Sonic Gems Collection Mega Thread

Lets share the badness around, that is, Sonic Gems Collection since its coming in one week, and I have a question, and other than Harvest Moon, the only GCN game to look foward to this month. (Unfortunatley) Lets just make this the last thread, highlight all the points and get this overwith.

So first off, lets get a recap of what we can expect.

Three Games You could get on your PC legally (Or illegally)
Sonic the Fighters (This would be the one you'd be paying for anyway)
Sonic CD
Sonic R

Six Game Gear games not see on Sonic Mega Collection + (Yes, this is the only reason why they're here)

Anyway, this is my question.

Is Sonic R going to have the 4 player mode from the PC version? All I have seen is footage from the 2 player mode, and so far, it feels like this is all we're going to get.
 
I'm getting Sonic Gems Collection just for Vectorman...But that means I have to play Sonic games for 5 hours first until I unlock it :lol It takes 5 hours of gameplay to unlock Vectorman, and 7 hours to unlock Vectorman 2.
 
I'm going to get this game because of Sonic CD the most. But I'm happy, the other two Sonic games are included, whereas I'm a bit unhappy, Knuckles Chaotix, SegaSonic the Hedgehog Arcade and Nights are missing. If these games were in it, I finally had every single Sonic (and Nights ^^) game with Jump&Run elements in it. I really hop, there will be another, last Collection containing exactly these games. The bonus games of which I hope all are included in Germany, are also quite interesting, while the Game Gear Games are totally useless to me. I hope, we don't have to play through them to get boni.
 
Sega knows that western gamers are obsessed with NiGHTS...Yet they do nothing about it. No sequel, no port to a handheld, no port to a collection. You just have to love Sega's business model.
 
Also, have you guys seen the video IGN posted for Sonic R?

There seems to be all new draw distance problems when you see Sonic fall...
 
Gamespy does good: an interview with Yojiro Ogawa, director of Sonic Team, in which he tries to explain why the compilation is so underwhelming.

Ogawa: Our primary goal with Sonic Gems Collection and Sonic Mega Collection was to create an opportunity for children that have not had the chance to experience the original Sonic titles.

Well, hey, way to alienate the nostalgia freaks who read interviews with producers on GameSpy!

Due to the amount of space the disk can hold, the U.S. version plays only U.S.-version songs, and the Japanese version, only plays the Japanese-version. We originally thought about switching the songs, but instead, we are now featuring remixed tunes from both the Japan and U.S. soundtracks in the Museum.

Bullshit. You have space for remixed versions of both but not for the Japanese music? Riiight.

The six GameGear titles on Gems represent what we felt were the best and highest quality of Game Gear titles, and were included in Gems as an addition to the six Game Gear titles in Sonic Mega Collection Plus, thus rounding out the collection.

GameSpy: What about Knuckles Chaotix (32X) or Segasonic the Hedgehog (arcade)? Will we ever see these games in a compilation?

Ogawa: There is possibility, but I think the first issue will be whether gamers will accept Sonic Gems Collection. If Gems becomes popular among consumers and they are eager for more, it may well be that we include these games.

Yeah, Nintendo is teaching the gaming industry lessons alright. The interview's an interesting read, but very mealy-mouthed. I think Ogawa knows how much better this could have been.

But who am I to complain, I'm buying it first day. Aren't you?

In the order I'm excited about the games:
Sonic the Fighters: an AM2 fighter on the Fighting Vipers engine? Yes ma'am!

Sonic CD: an improved version of the old PC port. Hell, why not. I'd rather be playing it on my Sega CD, but this compilation isn't much more expensive than SCD Sonic CD by its lonesome.

Tails' Adventure: A Tails Metroid clone. With submarine combat and all kinds of kickass bombs and other items. Play this. I own this on the Game Gear, but Sega has a really great GCN GG emulator and it'll be great to see on the TV. The missus and I will be able to play it together without crowding around a computer screen. (I realize it was unlockable in Sonic Adventure DX, but I refuse to do that idiotic Chao stuff. And, uh, I can't get gold on two of Big's levels.)

Sonic R: This game maddened me with its tank-like control and ludicrous mismatching of playable characters back on the Saturn and PC, but I'll probably spend at least as much time with it as I did with 3D Blast on Mega Collection.

Vectorman 1: Fantastic except I already own it for Genesis and Dreamcast. Ah well.

Tails' Skypatrol: Awesome little arcade-y action game, but mindblowingly difficult. It never did see release in the US on the Game Gear. The core game mechanic is really cool.

Sonic 2 GG: Easily unlockable on SADX, but my favorite of the GG Sonic titles. Incredibly mean bastard of a game... the first boss is incredibly devious. I remember nearly smashing my month-old Game Gear because the bastard just wouldn't die no matter how many times I hit him. Heh.

Sonic Triple Trouble: Slow framerate, but another solid Sonic and Tails game. I really liked the personality of the game -- Knuckles and Nack (or whatever he was called in the US one) were amusing foils.

Sonic Spinball GG: Hey, it was lots of fun back then and amusing on the road, but I don't know why you'd play it on your TV when you could be playing the Genesis version.

Vectorman 2: Bleh.

Sonic Drift 2: This series was a bad idea all around. The first was bad and this is more of the same.

Even if Nights were included, it's likely people would complain Xmas Nights isn't there, that Burning Rangers is missing and that the 3D museum in Sonic Jam would have been nice too. :)
 
Well, a Sonic Team compilation with NiGHTs, Xmas NiGHTs, and Burning Rangers would be ideal, yes :)

What this release should have had is:
Sonic CD
Sonic the Fighters
SegaSonic Arcade
Sonic Jam 3D world
+ 6 Game Gear games.

I'd say most Western gamers do not know what Nights is, or at the very least, do not care about it.

The obsession has to do with a tiny minority of gamers. Among those, some may be fans of the original, the rest are a bunch of gamers who purposely skipped the Saturn generation and only now want to catch up.

Quoted for truth. And that small minority can easily buy themselves a Saturn and an original, sealed NiGHTs with the 3D control with minimal effort.

Nights was great for its time, but putting such a game on a pedestal is setting yourself up for disappointment.

I was excited when I finally got to play Sonic Arcade, nearly a decade after its release, but it's really an average game when all is said and done.
 
I'm buying this for Sonic the Fighters alone. I've waited nearly a DECADE for this to be brought to consoles and it's finally happening.

I'll be Play-Asia'ing the bastard. Although I'm excited to play Sonic R and CD, skipping on the chance to play SOR is criminal, especially if you own a Freeloader.

Or you could buy the originals on Genesis... :)

In preparation for next Tuesday my two currently installed systems are my GCN and my Genny/Sega CD/32X monstrosity. Good times.

FWIW, this game was made by Ancient. Y'know, the guys who made SOR2 and Beyond Oasis. :)
 
I'm surprised they haven't added the Master System versions of the GG games for the hell of it. the first boss in Sonic 2 MS is MUCH easier than the GG version. LOTS more room, PLUS the ball bounces exactly the same way each time, no "higher" or "lower".

WWE fans will probably enjoy that new game too, and I still hope for Geist (although I'm not getting my hopes up, heh).

But yeah, I'll be picking up Gems on the day it comes out, even though I'm extremely disappointed with it. But if it has good sales, perhaps Sega will eventually release a "true" Sonic "Mega" Collection.

I've asked this a million times, but again, does anyone know how Sonic the Fighters is being done? Is it being re-written for the Cube or does it use a Model 2 emulator?
 
re-written for the PS2 and Cube I believe (dont forget the PS2 version for europes and japans!), due to the inclusion of a Tag Team battle mode not found in the arcade original.

However there was once rumour of a PC version of Fighters, so this may just be utilising that old code and finishing it off.
 
I wouldnt be suprised if Sonic R was only 2 player due to the PS2 release (Lazy cocks at Sega, Sonic Team, AND Travelers Tales)

People at E3 mentioned that at least the PS2 version was emulated, as it had the same wonky texturing and frameskip as PS2 VF2. The GC version is suppossedly flawless, so it's either rebuilt or using a better emulator.

according to some early importers, its the US soundtrack! hahah, oh sega! so its just a lazy port of the PC version after all. superb.

Oh and Bare Knuckle / Streets of Rage games have to be unlocked through the usual retarded methods of: Play at least 15 hours, Play at least 50 times total and Play at least 100 times total.

Jesus Christ, why is Sega so fucking STUPID?

They need to take a hint from a company that gives a shit about its fans: Capcom.

They reached out to Mega Man fansites recently, asking fans to write into the site with ideas/what they want to see in Mega Man X9/Command Mission 2, and the site would then forward them to Capcom.

This is only after the successful fan input they did with the X Collection, asking fans what they wanted to see in it through fansites, and THAT was only AFTER Capcom already said they were redubbing/rescripting X6, redubbing X4, maybe redubbing X5, putting in new SNES remixes, and thinking about optional dubs for X1-3 on SNES.

Yeah, so tip to Sega: be Capcom. ):
 
Well the intro is definitely Sonic Boom, but maybe the level music is the japanese? I don't know myself, plus this is only the PS2 version. I'll be playing the PS2 version myself when my copy materialises in a day or so. Theres always a chance the GC version might be different: BELIEVE!

That's strange, though, because the interview linked just above said Japan gets the Japanese music, and the US gets the US music.

He's talking about the PS2 version. From what i've been reading the PS2 version is almost completely in English. Which is very strange since PlayAsia has a pic of the Japanese GC version and its game menu is in Japanese while the PS2 version is in English for some reason. It doesn't really make sense.

I've heard talk that the PS2 version of the game actually does have both soundtracks on the disc, and upon booting, it checks what region your PS2 is and uses the appropriate one (a la the voices on Sonic Heroes).

This is info from a (Sonic CD obsessed) friend however, so he could be reading bullshit and praying it's true or something.
 
Pretty much the only major difference is that the past music is turned into regular CD music for the PC version instead of being a large sample stuck in the game's sound libraries as they are in the Sega CD version (Which COULD explain why the past music remained intact in US distribution; Sega's laziness)

Two more days before Sega puts a cigarette in my damn eye...
 
New ads for a number of stores came out and...

Not only did Sonic NOT show up in some of them, certains stores like Best Buy and Target dont even have Gems on their website.

sounds like another limited release. They are not going to destroy this Sonic-Simpsons surplus (Sonic Gems and Simpsons Season 6) I'm trying to get working on the 16th
 
Limited release? Damn, that's a mistake. It'd be one of the top selling GC games this holiday season if it had even a tiny bit of advertising.

Dunno what you're talking about. Capcom has done very little wrong lately.
 
I can't say for sure, but I'd suggest Gamecube, since there's a better chance of Sonic the Fighters running without hitches there than on PS2. (Somewhat more powerful hardware, and Sonic Team usually tunes their games to run best on Gamecube.)
