But what is Spring Yard Zone? Was it an amusement park that Robotnik was using to disguise the construction of Scrap Brain?

Robotnik really likes amusement parks and gambling. A lot of zones across the series make much more sense if you just accept it as a character quirk.

Boweser does too, well amusement parks

It is one thing to have rips of the Sonic Mania music and put them up on Youtube, it is another to make them play longer than a stage would :v

For anyone who still cares about this show, sonic boom

Vector... cameo? A robot who changes into other things changed into... I guess boom vector. All you could see is like head and shoulders. Look like he had like a leather jacket and tattoo, shit was weird

Bit of a silly question but I wanted to talk about the 'chronology' of the Zones in Sonic 1.
So we know these are the Zones in Sonic 1
Green Hill
Marble
Spring Yard
Labyrinth
Star Light
Scrap Brain

Now Marble being ancient ruins that Sonic finds upon passing through Green Hill is fine.
But what is Spring Yard Zone? Was it an amusement park that Robotnik was using to disguise the construction of Scrap Brain?
I can see Spring Yard being over Labyrnith (which is where Robotnik found a Chaos Emerald), and it would explain why a section of Labyrinth Zone is under Scrap Brain (Act 3).

Far as Star Light Zone is...uh it's some kind of pocket dimension Robotnik hurled Sonic into to keep him out of his hair.

EDIT: Yo this is one menacing Death Egg

Dunno if you ever noticed, but
if you look at the time of the day/daylight as you progress through the zones, it shows Sonic 1 takes place during a period of ~24 hours. GHZ - morning, MZ - day, SYZ - evening/dusk, LZ - probably late evening, SLZ - night, SBZ - dawn.

Also, in the 8-bit version of Sonic 1 the progression makes a tad more sense due to the level map you see between acts.

Quick question
Was there any major difference between Game Gear and Master System music?

I did not notice that :O
...but yeah I really liked the map in Sonic 1 8-bit.

Weird, I wonder how the system would have fared with an exclusive sonic game instead of say nights.

Hard to say. Probably not much better than it did, really. It was just too expensive, too hard to code for, and had too little major third party support.

I don't think there was any difference in music. The only differences between MS and GG I remember are some backgrounds having a little more detail on GG, and some levels being slightly altered.

Another fun fact about Sonic 1 8-bit was that it was the first game in the series to introduce the idea of Robotnik having an airship base.

Oh neat, I didn't realize there was a Sonic community thread.

I'm currently replaying the Adventure games to see if they still hold up. SA1 does (at least so far).

Yep. He even has a room full of slot machines and a couple rides in the Egg Carrier in SA1.

Apparently, I wasn't the only one that caught that the background/foreground gimmick in Metallic Madness Zone 1 wasn't an unused X-Treme gimmick! With the Metal Sonic fight taking place on top of a large building, I think that was a reference to X-Treme, too.

metal4.jpg

Also, for a more recent reference, the funnel sounds in Studiopolis Zone are taken from the funnels in Casino Palace Zone in Sonic Advance. And even more recent, the frequency of the "Technical Difficulties" buzzing after beating Studiopolis Zone's Act 2 is a recreation of the buzzing that hampered the Sonic 25th Anniversary Stream where Mania was revealed.

'Sup, rest of GAF that just wandered in from Gaming. You've got questions (about Sonic the Hedgehog), we've got answers (about Sonic the Hedgehog).

And please, someone get Neiteio a copy of S3&K already.

With all the hype and positive words said about Sonic Mania, I'm seriously considering picking it up. However, I have no idea how to play a Sonic game.

They've always been confusing to me. Are you trying to acquire and hang onto as many rings as possible, or do they not really matter outside of lives?

Are you trying to complete levels as fast as possible or are you supposed to regularly stop and explore? The focus on speed in the game is a little confusing to me, as it seems like you'll be quickly ushered through gigantic parts of the game in the name of speed. Are you expected to kind of backtrack and explore the area that you just zoomed through?

Should you be seeking out every TV to smash? What rewards do these garner? What about enemies? Should you be trying to kill them all or is it okay to just run past them?

What do you need to do to acquire the giant ring (no idea if that's what it's called)? What makes it invisible/unattainable and what unlocks the ability to acquire it? What's the benefit of acquiring the giant ring?

I have other questions, but I guess I'll just leave it at that for now.

I know Sonic can be very confusing but from my years of studying the franchise I believe if you hold right you will automatically win.

I hope that helps and god bless.

Rings don't matter beyond keeping you alive.

Explore and take it easy the first time, master it later. Exploring is never really required, but it's often rewarded by getting you access to special stages to get Chaos Emeralds or powerups that you can use to effect the level or help you access other routes.

TVs are just powerups, enemies are obstacles for you to manage however you want. Sometimes they can even be used to boost your jump to get to other areas.

The giant rings take you to special zones. It becomes inaccessible if you've already used that ring and are just replaying the level. After beating the game (with or without the Emeralds) they should come back for you to try again. After collecting all 7 Emeralds, they're just a free 50 rings.

Edit: I think this may have been a bamboozling thing. Happens when you never go to the community thread and don't recognize people easily. =P

So I just need to gotta go fast? Awesome. Can I play as Shadow in Mania? He is so cool

Why I never, do you seriously think I would copy an OP from a silly thread about not understanding Sonic and posting it here in jest?
I would.

tbh i just skip threads like that because i've read enough "sonic is fundamentally bad game design" posts for one lifetime

Definitely. It's hard to remember one of many of those types of topics or posts. At least Mania has solid impressions, even if apparently positive topics for new fans get shuffled off here =P

Mania is generally lovely. My only real complaint is the length of the final zone. Everything else is just minor stuff.

As for questionable design in Sonic games, the 2D games have generally always been fine. Sonic 2 GG, CD and Advance 2 and 3 are the only ones I can think of that have some debatable level design.

And, well, Sonic Blast for GG. But I pretend that one never happened.

Honestly, my biggest hope if there's a sequel to Sonic Mania is more Game Gear stuff. I want Sunset Park, Tails getting to use the Sea Fox, the hang glider...

Between the Genesis trilogy, Game Gear exclusive levels, stuff from Genesis era spinoffs (Spinball, Chaotix) and unused stuff from prototypes... there's still so much material that Taxman and team didn't even use for Mania.

Not the hang glider, those things were rage fuel in Sonic 2, haha. Everything else sounds fine.

If not the hang glider, what about rocket shoes?

The Game Gear games were awesome.

Oh, man. I forgot about Spinball. Some of those stages becoming full levels would be a childhood dream come true. I really hope SEGA gets them to do more of these. There's so much old/lost content that's begging to be re-explored, and the new stages are all A+.

Mania is just so incredible. I'm so happy that a genuine sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles finally exists and it's not too far off the mark either! It's the only game I've been playing since it came out, despite finally getting a Nintendo Switch last Saturday. Just don't have the drive to start a new playthrough of Breath of the Wild on the Switch (already played it on Wii U), or play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with friends (despite MK8 being one of my favorite games of 2014).

I even played Sonic Mania coop with my friend who isn't into Sonic (he accepts my obsession with Sonic, and has played Sonic games in the past, but he's not really much of a fan) and even he had fun. That said, I noticed that there are quite a few oddities when playing in coop in the person playing as Tails (which was me) flies on top of a floating animal capsule at the end of an act. Some stage/act transitions happen way later then they're supposed to.

tbh i just skip threads like that because i've read enough "sonic is fundamentally bad game design" posts for one lifetime

Yeah, tell me about it.

Famitsu is going to have some sort of stream on Sonic Forces (Along with Shin Megami and Hitman) tomorrow at 8pm JST. Not sure if it's anything new or just an old playthrough.

Insofar as the Mania team counts as Sonic Team, sure.

Paul Veer (Pietepiet) and Falk Au Yeong (Falk, obviously) were on the pixel art and audio teams, respectively.

Been playing Cortex Strikes Back on the twinsanity collection. I don't know if my depth perception has gotten worse or if I just always died this much in the original, but I am going through lives left and right.

2 is still the best of the bunch. Hands down.

That sonic mania denovo or whatever stuff sucks

On other sonic game related topics. Anyone else gotta feeling, someone is gonna leak stuff for forces soon, and its gonna be like... really bad. Because It actually leaked before and a bunch of various communities went " nah that's stupid" and it was true. I got this bad feeling that like soon someone's gonna be like

" A bunch of dank horshit happened during the development, here's accounts of said dank horseshit, they only worked on this game for like a year and a half, and this game glitchy AF"

I got a bad feelin

What the heck is the deal with the Sonic Movie DVD? They use to be somewhat available, but now it's near impossible to find a copy. There's sellers on Amazon selling used copies for 200+.

If it is indeed that rare, this makes the loss of 2 copies of the film (seperate boxarts as well) to an apartment fire all the more saddening.

Isn't it out of print? A.D. Vision doesn't exist anymore.

I liked the trailer.

EDIT: actually I wonder if I have a copy tucked away somewhere... feels like I would but it's been a while since I've scoured my old DVD collection

Being out of print makes sense, but the prices are still insane. Maybe we'll see another distributor pick up the rights? For a decade I would see copies every now and then at places like Best Buy. I got my first copy when it first came out here in the states. DVDs were all super expensive, but somehow I convinced my parents to buy me it. I would watch the Sonic Jam trailer constantly.

The movie itself is fun, albeit somewhat of a oddity. Art style is great and it's definitely a fun take on the story, but the voice acting is nails and the addition of a human-like female interest is questionable.
