Sony shuts down Bluepoint Studios

It's frustrating when Sony and PS5 are the most successfull and profitable generation of playstation to date. Brag about profits and sales, the layoff people. It's pretty class behaviour these days. Even more so when you see how they are spending their money on failing Gaas games.

Worse generation by far and the lesson Sony has learned is they don't need that many first party games to rake in the cash. When is enough in terms of making billions for these big companies. Banks are the worst.

Maybe this is how they will cover the RAM costs.

Bungie better knock next month out of the fucking park.

It's the harsh reality of most industries unfortunately, if you don't bring in enough money for them they'll see no reason for them to keep you around

After what they did with SoC and DS i thought that would be their role, to merge nostalgia with new tech, to bring back what made Playstation so good in the past.
But no, here's a new extraction shooter, because maybe one will eventually bring in some revenue, maybe.

You're all rightfully complaining about Sony Computer Entertainment.

But in the End nothing will change, most People will still buy PlayStation Consoles and Games and act like nothing happened as always, Sadly!!!

I thought it was a great acquisition. With all the remasters and PC ports, it's hard to imagine that Bluepoint was anything but misused. Shocking news.

Jesus wept. What self respecting independent would ever want to team up and be taken under the wing of Sony? Things are no longer the same.

I agree. I don't understand why they couldn't just keep remastering old Playstation titles. Regardless, Blueprint was not a big studio. Only 70 people. They were never in position to release a AAA game. I am not overly upset about it as a consumer

I was playing the SOTC remake a couple years ago and I remember still being completely blown away in its presentation. I knew I had posted pics in the console screenshot thread and sure enough after some digging...

My quote at the time -

This game is practically biblical in its presentation and beauty. BluePoint are gods. Nothing else looks like this to me. The way the camera zooms in and and out at just the right time riding around, it's way more filmic to me than people give it credit for

These guys were in a league of their own and I will miss their quality output terribly. Probably gonna fire up some old Uncharted or Demon's or SOTC tonight (or all three).

You'll get no argument from me at all about Sony's GAAS push being a disaster. Leadership should have discouraged studios with no live service track record, or who weren't built with live service in mind, from doing anything like that.

They absolutely should have encouraged studios to play to their strengths. Any live service projects from their single-player teams should have been side projects. Not the main thrust of their development time.

There has been such an obvious hole in their offerings thanks to the GAAS gamble. My question is merely if the failed project Bluepoint was on was self-inflicted. All we have is people saying it's "obvious" teams were forced but no evidence and no real explanation why certain teams were spared with no rhyme or reason.

If Bluepoint chose that path, then the guilt Sony has was in not recognizing that was a terrible idea and they shouldn't have incentivized live service so much. But, if I find out that Sony did indeed force studios, that immensely changes my opinion on the matter.

Yeah, I agree. This has just been mismanaged across the board and I'm a bit amazed the powers that be at Sony can't see it. I guess they are blinded by the revenue Sony has raked in from winning the console war. The fact that SIE execs went in front of stock holders and said they were going to make 12 live service games by 2025 was the first sign of the shitstorm that was to come. It's SIE's fault no matter which way I look at it, frankly. They did way too much way too fast. Sony is coasting on Xbox's grave but this is not going to last. Not with the folks currently running the show anyway.

MM hasn't done ANYTHING profitable in DECADES a decent remaster studio was FORCED to try live service so they get shuttered

Making Phil Spencer retaining his employment almost understandable

Nintendo should snatch them up for an eternal darkness remake.

They are just down the street from Retro Studios.

To be extremely charitable, I think BluePoint had ambitions beyond just being a porting/remaster studio. I still think Sony management is batshit for letting them dip their toes back in that water for the first time since Blast Factor with an attempt at a live service game.

You guys (not you, GAF in general) were happier than a pig in shit when that went down
Yes, look, just because something was a horribly shit idea doesn't mean success was guaranteed or owed, in fact the expectation was that these corpos would be scared off GaaS, but apparently fuck us all.

Firstly…

What. The. Fuck!?!

Secondly, fuck Herman & Sony executives.

Thirdly, GOW GaaS was cancelled early last year? And what have they been doing since? Struggling to get any new projects greenlit? Is that a failure of Bluepoint pitching shit projects? Or a failure of Sony denying funding anything that isn't either purple woke shyte or GaaS?

We need the insiders to get in with laid off staffers so we can really understand this.

The studio that made (remade) their best exclusive this generation... all because they couldn't develop a good enough GAAS game. Many this console generation really sucks. Sony leadership demand all these dev companies make GAAS games, then when no one wants them, the devs get axed and the corporate overlords still have jobs.

Yes, I agree. Bluepoint was once the gaming industry's darling when it came to remasters and remakes.
I believe that role has now been taken over by Nixxes, the current favorite when it comes to ports and, possibly, future remaster and remake projects as well.

I don't think Dutch man Hermen would ever shut down Nixxes or Guerrilla, not because they aren't performing well, but because they're Dutch studios that are very near and dear to his heart.

Bluepoint's closure is a big loss, but maybe Sony is planning to acquire Ember Labs, I think they're very fond of the Kena games.
A very small studio that's probably more capable and already gearing up to release their second game (the first Kena was cross-gen).
Do you like Ember Labs/ Kena?

Because I wouldn't be excited for them to get acquired:
