Sony be damned: My 2003 PS2 is breaking down

It's the nightmare all over again... a malfunctioning Sony game console! (my PSX broke down back in the day)

Some of my PS2 games are currently suffering from abnormal brief pauses whenever load-intensive sequences start.

Compare this to my perfectly functioning launch day Gamecube, I question the mass consumer's choice of allowing inferior hardware to be the market leader (and yes i realize i'm also part of the problem).

I'm currently on my third. And I take good care of my shit, and I've never had any other system ever have any problems in the past 16 years. What the hell do they make these things out of?

My psone and ps2 are the originals. I don't get why everybody elses' sony consoles poo out.

My launch window PS2 is still alive and kicking though it did sound like it was about to explode anytime I booted up MGS 3. I decided to play it safe and just pick up a slimeline PS2 before my original PS2 really did blow up. I got a few DRE's with the old system but to fix it, I just cleaned out the very little bit of dust that would accumulate in the vents. My launch day Gamecube though has only given me one DRE on RE 4 and Killer 7. Damn Capcom games. Only had my Xbox for a little over a year now and the only problems that have come from playing on it are due to the games as opposed to the system. Got to love that Samsung drive.

Anecdotal evidence is fun! Both my DCs broke down, and so did my Xbox, yet my two PS2s work perfectly. What the hell do they make those system out of?

My PS1 never ever broke down, despite being a close to launch unit and getting a good 6 or so years of constant, constant playtime. Of course, that's not counting that I had to return the one I bought originally because something was misaligned inside, and caused it to scratch discs. But the one I got when I returned it the next day has never broken down.

I had a launch PSX for 4 years ... it skipped, VERY occasionally towards the end ... but still was fine 99% of the time. I mainly replaced it to get the version with the light show (and *cough* a pro-action replay that was compatible with that model *cough*)

My PS2 is launch also ... no problems with it so far.

yeah mine too (my PS2 is even a release day special). I never have any problems, and I even dropped the PS2 from about 1.5m!

Interestingly enough, the only system I have ever had "break down" on me was my Gamecube a few months ago. But it wasn't GCs fault. My stupid dog was running around the couch while I was playing Pikmin 2, and on his second pass he knocked into the second player controller wire and pulled the system down slamming against the ground. That knocked it up good, didn't work after that :(

THAT is why wireless is the future, folks! Wireless for the win!

Damn, that sucks. How far did it fall?

I had a friend spill beer all over his GC and controllers, and it still worked. Unfortunately, the release lever to open the top got a little messed up, as did his Z-buttons. It was a pain in the ass to get the lid to open to change games.

Too late...

My PSX died and so did my PS2 (until I went in myself--now it will run DVD games). Gamecube is still running perfectly, even with all the countless hours of Smash. I expect my PS3 to die as well.

Hey, has anybody's ps2 slimline given them troubles? Maybe it just takes sony 4 years to work out their initial hardware kinks?

It didn't fall far, like a foot. It was the force with which the dog pulled the system that made it break, me thinks. The thing went SLAMMING against the floor.

Nope, but if the problem is heat like someone mentioned, i'd say the system needs more vents.

:lol

No, he's right. PS2 is one of the most easily fixed systems ever. Usually it just takes a bit o' cleaning or something. dark10x knows the methods best, you should ask him.

My 2001 PS2 has yet to have any problems. My girl is strong!

If you're adventurous you could try taking your system apart (not hard 8 case screws and 4 small screws for the DVD drive) and cleaning the laser lens with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab. If you hear a bit of a grinding sound as if the laser can't move to access a part of the disc (yeah, vague I know), sometimes lubricating the rails that the laser moves on does wonders. I've had great success with these two fixes.

Hey, why did you think there are constant high sales numbers for the PS2 every single week from Japan? :lol

I own five PS2's

Two US launch systems (my dad has one of them), both still work.
Japanese launch system, still works (I hope).
2003 model with the built-in IR port for the remote and the quieter fan.
Slim PStwo (my primary player/DVD player now).

Just buy a PStwo. They're great and the DVD playback on it is excellent (and ProgScan).

My PS2 broke before that class action lawsuit and I tried to fix it myself thus voiding the warranty. I bought a new one. Actually I've bought 2 so I'm Sony's bitch.

I haven't had a problem with ANY of my consoles be it a Sega, Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft made product.

Machines breakdown, its a fact of life but I think that people still are treating these delicate peices of hardware like we used to do with our SNES's. I keep my equipment on the shelf and I don't have any issues.
