Mega Collection was an incredible deal when it debuted at $35 -- the entire original Genesis Sonic library (again, that's five individual games, not counting the +Knuckles variations), plus (in the US) a neat little arcade game that inspired part of the Sonic universe and an excellent unrelated platformer. It was an even better deal in the Plus edition on the other consoles at $20.

Sonic Adventure DX was nearly as good a deal -- every Sonic- or Tails-related Game Gear game as bonus games in addition to the main game. Can you imagine Nintendo including, say, all the Mario and Wario Land games with Mario 64 DS?

This one's not quite a steal, but it's pretty generous: a great platformer, a great fighter if you're an AM2 fan, a fair little racing game, two Genny platformers (one quite good, the other middling), and six Game Gear games (four of which are worth playing), all for $30.

Sega is very generous with these comps, it just doesn't put out enough of them.

Generous? Hardly.

Just because they put out these compilations doesn't make up for the many other things they do wrong with them. No Chaotix or SegaSonic Arcade? Those SHOULD be in a"rare" Sonic collection.

The way you had to unlock games in Mega Collection? Completely ridiculous.

No choice of music in Sonic CD? Ugh.

The games are still great fun, but it's hard not to get pissed at them for slacking off on so many things, when Capcom is putting its heart and soul into Mega Man X Collection.

It's not THAT great a problem, Sega could simply release one last collection containing SegaSonic the Hedgehog Arcade, Knuckles Chaotix and Nights and then we really had every single Sonic game on a Nintendo platform. Maybe they will do it on Revolution :].

That's the problem though. Who is going to buy a collection with just Chaotix and SEGASonic Arcade [possibly Shuffle?] in it? They are basically the weakest of the 16/32 bit generation, and would have been a very nice addition to the whole collection, so you would have EVERY game. Chucking them onto another set of games just seems silly.

The fact that not that many people played it could make it appealing. I doubt all 1 million+ owners of Mega Collection actually owned the Sonic games back in the day.

It wouldn't do as well as the other ones but it would still be easy money for Sega. Gems I doubt will be a million seller but I could definitely see it go past 500,000 copies for the US.

Okay so.... my PS2 Gems Collection is here and...Sonic CD is playing the japanese soundtrack for me. MAYBE, the PS2 detects my Europe region, and gives me the Japanese soundtrack that we got anyway?

If so, damn baby, you Americanos are getting the shaftings!

That's why I've written Nights (of course Christmas Nights too ^^) on the list. The last two missing Sonic titles + one of the best platformers of the 32/64 bit Generation should make many people buy such a collection. Sonic Gems doesn't have that good games too, besides Sonic CD. Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters at least in my opinion can't stand against Sonic CD, but Sonic CD will sell the Gems Collection, as well, as Nights should sell a last Sonic Collection.

Well, today is the release date, but Texas is cursed with shitty release dates (WE have to wait two days later)

Sure, we get it better than any European, this still sucks.

Why would it be any different exactly? Isn't it depending on the language you have it set to or something?

Just once, they are kind of tough, despite the UFOs being on a path going over water. Quite irritating it is.

I'm definatley getting this baby tomorrow...

So what's the full deal with these games? What is avaliable, what is not, soundtracks, region changing, other unlockable stuff? movies?

Having just credit-fed my way through Segasonic Arcade (*cough*), it's a real shame they didn't put it on. The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay (though completely broken without an analog control setup) is unique for Sonic and almost reminiscent of Monkey Ball, the music is quite good, and the whole experience is rewarding. Even one of the new characters (Mighty) is cool.

On the other hand, it only takes half an hour to get through, so there's no way it could be a headlining title on a future compilation (much less in tandem with an utter piece of crap like Chaotix... pee-yew!). Hopefully next gen Sega will do a more complete collection.

Played through the disk tonight for awhile... I bought it for Sonic Cd which sadly to say has aged badly. It is more frustrating than fun now.

Sonic Fighters on the other had is just great. I expected it to suck, but I really like it. The graphics are actually really good with super nice animations. It may look bad when looked at with a screenshot, but it motion it is ultra fluid and just a treat. The only issue with it is that I was able to button mash my way to victory all the way to and including egg man.

Once question, how do you turn super sonic in sonic fighters?

I'm going to buy this when it hits... $20... maybe...

I'm still annoyed that U.S. GC gamers managed to miss out on Comix Zone, The Ooze, Streets of Rage 1-3, and whatever-the-other-game-was. Is there any particular reason we didn't get Comix Zone and The Ooze on this compilation?

I got the Cube version today and I haven't been able to find it yet. This is the first time I've ever heard the US soundtrack and god I can't stand it. I had to pop in my Mega CD version just to listen to the redbook audio on my PC. I got it for free but I need to get another version now if some version has the Mega CD soundtrack. It's like infinitely better.

Feel free to send that free one my way if you don't like it. :)

Is this confirmed? ):

According to someone I know who makes various AR codes for Sonic Team games, yes.

SOMEBODY (12:36:38 AM): They stripped out the Japanese Sonic CD music, and the Streets of Rage games. :-(
GoodCow2K (12:37:22 AM): How do you know that?
SOMEBODY (12:37:37 AM): I ripped the game and looked?
GoodCow2K (12:37:50 AM): How big is everything?
SOMEBODY (12:38:06 AM): I dunno. That would require actually extracting the files
SOMEBODY (12:38:35 AM): I can just tell you they could fit the Japanese music if they wanted to
SOMEBODY (12:40:33 AM): (They did accidentally leave the Japanese intro and endings on the disc, but they're interleaved as the audio streams for the video files, so you cant just make a code to redirect the file to make them play)
SOMEBODY (12:41:37 AM): They also left all of the original mega collection roms on the disc....
SOMEBODY (12:41:54 AM): And the Game Gear games from Sonic Adventure DX
GoodCow2K (12:42:35 AM): Do they care at all about what they're doing?
SOMEBODY (12:43:24 AM): Supposedly you can unlock the games as 5 minute demos. I haven't found any evidence of that, but if it's true I'll just make AR codes to disable the timer

I just got the Japanese Cube version in and played around with it. I have no idea what the Japanese soundtrack is like for Sonic CD. All I can say is that the game itself is pretty confusing, with the time travel elements. Its like I had no idea what the hell was going on quite frankly. I didn't get into it much but I will later.

Sonic the Fighters is ok. I'm a guy who enjoys fighters but sucks badly at them. Sonic is pretty simple but I just didn't really enjoy it. Only played three matches and turned it off.

Sonic R I must admit, is the best game here. I had this game and enjoyed it for the PC and enjoyed it again. I liked the whole concept of the game. I'll probably be playing the game until I get everything.

There were the GG games but I didn't give a shit about them so I never selected them.

Overall: 7/10

I still like Mega Collection better and its dirt cheap too. I'd advise y'all to wait until this one gets super cheap or else you'll feel burned. I paid $50 for this game and thought it was about twice the cost of what its worth.

...

You hit a time travel marker, and if you run fast enough for a sustained period of time you warp into the past or future, with different music, graphics, and level design. How is this confusing?

I wasn't sure how the game actually works. The manual isn't in English and I don't think I ever played Sonic CD in general, let alone a Japanese version.

Well, I still think it should've been easy enough to realize that if you hit a past marker, run, there's a trail behind you, and if you do it long enough there's a short time travel sequence, followed by new graphics and music, and a "P" for past near the life icon.

There is more though...

In the past there are a few hidden things that if you destroy, it changes what the "future" zone is like. It changes it away from a post-apocalyptic zone, to a zone rife with nature... untouched by eggman.

No, I totally disagree, the Game Gear games are much worse than the GBA games. Slow and ugly ^^.

Anyone else think that the gamegear games feel more like sonic than the gba ones?
Yeah, by quite a bit. Sonic and Sonic 2 were the most "Sonic-like," but the poor speed/framerate suffered by Sonic Chaos and Triple Trouble are almost made up for by the excellent graphic style and great level design. Labyrinth is mediocre and Blast is utter garbage, but otherwise the GG games are really portable Sonic.

Game Gear for life, yo.

Sonic 1-4 on GG > Sonic Advance 1-2 (haven't played 3). Just feels like Sonic.

So I'm playing Sonic CD for the first time ever right now, after 11 years of hearing "OMG BEST SONIC EVER" and "WTF US MUSIC". I'm on ZONE 3 of the second... zone, about to fight the boss and so far the music has ranged from "cool" to "eh". But since I refuse to listen to the Japanese music (like I did with the American music) until I play the game with it, I can't compare the two.

The time travel took a few minutes to get used to, and it's not perfect, but it's a cool element. Anyone confused by it needs to stop playing video games. :P

The level design seems a bit more random than the Genesis games. Not saying it's good or bad, just different. The new animations are awesome, but I dunno wtf happened with the super spin dash (down + A).

The bonus rounds (I've done 3) are easy as hell. I'm hoping they go up in difficulty.

I have to say the only thing that really bugs me.. is that they call "Acts" "Zones" instead. heh
