SONIC MANIA: Mirage Saloon Zone KNUCKLES Gameplay (No commentary+DAT MUSIC)

Love everything from what i've seen so far! This is such a huge memory lane trip for me, as back in the days SNES was way to expensive and the only alternative was MD and Sonic. God i miss those days, sitting at home in front of the old TV on a cold winter night and playing Sonic till the morning!

Hoh-Lee DAMN, that looks smooth and amazing! I wonder what the wireframe rings are... I guess special stages that just aren't implemented yet, but it'd be cool to have the wireframe stay in-game in some form.

Wow this level (and game) look amazing. It absolutely reminds me of playing Sonic 3 (I believe that was the 1-Up sound I heard in the playthrough) and I love it. This is coming out in 2017 right? Would be a nice surprise if they confirmed a Sonic 3 sprite like one of earlier posters stated (my favorite design of Sonic!).

Day 1 on PS4.

That music is gorgeous! Just as good as the original music for Studiopolis which is also sublime. Honestly both levels are a delight to watch and both will fit well alongside whichever other classic levels are included in their remixed form. I love how things are still hidden in these videos too; there have been no other bosses shown and only act two of Mirage Saloon has been seen so far (As well as only act one of Studiopolis... though the big bingo tumbler in the first trailer is possibly an element of act two...). Also the special stages are still a mystery. I've been sold on this since July but every new piece of media warms my heart. I just hope this game sells well enough to warrant more games in this style.

Someone here said he hopes Knuckle's sprite work isn't done. What was wrong with it?

The level looks like good Sonic fun. I think the music here was alright/good but Studiopolis's is much better.

The walking animation cycle is awkwardly stilted and the running animation is a bit simplistic and lacking in motion/fluidity compared to the others. The victory animation seems a bit awkward too. It's like his snout and eyes are distorted. The fist pump seems like it's lacking animation frames. When he hits a spring and spins, it looks a bit flat compared to the others. It also seems like a different art style completely compared to Sonic's or even Tails', which looks somewhat unfinished too but in a better state. I mean, if this is it, I'm not losing any sleep, but I don't think its as meticulously detailed as Sonic's sprite.

Looking amazing. Though funny thing the one thing I think is the weakest aspect of Mirage Saloon is the music. It's not bad, but it sounds too much like Studiopolis imo.

I kind of agree. It's the beat in particular that seems too similar.

Edit: Oh the fist pump animation cycle is a nod to the Knuckles in Sonic 2 title screen.

Invincibility music still sounds off.

I don't like it.

Other than that, gameplay looks solid and same with the BGM.

Similar chord progressions.

I'm already thinking this has a good shot at being in the running for my GotY of 2017. There is almost no way this game isn't going to turn out to be absolutely wonderful and something very special.

They are nailing everything with this game so far. Visuals, animation, MUSIC (!), physics, momentum, level design... all of it. The hype... the hype.

Sprites give me a Chaotix vibe, and Chaotix nailed the visuals/music IMO, so I don't really see the issue there. I guess Sonic is a bit on the light blue side, but beyond that, it's all good.

EDIT: I hope we get maybe 7 remixed zones and 5 brand new. 12 total is a good number.

I really,
really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really,
hope this sells well.

You can turn off the CRT Filter, it's been stated multiple times, even in the previous video that woman said it's optional but they're just showing it off in this preview. There's also more filters, which we have yet to find out.

I've said this elsewhere but what really makes Mania work for me is that it feels like a love letter to Sega platformers in general and not merely a Sonic nostalgia throwback. The tweening pistol cannons you launch from are very reminiscent of Bug! or Ristar, the bouncy piano keys...the game very much realizes the idea of "a Sonic paltformer for the Saturn" in more ways than just graphically. Not to mention the little Daytona Hornet and Streets of Rage references in Studiopolis, the Spinball sound effects...it's a labor of love, it's a classic throwback, but it's got identity outside of "it's just like the old Sonic games" and that's why it clicks with me so much.

The whole philosophy of "higher the path, the harder, but faster" has been a Sonic series staple but never really felt distinct and emphasized until Generations for me. Mania feels like it noticed some of the things Generations did best with the Classic stages and drove the point home. It legit looks like the best stage design the series has seen to me.

Nah, the lowest path is always the hardest.

The higher path is easier and faster, but tricky to stay on without falling to a lower level.

At least that's the philosophy the classics had.

For those saying the music sounds un-Genesis like, that's kinda the point, IF Sonic continued on the Saturn, it would've used the CD style, which it did for games like Sonic R, etc. So naturally, Mania is taking heavy influence from Sonic CD as well as Saturn era games for the music.

I haven't been paying much attention to the game, but I really do adore what I've seen of it thus far. I've no doubt that it's going to be my first Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles on the MegaDrive.
