Sony and the exclusive F1 license

Who else thinks that Sony has almost destroyed F1 games by getting the exclusive license and releasing sub par games? There used to be great F1 sims available on PC. At least they could try to do a GT levels of realism and have a decent production budget for the game along with an online setup. EA did much better things with the license.

that's not true, any developer can do a F1 game, what sony has is the pilot names, official cars, etc, but that doesn't mean other company can't make a F1 game with fictitious pilots/cars.

As far as I know, there are other F1 games, and all they do is use last year's teams and names. I would say that's still F1 game...

no, there was f1 challenge 99-02, since EA already had the license during those years. from 2003 and on, there haven't been any f1 games except sony's mediocre ones.

I don't think they are mediocre. They are just fine for the F1 crowd.

The mod community is huge for F1 challenge. It still gets regular updates for each season. The most current mod for F1c is Rh2004 which uses all the car liveries and drivers from last years season and new tracks including bahrain and china.

This is so untrue. You have no idea how hardcore the racing sim community is. Some ppl still swear by GPL because no one has even come close to the realism of the physics in that game.

i know that, but still it's not the same thing since they do not have access to the real car/track data.

Console F1 games have suffered since early 2001, even when both Sony and EA had the license, it kinda sucked. I still have F1 2001 from Sony, and that game was lacking in many ways. IMO, the cars just didn't feel good. The last F1 game I liked was F1 CE on the PS1. I think Bizarre Creations was behind that one, or Psygnosis. Either way, it was a great game. Since then, I've had issues with every F1 game made for the console. They should let Polyphony Digital do the game one year, but they're bigger than the F1 license. PEACE.

I thought in 2002 or 2003 that it would be a great idea to expand Polyphony Digital and have them develop a few games per year.

Year 200X1: GT 200X1, GT: F1 200X1, GT: WRC 200X1
Year 200X2: Gran Turismo: Street Racing, Formula 1 20X2, WRC200X2
e.t.c. e.t.c.

I believe they should make the F1 games first of all. Secondly they should have expanded Gran Turismo. Rally in GT is extremely small, completely underdone. Then the gameplay in Gran Turismo doesn't encompass other parts of racing other than circuit. I wouldn't mind a street/highway/mountain Gran Turismo racing game. And it would mean more Gran Turismo instead of less. Numerous GT expansions have been released and yet nothing to the size of GT3.

I would like
Polyphony and Evolution studios to make a GT: WRC series.
Polyphony and Liver Pool Studios to make GT: F1

And if not both teams making the game, then AT LEAST share technology for goodness sakes. Just look at the way that Naughty Dog and Insomniac make each other better. Imagine how Polyphony could improve Liver Pool and Evolution Studios. SCE would be a much higher quality development company if they pooled resources and had a better governing system.

Well they don't really have to worry about rally, since evolution studios are very talented and WRC series is very good. Don't know if they ever get released in the US though..

The don't get released in North America. Bam did release the original WRC for PS2 though. It is regularly released in Japan by Spike. I guess Rally isn't popular enough outside of Europe to warrant official release.

I don't think they'll ever seperate the racing sections out of GT. They're going to keep them all in 1 game. That's what really seperates the series from everything else. So many racers just focus on 1 type of racing while GT is about taking alot of forms of racing and putting them all in 1 game. Each new GT they add atleast 1 new racing style to it. With GT2 they added rally, with GT3 they added F1, and with GT4 they're adding drifting and drag racing.

I could see them sharing technology with over Sony developers, but I don't see them suddenly doing GT: WRC, GT: F1 stuff.

I don't mean to seperate the sections.

You keep them 1 game in a normal GT release, but then expand outwards.

GT for the most part is all circuit racing, and then has a small rally section, and the f1 section is a joke, hardly what i would call diverse.

I am happy about the recognition they are giving drift, but drag racing is stupid, i'd rather spend my time doing the super speedway, with there being no clutch in the racing wheels it's even more pointless to have drag.

They haven't been adding enough to the games, and so much time goes by, it's infuriating to see games like GT: Concept come out...

If they're going to put the time in making a big rally mode why not just leave them all in GT? Why not just add all of that into GT instead of breaking off into another game? The improvement between GT2's rally and GT3's rally mode were huge, and I expect the same for GT4 with the rally mode and the F1 mode. Polyphonys goal is to make the ultimate racing game, by breaking them all the modes up into different games that'd ruin the whole concept of GT.

I think one of GT5's racing additions will be superbikes since Polyphony was testing them out on a track earlier this year.

I don't think you understand what I am saying.

I mean after making GT, you go on to make these other games.

After making Gran Turismo you go out and use the engine to make other games with other elements.

I understand that. What i'm saying is why split the team off to make a different game when you can just have them stay on and add that new game to the next GT? Essentially there's no real need to make seperate racers when GT has them all. They can just improve on each section with each new GT like they have been doing.

You know what I heard? There's a chance that Sega may produce a successful football game without any of the player or team licenses from the NFL! *sigh*
