The PlayStation 3 looks set to be the first of the next-generation consoles to take a bow in front of the world's media - albeit only by a matter of hours, with Sony announcing that its pre-E3 conference will take place just ahead of Microsoft's.

Sony will hold its event on a sound stage in Sony Pictures' complex in Culver City, just outside Los Angeles, at 15.00 PST on Monday, May 16th, and is expected to show off the next-generation PlayStation for the first time at this event.

Three hours later at 18.00 PST, Microsoft will kick off its own event in downtown Los Angeles, where it is expected to finally take the wraps off the next-generation Xbox, currently known only by its development codename Xenon.

The scheduling is threatening a headache for media and industry types who need to attend both events, since if the Sony event runs on for a while it could be quite tough to get from Culver City back into downtown LA in time for the 6pm kick-off with Microsoft.

Sony's plan is clear. Get all the media drunk, so that they can't make it back in time for the Microsoft conference.

Isn't the idea of going first in the PC the same idea as being the first console released? AKA. Get everyone's attention on how hot you are so that they don't really care about the next guy in line?

Seems to me like Sony is going first because they have something that they feel is going to blow everyone away.

That works if you feel MS blew everyone away the last couple years with their PCs.

... and the GAF Server crashes at 14:58 PST. :D

I dunno, I think the last couple of years were all pretty pathetic in terms of PCs. Once the systems were released it's just been blah blah this addition, blah blah this software. The system PCs are the real deal...and well whenever Nintendo announces a Zelda game too.

I think you just found out that you're in the "doesnt need to know" group :p

I actually think that gamingindustry is reporting/recycling what was written on this forum a couple of days ago. My information is straight from my PR rep, but they could have mixed up the dates. Sony loves me, they would never abandon me... :D

So, Sony is stealing S-E's concert audience? Maybe it is a pre-emptive move to spite S-E in before the MS buyout announcement . :P

Yeah I wrote about this yesterday. Funny that GI made the same time mistake I did. I got my Msoft invite in the mail after posting my item and noticed that while the pre-registration for the presser starts at 6:30 p.m., not 6 p.m., the actual event doesn't get under way until 7:15 p.m. And Culver City is only about 10 miles from downtown, so probably not a huge deal just a pain in all of our asses.

Coolest Press Invitation Ever

Well now apparently MS has moved its presentation forward 3 days, which would possibly put it in line with an announcement on the 12th. Which would make it before the PS3 debut, so we're back to square one really.

At which time is the Nintendo conference???is it the last one?

I believe it is, just like last year. Wondering if there's another 'Reggie-lution' or not... Speaking of which, if it's like last year, Sony would go second, show their long and dull PPS files again and show the PS3, or some form of the PS3. MS will go for the games, and especially the Xbox 360 (I believe the invite crescente showed pretty much confirms it, with the revolving thing and all) and Nintendo will show some more Zelda and perhaps a glimpse of their 'Revolution', only not to have as much thunder as last year.

I don't know anyway, as much as I like to see what next-gen is going to be about, I really really can't find myself anticipating it that much. Sure, next-gen is fine, but every bone in my body says it's really too soon. I just can't get excited about it... But hey, that's just me though. :p

This battle to be first is reflective of what the two companies think of Nintendo -- a non-threat to their next generation plans. ;)

True, but really, can you blame 'em for not giving a shit? The industry knows Nintendo is insane and will do whatever they want, regardless of the competition and market realities. Microsoft's going after Sony. End of story.

Someone at sony must be working around the clock to prepare his powerpoint presentation in time for the conference :lol

Even with big unveillings like PSP and soon to be ps3, sony presentations bore me to tears, they need to realize that they arent talking to shareholders at e3, but gamers.
